Came here for dinner on the 4th Jan 2017. A great great restaurant - classy and formal. We were a large group of 11 and they put us indoor on a large round table. Took us a while to get our food but once it arrived it was outstanding! I had the lamb 3 ways and it was Devine. The wait staff were polite throughout the evening a big plus when it's a large group of diners! Top effort I'll be coming back here again!!

Having been someone who has dined at almost every local restaurant in Tga & the Mt. + a few places out of town, I would have to say that this place exceeded expectations from roadside first impressions. I compare my food and taste experience to SidArt in Akld.
Restaurant appearance:- Schuzh up needed.
From the outside, I would never have thought the food was going to be so good. Having looked at real estate apartments above in the past, I would assume that the restaurant styling must stay within the entire complex 'look' so hence the defy of your stock standard flashy restaurant street appeal.
*Lime or bay tree topiary standards would look great planted in the garden on either side of the entrance + an espaliered, well kept green grape (or ornamental) along the entire roadside wall to 1) cover the wall as much as possible and 2) draw in abit of shuzhed up class;-)
Wait service:- Friendly and prompt.
To be fair the use of the term 'fine dining' implies quite a lot of expectations including staff. There is definitely service protocol present however I think the internal decor some-what undoes the true staffing efforts if you cannot focus on one aspect of dining experience at a time.
Price:- Standard restaurant prices with exceptional: food choice, complimentary taste and master chef presentation.
The word fine dining has much become like a CV these days when eating out - over promise but under deliver. The Mt. Bistro was more the reverse - simplistic fine dining offer with exceptional chef execution.
What can you expect:- Well that's up to you.
If you can break down each aspect of your experience by not letting each component taint the food before you've even tasted it, I think you'll be impressed. This is not one of those fancy restaurants where you think 'this is going to be good' because you've based it on how fancy the decor is.... and then the food was a little disappointing. You will not get piles of mash and hot fries on your plate to fill you up but you will get beautifully presented food where flavour depends on your own palette likes and dislikes.
I have eaten here half a dozen times in the last couple of years and the highlights for me were:- quiet environment where you can actually enjoy dinner conversation with accompanying guests. Decor is a little out-dated but the overall feeling is welcoming, comfortable and relaxing. I don't like pages of food selection so expect your usual palette choices on a single page to choose from - this is typical for fine dining. I haven't tried everything (the seafood sword was delicious, the steak was cooked how I like it medium and everything else had a wow factor somewhere present) but I would try food I wouldn't normally eat because it looks that pleasing to the eye.
And I always come away satisfied but never overfull - I eat a full entree, 80% of my main and 80% of dessert to avoid that overfull feeling.
Rating:- This is in my top 3 local dining experiences and top 10 within every other place I've eaten;-)

We purchased a Grab One voucher for this restaurant which was a set menu for our one year wedding anniversary. WOW!! From the moment we arrived the waitresses were excellent. The entrée which was a platter to share included prawns, mussels, pork belly sliders and a tempura mushroom and all of it was excellent. Very tasty. My husband and I both ordered the rib eye steak for the main which were cooked to perfection. For dessert we had a platter to share which included ice-cream, a macaroon, a chocolate chilli tart and something else which I wasn't too keen on. The chocolate chilli tart was really nice but a little too heavy for me at the end of the meal. The other items, I didn't really enjoy. Just not to my palette but I am sure others would enjoy. Overall we had a wonderful evening and I would definitely come back.
Got a grab one voucher for Mt Bistro so was looking forward to going there. We were warmly greeted & shown to our table,we found the staff we dealt with friendly & helpful. The menu for the grab one special was a set menu with a tappers platter for entree,choice of fish chicken or rib eye steak for main & a tappers platter for desert. The food was very good,well presented, beautifully cooked & tasted great! Would have happily had seconds of everything!
This restaurant by far is the best food in the bay, I have eaten at most the top restaurants in this area and Mount Bistro has the best food! Only reason they didn't get a 5 was because the staff were dressed to casual wearing jandles/sandals and it took about 15 mins to get our first drink. Also, the décor inside prob needs an update some time soon
I was very hesitant at going to a more expensive and fancy restaurant because they arn't always what they are cracked up to be.
I'm so glad I went, Mt Bistro was amazing!!! The service was great and you are waited on, they are very professional.
The food was amazing and worth every cent. I had the fish which was the best fish dish I'd ever had.
The atmosphere was perfect and I'd love to go there again.
We dined at this restaurant recently and had the most amazing experience. The staff were lovely and attentive and the food... what can I say... this has to be one of the nicest meals both my husband have even eaten in a restaurant. From our entrees to our drinks, and everything in between, every dish encompassed freshness; the quality and presentation were excellent. Our commendations to Stephen Barry for his unique approach to understanding food and allowing us to experience his deliciously fine menu.
This dinner rounded off a perfect weekend getaway and without hesitation i recommend the Mount Bistro to everyone. I would travel from Sydney to the Mount again, just to experience another meal from his menu.
Amazing food! Some of the best I have had in Tauranga/Mount area, but have now resorted to ordering takeaway style as my friends/ family and myself feel that our last experience there was far below our standards.
The lady of the house, had a bad habit of speaking over me, and making my friend (who is a supervisor and wine steward at Mills Reef) and myself (previuos wine steward and cocktail maker at Millennium Hotel) feel stupid when asking about the wine range they had available. Our waitress was good at taking orders but did not smile the whole time of doing it and did not try to talk to us at all to make us feel welcome or less of being just a paycheck. The best service we had all night was from the head chef as he brought my dads flambeed entree over.
Overall delicious food, but customer service needs a big improvement!
Fine dinning at its best! an a amzing dessert plater to finish off the evening! I could write 1000's of words at how great an expeirence you will have here but it won't do it justice. Great for all special occassions! TRY IT!
Went to dinner as a group of six and this was a real treat for us... usually the budget doesn't stretch to cover dinner on the slightly higher end.... The Mount Bistro was WELL WORTH it!
The food was sublime, the service was faultless and we came away feeling like we'd had a damn good evening.
Thanks to the entire team... we will all be back. :-)
Best meal I have ever had! Everything about it was great. I had the corn fed chicken and my partner had the lamb were both delicious and beautifully presented.
Entree was so good too, definitely the best restaurant I have been to. Staff were very lovely too and the meals came out in very good time. Would definitely go back and recommend to anyone.
Great dining experience. The entree was fabulous and both of our mains were delicious. Our waitress was courteous and efficient. The dessert platter was great with a selection of smaller desserts so you got to have a taste of everything, great to share between two people.
Had the Duck for my main which was the best duck ever!
The service from wait staff was lacking but the chief made up for it with his service!

Eight of us went to the Mount Bistro for a birthday celebration, and we had a wonderful night. The staff were friendly and unpretentious and the food was amazing...........
Everyone at the table said it was the best food they had eaten anywhere.
It is clear that Chef Stephen Barry loves what he does - you can taste it in his food.

This was the best dining experience I have had in ages! Our family shared four dishes, which is how the Thai eat. We were so full! The food is extravagant, beautifully prepared and tastes like heaven. The service was really good to! We were told to stay as long as we liked and were attended to regualry. The price was reasonable to and this is now my new fav restaurant in nz
Dinner yesterday was faultless, Dutch Waitress very, very friendly, chef and Aides were friendly, approachable and very professional. Presentation and quality as good a I have experienced anywhere in the World. Fish Chowder better than San Francisco (hard to admit, but true). No problem with timing, as should be expected for everything that is fresh cooked. I can only guess that Chris (he of the 2 star rating) was more used to fast food (or is a jealous competitor). Can't wait for my next trip back from UK, this will be our celebration dinner evening!! Highly recommend by all 5 of us who appreciate good food.
We had a great experience at Mount Bistro...great service, lovely wine and our meals were divine!!! A bit on the expensive side but worth it especially for special occasions....worth a try without a doubt!!
Quite simply the best food I have found since the Sebel went away from fine dining. Classic case of NZ's fine dining being incredible value compared to the rest of the world while our middle-of-the-road dining is outrageously expensive for what it is. Skip two outings to regular places in Tauranga, go to Mt Bistro and pocket the difference.
Fantastic restaurant. Been a few times and always amazing. The Sword and Saucery is amazing and staff create a great atmosphere. We have been as a couple and also as a reasonably large group and each time the service is 100%.
Fifteen of us dined at the Mount Bistro on April 29th. It was a special occasion and I wanted everything to be perfect. And it was!!! I can't thank Stephen and his friendly staff enough. The food, the menu and the service were superb.. equal to anything we have experienced before.. and we have eaten in top restaurants around the world. I can't praise this restaurant enough. Absolutely top-class!! We can't wait to return!
Mount Bistro was one of the best dining experiences I have had in recent times.
The seafood chowder was the real deal and the duck medley was magnificent.
Combine the great food, the delightful waitresses and the immaculate table setting and one has all the ingredients for a fine dining experience.
Mount Bistro comes with my highest recommendation.

Dined on 4 March - the food was outstanding and the service was exceptional. The downside is that by the counter someone was there for over 2 hours folding towels and doing jobs that should have been behind the scenes - real shame as we were paying top price for the night.
Went here in January 2011 for our daughters birthday, we had a wonderful evening. This is the fourth time we have been and as normal the service, food and wine were excellent. They even surprised us with a small cake and sparkler candle for our daughter.
We will certainly be eating there again soon.

I have been looking forward to dining at the Mount Bistro for sometime and was not disappointed. The food was some of the best I have ever eaten, the service was great and the menu inspired. I am vegetarian and often eating out is a bit of a non event for me but the dish was superb. My husband loved the "Twisted Tale" - good luck for the competition! Well done. Highly recommended.
Where do I start, first I will say if you dine here prepare for an experience, not just a meal out.
Felt like I had died and gone to culinary heaven. The atmosphere was calm and unhurried but efficient, plenty of time between courses for discussion commentary and anticipation, and we were not to be disappointed. Without a doubt the finest restaurant I have ever dined in. Beautifully presented, generous sized meals and a marriage of flavours that was divine! Thankyou to all at Mount Bistro, you Rock!

I visited during the Monteiths Wild Food Festival and the dinner was superb. We especially enjoyed the Montini's and appreciated the time Stephen took to come out and speak with us about each course. I highly recommend the Mount Bistro and look forward to coming back for my birthday.

Birthday dinner on a Wednesday and the birthday girl liked it as did we all. Interesting menu with good sized portions for Starters and Mains. Piggies that we were we also had Dessert too. All went away very satisfied with the meal and service. Expect $$$$ though. Recommend.
A small and very intimate restaurant. The menu was compact but with a good choice of different meals. The food was well presented and tasted very good. The wine was also good. Prices about New Zealand average. Booking recommended as seating is fairly limited although there is a bar area where you can wait. Friendly staff.
My wife and I went here for our anniversary and we were not disappointed at all. The wait staff were great - very friendly and professional. The owner greeted us, and he was great. The atmosphere of this place is really romantic and the view from the front looks out to The Mount. The food was absolutely superb.
We had the takeaway tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Tasting platter, Seafood chowder, Eye fillet, Chicken breast and Mushroom risotto - all beautifully cooked and very generous portions - enough left over for lunch tomorrow. Well done the Mount Bistro team - we'll be back.

Delicious and well crafted meal, especially the 'Sword and Saucery' specialty dish, (seafood flamed on a skewer), and the dessert platter. Great service too from the Irish brothers who were our wait staff, attentive and genuinely hospitable. A very pleasant evening all round.
Wonderful restaurant. Loved our meals and service was fantastic. Especially recommend the eye fillet and rib. Most of the menu is GF as well so great for those with Gluten allergies. Would definitely go again

Went to Mount Bistro on.the weekend for a surprise 60th, have to say SO IMPRESSED, the staff, venue, the food, the service for nearly 40 people, awesome, could not fault anything or anyone. Speaking to family and friends the next day all were like minded. Hats off to this venue, well worth a visiting. Big thank you to all the staff for making our family celebration so memorable.
Recently a group of family and friends had a yummmmy meal there. Highlights included the Sword and surf - prawns, salmon, and fish flambed at the table and oh so tasty. Others in the group had the amazing signature beef dish which they raved about. The desserts were also spectacular. Highly recommend a visit for a special occasion
Last night I celebrated my birthday here with my family, we have lived at the Mount for 16 years but never had the pleasure of this restaurant - no idea why! This was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had, the food was absolutely superb, the service was amazingly attentive, the staff were fabulous, the owner/head chef came to our table and personally presented me with my dish which was a speciality of theirs, I presume I got this treatment due to my birthday. All of us had the best time we were there for 3 and a half hours. The chicken dishes were to die for, the three way beef was to die for and I had their signature dish Sword 'n' Sauce-ry which is flambeed in front of you was also to die for. Even the bread and dips were beautiful. Highly recommend this restaurant a dining experience you will remember. Well done Mount Bistro!
