Excellent customer service, top of the line Indian food.
Each curry had different taste and aroma, value for money.
Will recommend every Wellington visitor to at least dine in once, owner was in his toes and looked after every customer personally and made sure all things were right.
Veg n non veg both options are must to try.
Cheese garlic nan, onion Kulcha, paneer kadhai and chicken jalfrezi.

Excellent restaurant. Great all round experience. 10 out of 10 times I go there I receive excellent service. I really appreciate that about the restaurant, when the service is consistently at a high standard. The staff are well trained and courteous, creating a very good first impression the moment you walk in. Food is excellent. Highly recommend the veal on the Maharaja section of the menu. The spices and flavors are very nicely blended together and create a unique flavor explosion on your tastebuds! Every time I've been there the rotis are also grilled to a very high standard. Never over burnt, overcooked. Love the saffron rice! The mango lassi really goes with the meal as well. Clearly a restaurant that takes pride in its food and sets very high standards. Highly recommended

Very impressed with this place! Came here tonight with my partner and was seated right away. The staff took extra care with creating a great customer experience. Curry it's self was a little watery, but the naan bread was fabulous. Honestly the best customer service I have ever experienced in a resturant in a long time. I would definitely return.

Relaxed and friendly feel to the place, but perhaps too relaxed in terms of service. As a Brit I've eaten a few curries in my time - and I thought to myself 'is this a korma I'm eating'? Then I argued with myself a little because who cares? It was tasty. The nann bread was good and the chicken tikka starter was lush. I haven't given this a 4 because theres actually a nicer little curry place round the corner which I would! That saying, Great India is good for a relaxed meal with friends.

This place has a very calming ambiance. Very good hospitality. We ordered tandoori chicken which was very tender and delicious.
Karahi paneer was brought in a small karahi and a little candle under it. Looked very cute and tasted very well. The garlic naan was really soft and one was enough for one person.
They give hot towel to wipe hands, that was refreshing. They have a fancy water bottle which is actually a Bombay Saphire gin bottle. At the end
Our bill didn't have the tandoori chicken included so we asked them to add. But they gave it on the house. So generous of them. Very polite and friendly staff. Would recommend Great India for food.

The food is absolutely delicious and such a great deal for what you get. I had the bhuna josh curry with pullau rice and garlic naan, everything was so good and there were some amazing flavours that I could have eaten everything by itself and I would've been happy.
The staff were so friendly and I had a great experience there. I would definitely recommend this place!

Came here with a big group of 10, including 2 vegans (myself and my partner) and this restaurant were amazing and full of advice and help about everything on the menu. So many options for our diet which I think is an important thing to have.
We ended up getting a selection of bread and rice for the table and each had our own curry (we got Vegetable Dumpling curry). All food came out at the same time which is always good!
The service was amazing and next to perfection. All staff working were very polite.
I'm here in Wellington on holiday and the last couple days I've been amazing when it comes to food and service! Absolutely stunning compared to Auckland

Went to The Great India tonight for my sister's birthday and the service is 5 star!! We ordered Naan and rice for a table of 6 and couldn't even finish it despite 3 big eating boys!! The variety of naans was delicious and the curries were so flavoursome! When we were accidentally brought the wrong curries the waiter was most apologetic and had the correct ones brought out within 2 mins. They also let us keep the wrong ones to enjoy so we had 2 extra curries for the table. Our waters were always full, hot towels at the end for our hands and doggy bags full of food to take home! They also let us use two entertainment cards for the one table which is a rare occurrence! To the team at great India - thank you for your amazing, professional and friendly service. You are a cut above the rest and its those little gestures that will ensure we come back!!

Amazing how places you pass everyday can be taken for granted but then once you enter into their atmosphere enjoy the company of others with fantastic food and steadfast service can really make an evening special.

For appetizer a group of five of us had poppadoms with four assorted chutneys which ranged from super sweet to super spicy. Then to continue the feast, selected Onion Bhaji with coleslaw, Chicken Korma with a selection of naans that ranged from a honey and peanut specialty, garlic, plain and a few other breads.

I thoroughly enjoyed this experience with the waiters being very polite and accommodating and an owner who was present to ask us how our meals were going. All topped off with steaming hot towels and a full stomach. Will definitely return one day.

Hands down the best Indian food I've had. The wait staff is fantastic, and they can go through the menu items clearly if needed. The entrees alone would have done it for us - we had the mixed entree platter, and didn't realise the portions would be so big, and everything so full of distinct and intense flavour that we ate it all at the risk of not having space for mains. We still had the mains - curries from the Chef's Specialty section, and they were mind blowingly delicious.

To state the obvious, I highly recommend this place, and I shall be back (multiple times...)

Man I like a good curry, but I find it very hard to find one. Maybe it's my British taste having not grown up with the New Zealand style of curry, but whatever it is I do struggle.

During a conversation at work about this subject, a couple of people mentioned Great India as a very good place.

Today I tried it at lunchtime with a colleague who is Vegan.

They were busy but we were seen to and served in good time. They were very polite and when my colleague mentioned he was Vegan they were able to provide and cater to his needs. Our meals also came out quickly.

They were very good. My colleague was blown away.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Chicken Madras. Nice amount of succulent chicken. Fresh, warm soft garlic naan. Not as garlicy as I would have preferred but it was good.

I also ordered an Emersons Bookbinder.

All up it cost me $25 (The beer was $13)

Fantastic service, lovely, fresh, flavoursome food at a good price.

I will be back very soon.

I have tried a few Indian restaurants but the butter Chicken and prawn dish prepared here was absolutely delicious that I must rate this restaurant to have the best Indian meal in town. The service is great, food prices are a bit expensive especially the seafood meals, but the price is worth the meal that you will pay for. Located in manners st, it is in the heart of the CBD. The environment is also quite cosy and relaxing. Will definitely be visiting again.

We went for dinner on Saturday 11 June 2016. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel very special with the Maitre d welcoming us with a handshake and showing us to our seats. The waiting staff were very friendly and attentive and asked us at the beginning if we were under any time pressure. The restaurant ambiance was great, the food was fantastic and probably one of the best curries I have had in a long time. I would have no hesitation recommending Great India and I personally can't wait to eat there again

$12 lunch represent extremely good value. Tasty food and good service. They take your coat and give you warm face towels after your meal, so it feels like a high-class experience with the high cost. I also like how you don't have to pay extra for a garlic naan!
Pro-tip: ask for a heat level one level lower than you would at other Indian restaurants in Wellington. hot = HOT here.

I came here for the lunch menu - $12 for curry, rice and naan. Quite a good portion size for a lunch menu, I was so full I couldn't touch the rice! The best thing about the lunch menu is the variety of the lunch options, not only for the curry itself but also the rice and naan. Also, good meat to curry ratio! Naan was delicious and soft and the sweet lassi I had on the side was pretty good too. Not sure why the water glasses are so tiny though!

It's quite unique in that it is possibly the only Indian restaurant with such a "high-class" atmosphere with crisp white napkins. As such, the service is outstanding and the food superb

While visiting Wellington me and friend decided to try Great India as he absolutely loves Indian food. Upon entering we both thought the restaurant had a nice atmosphere and from our previous experiences in Wellington we were looking for a real experience. We were seated straight away which was nice, the waiter asked us a question but we were unable to understand the waiter, upon asking him to repeat we were asked if we were in a hurry to leave... Not something I particularly want to hear just as I am seated. During the dinner we also had some rather interesting experiences which included,  suggested wine which was not suited for our meals, hot flannels handed to us with metal tongs.Although the customer service was strange at times the food was faultless... Next time I will get the food takeaway instead of dining in. I was surprised to see a newspaper article on the wall regarding best customer service but seeing it was from 2005 made me understand better. If the service was better I would definitely want to dine in again.

Should the fancy for a curry take you on a Monday (when taste of India is closed) then this is the place to come.

I only ever had a takeaway from this place but on first glance the decor is warm and inviting, the fish tanks are a great addition and the staff were really friendly. Had a great little chat with him.

The curry and starters were outstanding, the mint yoghurt with poppadoms were probably my favourite part of the meal. Excellent selection on the menu and is one of the areas where it has taste of India beat

Went here for a work lunch a while back and was thoroughly impressed. One of the best curries I've had, though I tend to keep it pretty basic in terms of spice as I am woeful at handling it.

Everyone ordered a range of curries and there was a resounding sound of approval of how authentic, tasty and great the portion sizes wore. They catered to the group amazingly, supplying an array of rices and nan breads to share, with an entree of different sauces and tasty popadoms. High praises for the mango chutney and coconut rice - both of which are worth going here simply to try all though only side dishes.

My lamb Korma was smooth and tasty, combined with everything it went down a treat.

Check the photos out they explain everything. Thanks guys!

Went on Thursday, 18 June 2015. Favourite Indian restaurant in New Zealand. Cannot fault the quality on the food. An absolute joy to taste an Indian meal that does not feel it has come from some processed production line. Three of us dined. Papadoms and a selection of chutneys to start. Delicious! A chicken madras, a chicken jalfezie and a pork vindaloo were ordered, along with a plain and garlic naan. Stunning meals. The pork was especially memorable and combined brilliantly with the sourness of the vindaloo sauce. You can see why they won best restaurant in Wellington a few years ago. Highly recommended.

Absolutely superb service and delicious food. First experience was just to get some takeout, but was offered a seat while I waited for it to be freshly cooked, and was even offered lemon water! Had to come back with friends for a BYO, which had decently priced corkage (from what I remember?) and a wide variety of options for dishes — ranging in price, but more on the moderate end. Definitely a spot to check out (as an occasional treat for students like myself) if you love good Indian food!

I went here for the first time today. I had the $12 lunch special consisting of curry, rice and bread (I went with the Garlic Naan).

Overall a really good experience. The staff were very polite and friendly, service was swift. There was a minor mixup with my order but staff addressed it very prompty, courteously and professionally.

The Garlic Naan was good (not the best ive had in wellington but still very good). The curry was excellent.

The rice was very interesting. In most places the curry is good whereas the rice is a bland chore that one must endure to offset the enjoyment of the curry.
However, the spiced rice at Great India was a wonderful exception to this. The rice itself was delicious. Really impressed.

Portions weren't as big as one normally gets with a curry meal, but for $12, really great value.

I strongly recommend Great India.

Additional: Its been five months since I posted this review. Since then, I have been back to Great India almost every weekend. Consistently excellent food and excellent service. Its become my favourite eating venue in Wellington. Strongly recommend.

Great India in one of our weekend family lunch spots, Miss11 never objects to a meal here.
The lunch meal is from the special lunch menu and you choose a main, a type of rice and a variety of naan bread. Unlike other Indian restaurants it is all served on your plate in individual portions. I like this as it means I get more than two spoonfuls of rice before the others dish it all up.
The food is good, it is the kind of Indian taste that you find yourself craving and only this place will do.
It wouldn't be somewhere I would go to in the evenings but I certainly enjoy lunch and leave feeling like I have had a meal.

We went to this restaurant at the recommendation of some friends and it was heartening to discover that those recommendations were not empty promises. The Great India restaurant could not be better named. The little things make the difference. The sophisticated non-Indian music provided a non-kitsch backdrop for an unobtrusive front of house to do their work and a gave us a very pleasurable dining experience. The food was simply the tastiest Indian food we have ever tasted. Vindaloo and Butter Chicken to die for in realistic meal-size quantities. Perfect. Alas I don't think they would deliver to Christchurch. I will ask them today .

The only Indian restaurant you'll ever need. I've been going for 10 years. In my opinion it is head and shoulders above anything else. Always consistent. There are too many highlights to mention - but I'll settle for quality. Top quality, I've never found anywhere else that serves such well cut chicken. Keep it up. Hands down the best restaurant in Wellington! My partner and I both work in hospitality and so can be rather critical when eating out but we were both blown away with the exceptional service, flawless food and fantastic atmosphere. We were in passing of Great India at 9pm on a Sunday night and were shocked to find they would happily seat us for dinner. The gentleman who greeted us (the owners son) was the perfect host, not only catering to us with 5* service but reassuring us throughout the evening to take our time and offering us more courses as the night proceeded. We did not plan on eating in the restaurant, just happened to stumble across on our way home. We both have found our new favourite hesitant and can not wait to return with our family and friends. Thank you Great India for an unforgettable experience and superb hospitality. Your floor and kitchen staff are professional and exceeded all expectations. Definitely set a high bar in Wellington not just for Indian resultants but for all bars and restaurants. Thanks again, we will be back.

What sets this Indian restaurant apart is the service! The service is just impeccable they go over and above to make sure you are attended too and the hand towels at the end are a lovely touch.

The food is really delicious too especially the coconut rice. The restaurant offers a great place to catch up for lunch or a lovely place for a romantic meal in the evening. It is a little more expensive in the evenings than the others in the region but I think it is worth it if you are looking for something a little more special.

Great India is in my opinion one of the two best Indian restaurants in Wellington (the other being Indus on Tinakori Road).
This longstanding and award winning restaurant is perhaps best known for its particularly good service and attentive Maitre D’ Rakesh. However, with a strong ‘flavour’ of the English Midlands, they also have a extensive menu with a great range of starters and main courses; my particular favourites are the Seekh Kebab, Chicken Tikka, Chicken Jalferzi and the Murgh Biryani although there are plenty of other dishes for the more adventurous (including squid and venison) as well as vegetarians; they also have a particularly good range of Indian beers and their Bombay Gins are to die for. Equally suitable for singles, couples and business dinners, their large round tables are also great for group nights out.
Is it expensive? No but as ever it depends on what exactly you’re comparing it with and whether you object to paying for rice; it’s probably the lowest cost restaurant that I go to and their $10 lunch must be the best value offering in the city.
The refurbished bathrooms are also a great improvement.

It was a Friday night and we decided to have a late night curry after watching the Phoenix disappointingly draw their home game at the cake-tin, we selected the Great India as our destination for dinner as we knew they'd welcome some new customers at 9:45pm. After the obligatory question they ask every time of whether we wanted their overpriced pompadoms and dips, we selected two entrees -- Seekh Kebab and Chicken Tikka. The kebab was a small serving in my opinion. The mint yoghurt that accompanied them that was made with dried mint rather than fresh. We had a couple of Kingfisher Strongs, again charged the highest price in town at $15 a bottle. For the main course we had Chicken Jalfrezi, Methi Gosht (lamb pieces cooked with fenugreek leaves), Gehtu Masala (lamb in a tandoori masala sauce) and Murgh Chuttri (chicken cooked with capsicum and mushrooms). All were bahut acha (very good). The Jalfrezi was the hottest and the heat was just right. The Gehtu Masala was another great find -- the lamb was tender and the sauce exquisite. I appreciated that all the sauces were distinctly different, when sometimes it seems like the restaurants around town are using the same sauce base across a range of dishes. The breads were good, and we even went crazy and spent the $7.50 for a Pershwari Naan - which is a large sized serving that justifies the equally large price tag. The plain steamed rice, at $3.50 per serve, is a joke. We got one bowl and shared it around the four of us. We were very satisfied at the end of the meal, having ordered just the right amount of food, with no leftovers. As a bonus we used the Entertainment Card and got a $25 discount off the meal. The environment was good. We had the place to ourselves for the last half of the meal, but didn’t feel rushed. While we completed our meal the two cooks left, so we passed on our gratitude to them for the tasty late night dinner they had prepared for us. The maitre d' was a good chap too, but he wasn’t the usual one (Rakesh) that runs the show. Marking their rating down was the inevitable additional costs that they try to incorporate in the bill, such as rice at $3.50 a bowl and the expensive pompadum+dips question that still haunts me from when I was financially burnt the last time I was naive enough to have them.

This is one restaurant that does not compromise on taste. It is the closest to the true taste of Indian food that I have found so far in Wellington. Excellent quantity of servings and the atmosphere is great. Service is generally prompt and always cordial. A great place to eat.

A good all-round meal. Lovely food with great service. Quite costly for an Indian restaurant (having to pay $3.50 for each serving of rice, which doesn't come with the meal), so the 25% discount that the Entertainment Book offers is appreciated.

Ok, I don't change my mind about Indian restaurants usually. Because this is the food that I grew up with. So very picky. But this one I did. When I went here the first time in July, I thought this was one of those Indian joints for white people. Posh. Tad expensive. Flavors toned down. Wasn't too kicked. Staff was great though! But the second time no other restaurant was open on Diwali so went in anyways. Ordered up food: Dalmakhni, Naan, Veg paneer curry. And boy was outstanding. This time had flavours to mild and it was still punching. Still tasted like food back home. My friend who is a kiwi was in love too! Didn't think could beat two sets of audience with same food. They did :)

Very welcoming and amazing service from the team at Great India. The food was well portioned and cooked fresh. A hot towel at the end of the meal is the icing on the cake for me! Will definitely be coming back!

This is some of the best Indian food I have eaten. The flavours of almost every dish we tried were complex and layered, and the serving sizes are excellent for the price. The pakoras are the best I've had outside of an actual Indian kitchen, and the Dal soup was incredible. The service is also fantastic, with a really nice mix of friendly and formal. A wonderful dining experience.

Went twice in two weeks as was in Wellington both weeks for business. First night was two of us. Food was awesome and fairly priced. Second week was a group of six. They tailored our meals for a group from entrees to mains and it was perfect. So much food for the price. And all of it was tasty. No complaints. Highly recommended.

Searched for Goan food on Google and this place came up, decided the reviews were good so would try it out when we visited Wellington. A shame that if only three people you can't reserve a table in advance but understandable. The waiter suggested an earlier rather than later time for dinning. We arrived just in time, the table was ready and we were given plenty of time to chose our meals. The food here is awesome to say the least, the menu gives you plenty to chose from and there will be something to suit most tastes. The dishes were rich and full of flavor. The staff were very pleasant and didn't hassle you, the restaurant was busy which made the advice of getting in earlier a wise one, would definitely want to eat here again.

Was a lovely meal and great service. Unfortunately a short lady left with my black woollen coat accidentally. I believe her and her partner were heading to the Credence Clearwater Collective show. The restaurant has my contact details if you would kindly return it. I left yours with them. Thank you🙏

First time here - Tonight’s Lamb Madras ticked all boxes! The sauce was flavoursome and the perfect authentic consistency, the lamb was tender and fall apart soft. the parantha and naans were delicious. The service was amazing, all the waiters and the manager were just fantastic. They really care about customer service here. The warm cloth at the end was such a nice unique touch!

Indian curry that’s a little bit fancy, with service to match. Curries were tasty, packed full of flavour, not greasy and won’t make you regret it the next day! We came for dinner on a Saturday night, no booking, and found a spot easily. The waiters were very attentive, the prices were very reasonable.

Without a doubt one of, if not "the" best restaurants in wellington. fantastic food, exemplary service. truly a must visit if you are in wellington. The butter chicken is especially popular. For those that want to live on the wild side there are some "off-Menu" items that get way, way spicier than a super-hot vindaloo.
