Consistent taste of Big Mac with Chicken and Bacon, egg McMuffin, and hashbrown. The coffee was mild. A few spacious indoor dine-in areas and a few outdoor tables. The DC3 airplane's dine-in area has tables only for 2 persons. Free car park bays just outside the building. Children can climb up to the DC3 with adult supervision.
As far as McDonald's go, they are mostly all the same, food never changes. However this one has a DC3 in the front yard that also doubles as a dining area. For that, it's worthy of 5 stars!
I admit it, we came for the plane. But the plane is totally worth the trip! Where else in the world can you order your Happy Meal, walk past the kiddies’ play area, climb the stairs and eat your burger in a genuine DC10? I thought it would be loud with lots of children, but the plane is more of a draw to the adults. A display of photos with explanatory text just outside the cockpit is really interesting in telling the story of this particular aircraft.
Sure it’s gimmicky, but it’s unforgettable and actually really fun. Do be sure to get there when it is open so you aren’t disappointed. I think when we were there in early May it closed at 4:30.
📍 McDonald's Taupo Lake
Boasts the title of the coolest McDonald's in the world! It indeed looks stunning from the outside and has an antique interior! You can even dine on an airplane!
Only went for plane. Was pretty cool and well setup. There is a front museum but with some information. This could use a little bit of an update as it is currently still just printed paper. However it has a lot of information which is good to see.
Overall this place is great. Had some stunning views over the adjacent lake Taupo. This Macdonalds maintained the standard of the franchise and were very effective in carrying out service. The only negative was the space inside is not suitable for really busy days but the short wait times make up for it. Also the toilet, while serving its purpose practically, are slightly older and don't match the more modern feel of the rest of the restaurant.
Very special McDonalds. What a place to eat and enjoy. No aircon so it got a bit warm but the whole place was fantastic and worth eating. Would go back again and enjoy a fancy McDonalds in a plane. Better than rushing at Auckland airport to grab McDonalds and a Jetstar flight.
Pretty cool!!! It proudly boasts the title of being the coolest McDonald's in the world, and for good reason! The highlight of this restaurant is the decommissioned airliner that sits right inside. It's an incredible experience to dine inside the plane and even catch a glimpse of the cockpit through the glass doors.
However, it's worth noting that the cabin itself may not be the most comfortable place to enjoy a meal on a sunny afternoon. With no windows and no air conditioning, it can get quite hot and crowded with tourists. The waiting time for food orders might be longer due to the high demand. Nevertheless, Taupo McDonald's is an absolute must-visit for capturing memorable photos and experiencing something truly out of the ordinary.
The view is great ⤴︎ ⤴︎ ⤴︎
I was surprised to see a real plane next to the shop‼️
It was very lively and the staff was nice ^_^
It was a fun experience with decent food. The person taking trays from the airplane didn’t bother wiping the tables. Weird.
Nice place, Nice atmosphere and location.
The plane to eat in is obviously a huge plus
The aeroplane is extraordinary, but the dishes is super small. Totally different compare to other outlet… I can eat two sets in once…
Really lovely breakfast, potato hash was so yum!!!! I do prefer my bacon crisper but apart from that top notch. Will definitely be back.

Voted coolest McDonald's in the world, how can it not be a five star when it has a plane that you can eat in?
The said plane does only have one door as entrance and exit, and there is not much air flow. We opt'ed to eat inside the restaurant instead.
Dubbed the world's coolest mcdonald's for their DC-3 plane. Had a meal on the plane, and it was a rather fun experience where there are antique airplane chairs and tables to give a slight feel of what it's like to be in a plane from the days of the past.
Customer service could be better though, as staff members appear to be flustered. Seems like there was a shortage of staff around.
