Very ordinary exterior does not reflect the great food served here. Staff are very friendly and everything we had was delicious and homemade.
If I had one tiny criticism it's that the vegetarian option (bean burrito) was a tad too expensive at $25 - around $20 would've been more representative.
Having said that we'd definitely go back!
Great staff atmosphere and food a good place to stop
The food was fantastic and so was the service what a lovely place can't fault it . Just go
Always a fantastic meal and the service is wonderful!
Good coffee good food good service, recommended along with Twizel itself to anyone visiting the Upper Waitaki.
We went for tea with our 2 children and we loved the food and the service was amazing best we have had in a long time will go back
Amazing, great food and ambience would come back again
Perfect. Lives up to its motto. Absolutely excellent food
Great food great hot chocolate always pop in when up in Twizel

Had dinner here during our stay at Twizel!
The food here was really good! We loved the way the salmon was cooked. Perfectly cooked!! They had a pickle/vegemite-ish veg that went so well with the hummus and salmon!
The Saffron Risotto was our favourite! It was a simple dish, but the risotto was cooked just right, and the saffron taste came out perfectly as they weren’t overpowered by the other spices.
We ordered their leek and potato soup as well! It was really thick, not too creamy. Really felt homely :”)
This place is a gem in Twizel. A MUST GO!
Visited Poppies last night with a group of friends. The food was delicious especially the soup, local salmon and home made ravioli. The price was good too but the best part was the warm welcome and helpful service and advice from the staff. One even got her car and drove me to the place I was looking for. Fantastic service. Thanks again
Went out for a meal, was fantastic. Great atmosphere tasty food. Amazing presentation and something new. A twist on apple tart. Covered in white chocolate with creamy centre and apple purée inside sitting on tart. Almost to pretty to eat but oh soooooo good
The venison was incredible and the lamb was even better. Highly recommend.
Dropped in during a road trip. Good menu selection. Ordered the Poppies Burger, which was an excellent range of tastes, and it came with a good pile of fries. Good quick service, the coffee was also nice, and I hit the road again feeling like I'd made a good choice.
Highly recommended this place… such nice dinner we have. Lovely service.
Second night here really lively and busy which shows how popular it is both nights the food was excellent. Nice choice of beer and wine. As food is cooked from fresh don’t expect food being quick but that is how it should be. One big moan is wifi you get a voucher and it lasted 7 minutes before it was used up and then I presume you pay if you want to.
We ordered the steak with veggies and one of the local beers (Speitz - spelling?) and everything was delicious. Highly recommend. Cost was 200 New Zealand for 4 persons and 4 drinks.
Great dining option in Twizel after lots of high country exploration. I enjoyed my very fresh locally farmed salmon (though doing it over would ask for the sauce on the side if trying to be healthy). Husbands lamb curry was even better. Friendly services makes you feel at home.
Thoroughly enjoyed our late lunch at Poppies in Twizel! The service & staff were delightful. Food was beautifully presented & very tasty. Perfect summer lunch!
My biggest regret of our two weeks in NZ is not eating at this restaurant both nights we were in Twizel! Seriously, there's nothing wrong with eating at the same place consecutive nights when there are so few options in town, the price point is pretty similar, and one option is clearly the best. We made a reservation for 6:30pm on a Wednesday evening in August. The place filled up while we were there, but I think it would have been possible to get a table without a reservation, since it was low season. My husband and I ordered the fish special and salmon salad, with cheesecake to end. Everything was incredible, and I'm saying this from a slightly-snobby-foodie and annoying-health-nut point of view. Both dishes came with sides, and both were very high quality and creatively made. The salmon was the freshest I've ever tasted, and the bed of veggies it came on was to die for. Service was attentive, friendly, and on point. The atmosphere was relaxing and warm, and the facilities were clean. I cant recommend this place enough!!
Located off the highway in the little town of Twizel.
Was an excellent meal
The lamb curry was cooked perfectly, was surprising to find such nice pappadam and tasty curry.
The meat was soft and succulent. It melts in your mouth
The salmon was really good. Your fork pokes through and through. Yet its so crispy!
Lovely combination with the veges.
The fries were beyond this world. Its so soft inside yet crispy outside and it is nicely salted.
Strongly recommend this place for a meal. (Maybe even 2!)
One of the most popular restaurant in Twizel single restaurant options here are quite limited. Ordered fillet steak, pork belly, pasta and bean burrito. Steak was okay but pork belly was a little hard to chew and even cut. Pasta and bean burrito were good. Sticky date pudding was nice as well! Service was good and prompt albeit the huge volume of customers at night.
Very welcoming and one of the best food I had in NZ in 2 years. Thank you again. I recomand the poppies special dessert.
Why is no one talking about the venison pie??
So returned to Poppies after my last visit four years ago with my partner and we still love it. It's a quirky but simple café that serves great food..pretty sure my salad came out of their garden that morning. Staff were friendly, quick and efficient. As mentioned I had the venison pie it was wonderful and definitely exceeded my expectations. We'll be back next time we need to escape our busy lives in Queenstown.
Very decent fare in a town without a traffic signal. Expect more than a ham sandwich and you will be pleasantly delighted. Good food. Good beer. Come for starters and dessert, or delve into the mains.
Easy to find parking, good food, friendly staff, very clean toilets. Good place to chill and relax over breakfast. Pancakes come with toasted banana which were delicious! Peppermint water was a nice touch too. Roasted mushrooms (that came with the breakfast platter) were delicious too!
