Very friendly and accommodating staff, food just the right portion (not feeling too full, not left feeling like there wasn't enough). Absolutely breathtaking view and a great escape for a romantic meal or even to bring kids along. Will definitely revisit if the opportunity presents itself.
Grade A!!!
We loved the food and service was excellent. Table for 4 (2 adults and 2 children) Reasonable prices and great atmosphere. Not sure why the bad reviews we thoroughly enjoyed it.
Highly recommend Lamb Two Ways and NZ Angus Tenderloin! The meats were well cooked and tasted awesome! The dessert were amazing as well. Homemade Baked Cheesecake was epic, which was the best and a must-have! Vanila Cream Brulee with Biscotti was delicious too. Overall, it was a lovely experience dining here! Wonderful food, great service and beautiful sea view just outside the restaurant.
this is one of the best plac i have ever been, especially the food, OMG sooooooo yum.
Popped in for lunch and dinner while staying here. Staff are kind and patient while we made mistakes and wondered where to sit. Daily quiet while here. Food was of good quality and the servings were enough if not plentiful. Had vegetarian options. Chocolate mousse was fantastic.
The restaurant has a really good view, I think it's good for family gathering
Castaways, located near land’s end deep past Waiuku. Decided to pop in here (using an entertainment voucher) during a house-sit in Waiuku and the food was amazing.
The salmon was very well done, lightly cooked so it wasn’t dry all. The lamb shank was incredibly deliciously seasoned and cooked the perfection. The pecan dessert was quite unique, made into a meatball style.
The food was really high quality and the service even better. A side of potatoes was a good choice as the mains were mostly just the meat with very little vegetables. Starter chowder was fresh, hot and delicious. Slightly overpriced but appropriate for the location and quality. Would recommend using an Entertainment Voucher to make it an all round perfect evening.

It has an excellent view of the sea and sunset over the ocean.
You can sit inside or outside have drinks.
Price isn't costly like most of us would expect due to its locations.
Toilets are clean; staff are friendly and overall we always have a good experience.
We were driving from Auckland to Rotorua and wanted to visit a black sand beach. We detoured to Karioitahi Beach and spent an hour on that magnificent beach. Afterwards, we were famished and drove up the hill to Castaways Resort.
Lunch in the restaurant was just what we needed. The waitress was very attentive. The chef fixed a special pizza for the girls and a to order burger for our daughter.
My wife even commented that the decor in the restroom coordinated with the outdoors.
The restaurant also has a great view of that magical beach.
Gary Hyde is the General Manager of the Castaways Resort and was a great help with our visit. He even dropped in during our lunch to greet us.
We’ll be back on our next trip to New Zealand.
We stayed in the studio room which was cute with a nice view from the balcony. Noise from the rooms either side was present but minimal, however there was a lot of motorbike noise from the beach, even after it had gone dark. The room was mostly clean, with a few corners on the floor in the room and bathroom still quite dusty and are obviously missed during cleaning. We also never had the room serviced so ran out of TP on the second day, despite the compendium saying it would be serviced daily. The restaurant staff were lovely, friendly, and accommodating for me as a vegan, but options were pretty limited. We purchased the stone bath experience which was nice, but I wouldn't recommend it during winter, as it was dark by the time we had been booked for, so we didn't get the beautiful sunset view like in the pictures. Also, there are four baths within a few meters of each other, no changing rooms with doors, and no toilets - a bit of an odd setup if you are booked at the same time as other people. Overall it was a nice experience, and a relaxing place to be. I would probably book one of the larger, standalone accommodation options if I was to come again.
First time away for us since having our kids. Resturant was lovely & warm on a cold winters day. Drinks were served promptly, as was our entree and dinner. Food was yummy. Stuff were very friendly. We will defiantly be back.
I came here with work for a few days. We had a retreat where we did a lot of work. The location and views are absolutely amazing. It's nice to feel like you're so far away from everything, but actually be just a short drive from Auckland. Rooms are nice and large and beds are comfy. Would definitely come back here, possibly even for a personal trip.
We stayed because we had a function to go to.
We had a two bedroom chalet for the night.
It was lovely and spacious with a nice large lounge area with joined kitchen and dining area off the that is a small laundry. The rooms had a king bed in each and both rooms had ensuite bathrooms.
Some areas were abit dusty under bed and around behind drawers. Otherwise clean everywhere else.
A small deck for viewing was great.
We stayed one night which wasnt long enough it would have been great to stay longer. The cost per night in a room like ours was $269.
We would definitely like to stay again.
Lovely place overlooking the ocean.
We had dinner in the functions room which was very nice and cooked to perfection and breakfast buffet in the restaurant which the area was abit small with allot of other people dining also but the food was very delicious.
Service was great at both the functions centre and the restaurant.
Hats off to the chefs for their great cooking.
Thank you castaways resort.
