The rice for the nasi lemak was too moist and sticky. The curry kapitan and nyonya is good. Overall good food. Can consider coming back. Lobak is delicious though looks a bit burnt. Slightly over-rated at 4.8. But still definitely 4 and above stars.

This place is usually busy but we were lucky to get a table straightaway. The staff was kindly explaining to us when we have query about the food. The food was in huge serving. I got the Hokkien char and they were giving really generous amount of prawns and chicken. Food was really full of flavours 👍🏻

This place is really busy but it still worth the wait.

Only waited for 5 min before we get a seat.

Love the food and they have set menu which i find this wonderful. I cant remember where in Auckland I could find set menu option in Malaysian cuisine.

Having this in Wellington is definitely something new for me.

Plenty of seats. Efficient staff and delicious food.

A cozy place to eat on a rainy Friday night. At first glance the place looks small and packed but we were seated quickly. Despite the chaoticness of the end of the week, bad weather and mass amount of people waiting, the staff never failed to provide such friendly service with patience.

The food came out promptly, fresh and hot.
The Nasi Lemak can be ordered as a "Quick Meal Combo" that came with your choice of a side. We chose the Mango Salad for one set and the Vegetable Fritter for the other (I think the Vegetable Fritter might not be available as an option for a side now but hopefully it will be again).

The Nasi Lemak served here is distinctive and not like what you'd normally see at other Malaysian restaurants. Usually to be half a hard boiled egg instead a piece of fried egg is served. The Sambal sauce here looked and tasted more like some sort of chutney (though I could be wrong). The rice was a bit too rich for my liking and contained too much obvious solidified coconut cream chunks in it.
The sides of Mango Salad and Vegetable Fritter was absolutely delicious! And rarely seen on Malaysian restraurant menus. The salad was light and fresh and the vegetable fritter was crunchy and crispy without being oily. The Curry Puffs and Teh Tarik is always a good companion to go with any mains. The Teh Tarik came out hot, just what was needed on a wet night and smooth and creamy without being too sweet.

Overall, Little Penang was a fantastic experience to try a different version of Nasi Lemak. The restaurant is a comfy place that really makes you feel at home.

Little Penang is a great spot for some cheap and cheery Malay food. The teh tarik is amazing, highly recommend getting a mug of that with your meal. The Nyonya starter platter is a great way to try a few different entrees. You cant go wrong with any of the mains really. I've tried their curry and roti, the otak-otak, char kway teow and nasi goreng and it's all good, so I think its safe to say they're probably all good! Just look out for the spice level. I always ask for mild because I cant handle spice, but I've had friends who have ordered medium spice and its hotter than they were expecting.

Best Malaysian in Wellington by far. I'm from Auckland and come down here a few times a year. Second time I've visited this place and I'm not dissapointed at all.

Good price, good quality, friendly service.

I had the char kuay teow. I usually go for hokkien mee or wat tan hor in any malaysian place but they didn't have this so kuay teow it was. Decent amount of chicken and prawns. Full of chinese pork sausage just the way i like it. When I asked for sambal the lady went and grabbed a lot of it. You never get that anywhere in NZ, it's always just a small portion.

They even have Kuih.

Keep up the hard work, I will be back for sure. Hopefully with more people and I will be recommending you.

Have been here twice in the last month, and quite regularly over the past year. Truly amazing Malaysian food, delicious authentic flavours, and very consistent. Honestly pretty much everything is good on the menu, though I keep going back for the new goreng. The service, while occasionally a little abrupt, is extremely efficient. The Terrace outlet is also excellent.

This Malaysian restaurant reminds me of home. The menu is unique, so unique that you can even find these in Auckland.

The dishes taste very very similar to what I have back home in Penang. For the price and the portion it can never go wrong.

Tried pretty much half of the menu and there aren’t any dishes that you wouldn’t like.

I would Recommend the claypot rice, mee goreng, mee Siam and the pasembur salad were so good that you wish there were more.

This place is constantly busy so I would suggest go in when it’s not peak hour. Do expect a long wait at lunch or dinner time.

Very good, tasty, and authentic Malaysian restaurant I sometimes go to. Always popular and crowded. Surely it’s pricey if you know how much it costs back in Malaysia, but that’s the Kiwi price, as things are more expensive here, and it’s more or less the same as other places in the city.

Lovely food, we were all new at this place but the way Staff addressed us at the counter while taking order was fabulous, she told each and every ingredient in our curry and explained how’s it gonna taste, sweet tangy spicy each and every bit of it. Food was fantastic plus the staff were so friendly that we didnt had any issues with tables plates spoons, nothing! It was too good, I can still taste that awesome taste of curry we had, rice, sweets. FABULOUS ! Kuddos Team Little Penang, heaps of cheers 🍾

Went for dinner with the faimily on Friday night at the Little Penang on The Terrace. Was expecting the restaurant to be very quiet since there is not a lot of night life in the area but was pleasantly surprised to find the restaurant full of people (but not overcrowded).
We were greeted by a very friendly waitress and shown to our table. Menu is quite simple with a focus on a few types of Malaysian Street Food.
We ordered a couple of platters and chicken wings for starters, some Char Keow Teow, Claypot Rice, Nasi Lemak and Hokkien Char for mains.
The the starters were very nice and came out very efficiently. Mains were also fantastic but was slightly annoying that they did not come out at the same time and when the Nasi Lemak came out a few people at the table had already finished eating.
The Char Keow Teow also had Lap Cheong (Chinese Sausage) in it which I am not a big fan off as it is very sweet. This is just a personal preference though and other than that it was absolutely fantastic.
The staff were extremely friendly and knew how to interact well with the customers. Service was also pretty good and price for the entire meal was very reasonable. No doubt we will be returning to sample the rest of their menu.

Food - 8/10
Service - 8/10
Ambiance - 8/10
Price - 8/10

Would I return - Definitely

On a short visit to Wellington and stumbled upon this lil gem. It was quite busy and we were very fortunate to get a seat as they filled up very fast.
The food was pretty good. We ordered the nasi lamak and nasi goreng. It took a while to flag down the waitresses but it was understandable as they were very busy. After ordering, it took around 15 min for the food to come out. The curry in nasi lamak was quite flavourful with a tinge of spicy. The lemon grass chicken which came with both dishes was juicy and tender. The nasi goreng was very flavourful. Overall a pretty good, and very filling experience.

We really enjoyed our dinner here - we tried the mango kerabu salad, roti with chicken kapitan curry, and claypot rice and it was excellent.  The desserts were special too - we loved the pandan cake and the pandan sticky rice kuih!  The flavours were authentic and the prices were almost Malaysian too. The food here brings me right back home! I’ll fly to Wellington just for meals here! The Assam laksa really hit the spot with the right balance of spicy and sour, and it’s topped authentically with slices of pink torch ginger flower (Bunga kantan), pineapple, cucumber and prawn paste (heh ko).
The lor bak with the slices of pork; well seasoned in five spice powder and wrapped in Beancurd skin was good too. Don’t get me started on how good that Pandan cake is as well.

It was so amazing that we actually hand carried food all the way back to Auckland.

Last day in Welly dropped in this place for lunch. Ordered mee siam with chicken kapitan curry, Pasembur salad, fried bbq pork ball & 5 spice pork roll, plus a piece of pandan slice sort of.
Big heart for my salad and if I know it would come out in full big plate size I would not order pork bun and roll.
Pasembur salad is made of cooked vege slice, mainly cabbage slice, tofu, vege fritter toped with thier special sweet peanut sauce and other good stuff. Thank god finally I am eating cooked vege which is not cold in a south asian restaurant, one point for little penang, gonna ditching those fusion places in akld lol. mixed flavour, texture which is just grt, there is sliced steamed egg on the side to boost up protein intake. love the pork bun as well, pork in which is seasoned sweet. pork roll is bit dry and lack of flavour. However the not quite tantive service is the only downside, the wiatress and waiter are lovely pple though, but feel a bit disoriented as first timer as to how to work out the menu, where to order things like that. Kind of an overall impression of welly hospitality, etc never have to get water myself in any akld cafe which is 10 times busier than the ones in here. guess we are spoiled back home.

First time to dine here after hearing good reviews and boy I am so glad we booked here for dinner tonight. Make sure you book a table as they can be really busy. Tried their Nasi lemak, Teh Tarik and Nyonya platter. With Nasi lemak you can choose the curry, so tried Nyonya with medium spice. The dish includes lemon chicken wing, Ikan dilis, peanuts, sambal and egg. With the platter, my favourite was the lobak. I would say their food has an authentic MalaysIan taste. I will definitely come back to try the other dishes.

Ok so this has a lot of hype surrounding it, not sure it quite lived up to it but it was still a good, reasonably priced feed. We got the clay pot rice (Photo #2), which was kind of dry, so having an egg over the top is probably the way to go for next time.... this was enough food for two people. We also got the kapitan curry with jasmine rice and roti (Photo #1). This was a very mild curry, the lemongrass flavour is very strong though.... they served it with some spicy stuff on the side so that was good as we were able to make the curry spicier. Staff were friendly and attentive, it is a busy restaurant though so a little patience is required. Overall, it was a good experience, not one of my absolute faves but would definitely come back!

Discovered Little Penang while trying to find Malaysian in Wellington CBD. First impressions were average with fairly stale interior and seating.

The food more than made up for that though and we found ourselves in a bustling restaurant! We shared a number of dishes - curry puffs to start then vegetarian mi goreng, nasi goreng, fish fillet (otak otak) and bihun goreng. All the dishes were delicious, freshly made and presented well. All were washed down with some nicely made teh tariks!

Went here couples of time and the foods were never disappointing.

They are famous for the Char Koay Teow but I went the other direction and chose Claypot rice on my first visit, and Hokkien Char on my latest visit, with a side of Lobak and the pandan cake (I forgot the name)

The Pandan cake is a must try and a must have for every visit, a great dessert yet not too sweet for an appetizer.
Lobak is a good appetizer if you prefer savory appetizer.
I personally prefer Claypot rice than the Hokkien Char, but nonetheless both were filling dishes.

Little Penang is a really authentic eatery that never fails to please. We got takeout on Saturday night quite late in the evening but was no trouble. We ordered a medium Mee Goreng to share between two and a medium chicken curry with roti and rice. The Mee Goreng was nicely spiced and a massive bonus that it comes covered in deep fried vegetable pieces. Very tasty and always a busy restaurant. If you dont feel like sitting in, (although I recommend as the decor is awesome including the classic painting of men circled round a table) the takeaway board is cheaper and there are also daily specials. Definitely try dishes that you havent already because you wont be dissapointed!

Came here after my te papa musuem trip. The place is well maintained. Staff were friendly and the setup was simple and nice. Theres a massive board for you to see the menu so it will save you time. You will need to order and pay 1st before finding a seat which can be annoying when its crowded.
The food was good. I would say it even taste better than anything melbourne can offer. The price is a little high but does taste good. I ordered the nasi lemak with nyonya curry. The only complaint i had was the rice. They used old rice to serve instead of fresh rice. The rice formed into solid chunks. I would suggest avoid the nasi lemak and try other dishes.
Final thought: I would recommend this place but avoid the nasi lemak as its below average.

This place was absolutely packed on a weekday night! We were seated very quickly though.

Service was fast and friendly. The food was super authentic and flavourful. My sister enjoyed her mee goreng. My husband had a clay pot rice which is a very iconic Singaporean dish but you don't often see on the menu at Makaysian restaurants in New Zealand. Very grateful that they make vegetarian options for most dishes too, substituting them with tofu :)

For desserts we were quite full so Just shared a bowl of banana fritters. They weren't what I was expecting, more like fried banana flavour donuts/ muffins. Very unique and yummy :)

Highly recommended!

I have now visited the legendary Little Penang on a number of occasions, and am yet to be let down by this fine establishment.

Within my humble family Lil' Penang has a wondrous reputation, and is acclaimed just as highly as the 1997 cult classic Australian comedy 'The Castle.

As a relative newcomer to the empire of Penang I was worried that the lofty expectations created by my peers would lead to inevitable disappointment at a mediocre inner city Malaysian joint. However, just as if witnessing the fulfillment of a great prophecy my heart was warmed as I accepted the embrace of a mystical place no longer foreign to me - and I knew that what had been whispered was true.

It just seems to have the balance of everything I look for in a restaurant, a diverse and authentic menu full of interesting flavours; a warm and lively atmosphere; very reasonable prices and grand serving sizes; and above all, that feel good x-factor which is so hard to pin down.

If anything, the only thing it could be missing is the one absolute knock out dish but there are many which come close. My personal favourite would have to be the sumptuous Otak Otak, as I am a sucker for the freshness and vibrancy of coconut and fish.

Please, do yourself a favour and visit this sacred spot.

A colleague of mine bought back an epic looking lunch. She told me it was from Little Penang. So guess where I went the next day!

I was on my way back from a meeting and in a rush. Not being familiar and with a queue growing behind me - I chose something quickly. A rice based dish with chicken and sausage.

I wouldn't usually go for a rice based dish, rather noodles, but I gave it a go. It was $13.50, which is getting expensive but it is a big portion with a good ratio of elements.

It didn't blow me away initially and I was wondering if I'd made a wrong decision. But as I ate it, I just wanted more and next thing I knew I'd pretty much finished it.

Tasty!

Had dinner with a friend and the restaurant was busy. Entree was served very fast but we waited long time for our main. The problem was here, two tables who came in and ordered after us had their main served faster than ours. When I tried to speak to the waitress about the waiting time, she went defensive and started yelling at us that the food would arrive soon. Despite the excellent food, wasnt impressed with the service at all.

What do I say about little penang! excellent Malaysian food! Full stop. Their Nasi Gorengs and rice meals are nice and you will always want to go there again and again. Why is it not a 5? Because the acoustics of the place can be really hitting your ears especially during peak dinner hours. So if you are in for a quiet meal and a decent conversation, this is not the place you want to be.

I cannot stay away from this place.
The food here is authentic, mouth-wateringly delish and a pleasant surprise for my taste buds every time I come back.
I went three times in a row last week for dinner then went back for lunch 😂
For starters the Nyonya Platter to share comes with an assortment of tasty nibbles including veggie fritters, peanut tofu and a delicious sausage called Lobak. Other great starters are the Pasembur and Kerabu Salad.
My favourite main is either the Mee Goreng which is generous and topped with crispy vegetable fritters or the Kapitain chicken curry with roti and coconut rice. The chicken has been cooked so tenderly that when your fork hits it it literally falls apart and is perfectly succulent.
Dear God just writing about it makes me want to go back for more 🙀
Staff are so friendly and all smiles (they probably know how amazing their food is) definitely a favourite of mine!!!

I would rate it as the best Malaysian restaurant in Wellington central. Hugely flavorsome food. The Mee Goreng and the Claypot rice are our favorites. I haven't seen the CPR in any other Malaysian restaurant in Wellington. Definitely worth a try. But I would say that I found the Char Keow Teow quite bland. But overall a very nice unassuming restaurant dishing out tasty food.

You can order from the menu (takes a bit longer) or order from the ready-made dishes featured in the glass counter in the front (curry puffs, baked pork buns, chicken drumsticks, and two more curry dishes---varying by the day).

Their Mee Siam with curry is very good value for money, and gluten free too because it's rice noodles.

Our other favorites are Char Kway Teow, Assam Laksa, and the stellar Nasi Tok Ma.

Nasi goreng good and filling too. Has crunchy pork bits, chicken slices, prawns, an egg and a chicken wing. Hubby helped eat the rice but still had leftovers.

Loved the salted coconut cream pandan dessert. Took home a slice as daughter couldn 'T get enough. For beverage, enjoyed the tarik and rose milk

Little Penang is a very popular Malaysian restaurant on Dixon Street. I came here a little while ago and was really impressed with the quality of food and the amazing value for money. For entree we shared some mini curry puffs, I don’t think I’ve had one better, the pastry was absolutely perfect. I ordered a drink which was milk based but was sickly sweet. I think they had flavoured it with rose-water. Rose-water should always be used sparingly but they had put lashing of it in and it was a struggle to drink. For main, I had the mild chicken curry with coconut rice and roti. Everything was fresh and the curry was very flavoursome, I really enjoyed the coconut and kaffier lime flavours. I’m not the biggest fan of Malaysian food but this is definitely one of the better Malaysian restaurants I have been to. The service was pretty good but there was a bit of a wait for my main when my friend had already received hers. When we were paying, we bought a little cake (not sure what it’s called) which looked like a green lamington. It tasted bizarre!

This is my absolute favourite place for Malaysian food, and I struggle to order anything other than megoreng. I've introduced several people to Little Penang and they too are floored by how tasty it is.

There is decent amount of seating and even in busy they are really efficient in preparing orders quite quickly!

Was here for Sat lunch and it was really nice to be able to taste some authentic Chinese Malaysian food in Wellington. The beef currypuff was delish - lightly-fried and crispy, very reminiscent of how a proper Malaysian curry puff should taste like.

I also ordered the Hokkien char mee. Despite being pleased that it was served with a few (note: two, yes i counted ) pieces of fried pork lard (just what you'd expect if the same dish was ordered at a roadside stall in Penang), i did think the sauce was a little bit too sweet for a dish like that.

If you're ever up in Auckland, i highly recommend Malaysian Rice & Noodle House in Blockhouse Bay. Order the same dish and you will taste a pleasant difference for 10% less the price, 5% more quantity and 50% more oomph.

Massive Max himself had to accept defeat when confronted with a meal of such prodigious portions.

And so enraptured by the aroma emanating from the kitchen was Cohen "Cobra" Nichols that he, the salty snake himself, lost all sense for the passage of time, and had to make a desperate late request for a takeaway container so he could get to work at the agreed upon hour.

Anyway. It was pretty good.

Have tried all the dishes here and their flavours and colours say Malaysia. They are delicious. I love the curry here, though it can be a hit-or-miss (more hit than miss). Sometimes it's amazing and sometimes the curry is overloaded with coconut milk/cream. The price range and portions are reasonable. There are times when they serve food unique to a festival in Malaysia which I enjoy a lot like rice dumplings. Will go back again for more.

Definitely a good cheap eat in Wellington, only downside is so liquor license so if that's important to you then there you go

I haven't tried a variety of dishes as I am a big rendang fan so usually stick with the nasi lemak so I can get my fried egg and chicken wing with it.

I usually am not a roti bread fan as I find it too sweet, but the one from little Penang is so good I love it! So light and not overly oily at all.

One of the very best Malaysian restaurant in Wellington!

Spot on flavours and good amount of dinner for a pretty reasonable price. (Although I believed the portion was bigger)

Nasi lemak and mee goreng are my favourite. A very traditional and text book nasi lemak like no other.. And a big portion of mee goreng with seafood fritters.

For dessert I recommend the Pandan cake from the cabinet, I would definitely come back just for that!!

Not many options but the chef really nailed all the specialities the store offers.

Stopped by on a visit to Wellington.  There were many Malaysian customers coming through the door, which is always a good sign.  Flavours of the laksa were absolutely delicious, not too salty like some places can be and just the right amount of heat.  We found the service excellent - the staff gave our son a free banana fritter, and apologised for the wait on the meals (which was only about 10-15 minutes).  Will be back again.

Wow what a gem of a place! I was visiting a friend in Wellington and we were on the hunt for some inexpensive eats. We came on the recommendation of friends and it did not disappoint.

We started with baked BBQ pork bun and a curry puff both were wonderfully morish. The service was fast and friendly. A lovely knowledgable and enthusiastic waitress recommended I get the Nasi Lemak (coconut rice and curry) while my friend got a chicken curry and roti (an incredible price - $8.90).

The portions were huge! We could barely stomach the last mouthfuls. I loved the garnishes of sambal and nuts. The food here was so authentic and I would come here again on my next trip in a heartbeat.

They don't do byo or sell alcohol which I actually think is awesome. They aim to be a family friendly restaurant that is there for people to solely enjoy the food and have a good time. Named after Penang Island in Malaysia, Little Penang offers authentic Malaysian cuisine in the heart of Wellington. Looking for a warm & filling hot meal for a casual lunch, my partner and I enjoyed our first time at Little Penang this weekend.

On our visit, about 1pm on a Saturday afternoon, Little Penang was busy and crowded as always. However, the restaurant is spacious and accommodates many tables for guests, which adds to the vibrant and lively atmosphere. To me, the decor is rather plain, and if they had dim lighting, candles, and a cocktail menu, I would also love to come here for a classy dinner or date night.

The food selection features a variety of meats and vegetables with different sauces & curries, which are all displayed in a cabinet at the front. I chose one labelled 'Mild Vegetable', served with rice, adding a turmeric chicken drumstick. Along with a drink, Charlie's Orange & Mango Honest Fizz, the three came to $19.30.

My mild vegetable curry dish served vegetables including carrots, potatoes, tofu, and mushrooms, while also being served with cucumber, egg, and the most deliciously flavoured peanuts. I absolutely loved them and wish I could simply order a dish with the peanuts and rice. Overall, I enjoyed my vegetables and rice - there was a pleasant and tasty variety served in generous portions. My turmeric chicken drumstick was average; it was enjoyable but could've been more flavoursome and tender.

My partner chose the mild chicken curry dish and added a pork bun, spending $15.80. He had the pork bun first and liked the texture because it was baked, as well as the delicious pork inside. He chose noodles to be served with his chicken and thought they complemented each other well; he loved the mildly spiced chicken that wasn't too hot, the curry it was drenched in and the overall flavours. While he enjoyed the chicken he thought it was a little dry.

Overall, a great first experience at Little Penang. The restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the food is very wholesome, homely, and nourishing. I'd highly recommend Little Penang if you crave delicious and authentic Malaysian cuisine that is simple and affordable.

A slight mix up with my order as didn't get my entree order till almost finished main. But they gave me it free to take back to hotel for later .Had the char keow teow which was definataley the best I have had in New Zealand. And probably as good as the ones I have had in Penang. Plenty of sausage. Prawns. Etc

Went back next night had had hokien char which was good too
Sadly my last night in Wellington or else I would go tomorrow also :)

Will be back.

Really nice Char Keow Teow here, good setting and good service. Food is quick to arrive and pretty generous portions. The Char Keow Teow also has all the bits you would expect to see (sausage, fat, pickled veg etc). They understand allergies too and cater well for this. Original rating 4.5.
21/5/16: Dined in today and got a char keow teow, hot with no egg, a medium for the mrs and a mee siam to takeaway with no egg. Food took ages but it was busy so could understand this, had to ask for my wifes dish because although I waited before eating (she insisted I just dive in) I was a fair way through with no sign of hers. Have dined here a few times and had hot spice level but today was another thing altogether, even the medium was pretty spicy... anyway left with the takeaway and it was full of egg, so had to go back for a refund.... stink one all round today.

Little Penang has become one of my favourites in Wellington, but not instantly. My first visit back when it first transitioned from a humble takeaway to a sit-down restaurant was underwhelming. That time, I had the Char Keow Teow which was the blandest Char Keow Teow I've ever had.

I hesitated coming back, but I'm glad I did.

Many months later, Little Penang has certainly come of age. It's bustling (in spite of not serving/licensed for alcohol), food is pumped out quickly in authentic, rich and colourful flavours.

We shared our dishes: (1) The roti, at $3.90, was quite big and came with a little bowl of curry sauce. The roti wasn't too greasy, had a lightly crisp outside but fluffy inside - done to my liking. (2) The Assam Laksa, their Thursday night special, wasn't your usual laksa. It was a fish sweet/sour broth, perhaps an acquired taste to some, but I reckon it's a great dish to try if you wanted something special and different. (3) The Clay-pot rice. For $15.90 it was a very filling dish with a generous serving of chicken, Chinese pork sausage, and mushroom cooked with the rice in the pot. This was a winning dish, and you won't find something like this in every Malaysian Restaurant in NZ.

Little Penang remains humble with its service, decor and ambition (don't expect this to become a byo anytime soon - perhaps a good thing for the non-students). But I understand how it has ascended to become one of Wellington's most loved and iconic Asian restaurants. The food speaks volumes for this place, you must check it out.

We weren't even expecting huge portion. But we were proven wrong. Service and product was superb. It was a great experience all in all. :D The food is also delicious and worth having. My friends and I all thought the same, that it will potentially be a new "go-to" restaurant. I really recommend it. Price isn't bad too. :D I went for four as rating because I'm fuzzy with my design. Basic setup but the food more than makes up for it. Best nasi goreng I have ever had - and I see some complaints about it being cooked in pork fat, but that's what actually gives it that little extra flavour, plus they it's always the perfect amount of spiciness (whether I've specified mild, medium or hot).
The daily special dish is always a treat, and always very different from what is offered at other Malaysian restaurants. As a result, the assam laksa is a favourite dish.
I recommend making a booking when eating in, because although they have moved into a bigger space, it still packs out very quickly.

Having heard much about how authentically Malaysian the food is at Little Penang, we looked forward to a pre-show meal there earlier this week. The menu is short and to the point; no descriptions of dishes but the main courses are basically variations on nasi (rice), mee (noodles) and roti. The mee goreng was excellent and the roti with chicken curry was delicious with very tender pieces of meat. The service was friendly and our meals arrived quickly; we were glad to have ordered at the start of the dinner rush as we could see how busy they were getting during our meal. Be warned that it's cold and drafty when sitting by the window so you'll need a coat. A good cheap and cheerful meal option in central Wellington.

The "please wait to be seated sign" has been under construction for quite sometime and while my husband and I stand there waiting, sometimes other patrons walk in past us and us take a seat. Fantastic delicious yum yum yum! I had read a really great review about this place, having lived in Wellington and loving Asian-style food I was suspicious. But I gave it a go during the busy lunchtime period and I was tastefully surprised. The female host (didn't catch her name) was happy to help us and asked what sort of dish we'd like to try, I had the vegetarian nasi goreng which was aaaamazing. My partner ordered a mixed curry and coconut rice dish (forgot the name) and it was so flavoursome, really surprising considering many of the Asian restaurants in Wellington are so watered down and unauthentic. Latest Review:
My tastebuds evolve everytime I come here, whether it is for a quick takeout meal or to dine in, my favourite regular dish is the Mee Siam with chicken and prawns.   What really makes this dish is the inclusion of the home made sambal.
If I could, I would probably buy a jar of it to take home.

Little Penang also does a special dish of the day and the day that we just so happened to visit was otak otak which is basically a fish paste that is steamed or grilled in banana leaf - simply delicious.

Please check out my website for an indepth review.

Second Review:
Tried this place earlier this year (March 2012)
Having moved next door to  larger premises which now houses more tables and through word of mouth this place is now bustling which is definitely better than the small and cramped conditions of their original store next door.

The menu is short and simple that allows them to provide more emphasis to produce good quality dishes.

The curry puff still have not been improved that sits in the warmer for hours .  There is a selection of sweet morsels  which are interesting.

The claypot rice is very good, which I would recommend for you to try if you get the opportunity.

Please refer to my website for an indepth review.

First Review of their original store:

Menu is very limited, quite expensive for the serving sizes and did not have a lot of seating space.

I have not yet gone back to give it another try to see whether things have changed.

I did a quick stop (take away) last night (November 2012). Thought I'd give this place another try.

Picked up a curry puff and some sweetend bean curd (my favourite dessert)

Curry puff was very average. No spice, full of potatoes and hardly any meat, and itwas cold - hate to think how long it had been sitting in the warmer for.
The Tau Fu Far (sweetened bean curd) was very nice, however could have done with another spoonful - then I would have been very happy.

Would be nice if they cooked less food, but cook it more often or on demand, so its piping hot and fresh.

Pros:
- Great flavours
- Staff casual and friendly.
- Cassava Cake is simply amazing!

Cons:
- Portions rather small for the price you pay. The $11.5 Nasi Lemak came with a reasonable portion of rice but only three small pieces of chicken and less than about a cup of curry sauce. Considering that we can find equivalent great tasting curry but with portions twice the size for about $12 dollar in nearby restaurants.
- Not many places to sit down and eat-in (only three tables).
- Less considerate customers holding tables by placing bags and jackets on them.

With out a doubt the best Maylasian food in Wellington. The food has love in it, made from tradition, with care, from what can only be good hearts and good ingredients and I can tell you I have NEVER been to a restaurant that every dish is so unique and tasty that I dont have a favorite dish as they are all superb! The flavors are amazing, with traditional ingredients like ginger flower, on top of fresh mint and fresh pineapple in the most interesting and tasty Laksa I have ever had.
The different and special mushrooms for the medicine soup. The large noddles, the wonderful lemon grass chicken and the home made curry puffs, the best. The Masala Tea is wonderful to sip it after a meal, sometimes with one of the wonderful cakes, try the Penang. The family who run it are kind and genuine, I very much want to see them do well, as the food has so much nourishment, the owners are friendly with real smiles, lacking in hospitality these days. Congratulations to them, having the courage to give us the real taste of Malaysia not the Westernized version. They call the food, street food, so its a bit of a change from the usual cafes and restaurants style. It really has that drop in any time and eat feel. You will be welcomed, and nicely educated through the menu. The prices make it so that you can eat there a lot! Every person I have introduced have all loved it, 5 stars is real.

One of my favourites. Even better now as they have moved next door and upscaled. A lot more tables :). Nasi Lemak to die for and the best baked pork buns in the world!!!

Tucked away on Dixon St, this wee gem features Malay and Indonesian food that I've only ever tasted when in Malaysia or Indonesia. The food is tasty and extremely authentic, which is a good thing as there is a heap of so called Malaysian places serving westernised yuck that is mostly cocoanut milk and sugar with generic curry paste. Not so at Little Penang, there you get the real deal and the taste difference is night and day.

If thats the good, what about the not-so-good? The place itself is pretty basic, with a counter and several picnic tables. The staff are really pleasant but need to focus more on cleaning the tables after patrons have left them. Small change really as this place should instantly appeal to anyone who has travelled through southeast asia immeadiately

Went there on a Friday lunch time. Peak time so I opted for the quick meal combo of meesiam and curry which came quickly. Had Milo dinosaur too. It was yummy and massive. I wish the curry was in a separate bowl as I didn’t know it would be totally drenched on the meesiam and I usually prefer it separate. Would request in the future. Service was great and would return if I were to visit wellington again.

We came here with big group of friends and colleagues. We enjoy the food as many of them are very close to Indonesian food with similar level of spiciness. I have halal char kwe tiau and nyonya platter as well. I do enjoy salad kerabu and pasembur. We just had to wait a bit longer as we came together, although we had ordered our food in advance. We can also order halal food here. Parking during lunch hours can be challenging. The restaurant is accessible for those using wheelchairs. There are high chairs for the kids and toilet for disabled is also available

One hell of a good genuine char kuey teow. Full of flavour and ingredients. Not halal by the way. Front of house staff need to be more vigilant with customer queue / ask before seating during peak hours. We arrived first but one of the young men decided to seat the people who arrived later than us.

Enjoyed the Roti & nyona chicken curry; however, needed an extra roti, as a single one wasn't enough. Wife had the Nasi Lamak with vege curry. Was pretty good but needed a little more spice and depth. Would visit again to try out the noodle dishes.

Great tasting food and good prices for the main dishes! Roti was so yum, gotta come back for that. The curry puffs (4) were very small for $7 though, and my coconut rice didn't have much coconut flavour and was a tad bit dry. Overall still a good meal though and they did have a seat for us 9 people without a reservation so that was appreciated 👍

Too noisy. Crowded and packed to the rafters. No place to squeeze through if you have a booking at the far end of the room. Pleasant staff, but very slow service. Food did not meet my expectations. Mild flavoured and sweeter than normal Asian food. Probably modified to suit Kiwi palates. Would have preferred to be advised that the food was sweet. We ordered medium. Well lesson learned.

Great spot to have authentic Malaysian food! The Hokkien Mee was great! Deliciously rich broth packed with beautiful flavour and heat. The ambiance brings me back to the high school cafeteria... Not great. Their pandan desserts however are addictively good!

Went here on lunch time weekdays so super busy but queue is pretty fast and food is fast serving considering they are so busy. I tried the roti and nona curry. Really good. I enjoyed it. They also have malaysian traditional kueh for dessert. Also the drink, they have milo dinosaur!! I don’t even know if I am in NZ or Malaysia anymore. Lol. Food is good. Definitely will come back!

2023 Highly recommend the Mee Goreng! This dish has a luscious sweet sauce and excellent savoury flavour with a hint of… tomato!? There is an excellent chilli oil used, too. The mushrooms and charred tofu give a great char (hei) aroma and flavour! There are loads of textures — chewy, sticky fritter; soft tofu; crispy lettuce and peanuts; and noodles with a slight bite! Sensational! This dish was $21.00 on the 11/03/23. Mamak Mee Goreng (Vegetarian): egg noodles, fritter, mushrooms, sprouts, egg, firm tofu, lettuce, peanuts, and fried onions. 2022 Phenomenal Penang centric Malaysian food! My favourite dishes, which I highly recommend trying are Mee Siam and Char Kuay Teow! Their Teh Tarik is sweet, creamy, strong and delicious. Really love enjoying that drink after a meal. The prices are in the higher side for an Asian restaurant in Wellington, but it’s worth it. The portions are generous.

Delicious Malaysian food. My personal hobby is trying Malaysian food in NZ, wasn't disappointed by the flavours and portions here. We walked in at around 7pm on a busy Friday night without a reservation but still managed to be seated 15mins later. The kitchen forgot one of our orders but made up for it with a complimentary appetizer.

The food is exceptionally delicious and the servers are kind, but they can get exceptionally hectic if it gets a little busy. But it’s worth the wait, the textures and tastes of every dish are out of this world good.

I was extremely impressed with the nasi lemak at your restaurant. It was clear that it was made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, and it was cooked with care. I would highly recommend your nasi lemak to anyone looking for a delicious and authentic Malaysian meal. In addition to the delicious food, I was also very impressed with the service I received from my server, Moy. She was polite, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. She made sure that I had everything I needed and that I was enjoying my meal.
