Amazing FnC. Cooked perfectly by nice people. Chips lovely crisp and dry
Had amazing fish and chips at the chippery...rather than the traditional beer battered I opted for the garlic butter fish and crinkle cut fries....it was great also the tartare sauce was delicious...
...will he dining soon again..
A fish restaurant that makes a statement by showing off their fish right at the entrance needs to be pretty sure about how good their food is.
Fresh, crunchy, tasty fish and chips. I had the elephant fish, some calamari and kumara fries.
Young team, good energy, eco-oriented.
A definite Yes!
The fish and chips were fresh
The staff are very friendly and the service is great
The eating area is clean and it can get a bit busy
We will definitely come back
Visited because of the recommendation in Lonely Planet. The restaurant is small but nicely furnished and clean. The food was lovely and reasonably priced. Cooked well. They were very environmentally conscious with cardboard containers and recycling bins with clear directions as to what went where.
Had the soft shell crab burger with calamari. Bother we’re very tasty, I only used the lemons provided no need for extra sauce. The only reason I give this place a 4 put of 5 is because the size of the side portion. If I pay $6 I expect it to be more the 8 pieces.
Gourmet fish and chips!
This fish and chip shop has a wonderful menu. You can choose to have your fish beer battered, panko crumbed, tempura battered, gluten-free battered or grilled and you can have hand cut Agria chips, crinkle cut chips, beer battered chips, kumara chips or curly fries. There are several house salads and sides on offer or you can select something from their burger/sandwich menu. We opted to have grilled tarakihi and trevally, hand cut Agria chips and a coleslaw. It was delicious, beautifully cooked and presented and quite reasonably priced too.
Never disappointed with food from here, simply delicious and refreshing! I bought the halloumi burger and it was full of flavour and so filling! Reasonable pricing and the kumera chips are a must! Perfect meal to takeaway and sit at O’Bay in the evening! Make sure to go early or order before hand as it get so busy round 6:30-7!
The best gigantic chunky chips I have ever had!! Crunchy on the outside and somehow not dry on the inside. The weekday express lunch is a pretty big serving. Much bang for buck.
Best fish n chip shop! prices are higher than any other fish n chop shop but so is the quality! I’m usually not a big fan of burgers but their eggplant and halloumi burger is to die for! I’m also not a big fan for chips either but guess what.. I could have a scoop of curly fries to myself! their fish is also amazing and their beer batter is probably my favorite
Different from traditional fish chips shops, Mt Vic Chippery offers customers various options and the instruction is quite clear on the board. The staff is quite friendly but it can be a long wait to get food without pre-order.
The sizes of the fish are general, but the price is almost double of some shops. The chips (french fries) are expensive, too. That can be due to its location and the quality of food. The taste of fish is tender and nice and the chips are yummy especially kumara (sweet potato) chips.
One of the best fish and chips ive had in long time. Proce was cery inexpensive and the fish fresh. Choice of fries as well. I was tourist in Wellington but i would come back If i would stay for longer
I popped in just to have a little bite since this place was recommended to me. They had four types of fish available that day, I expected there to be more options but considering it's fresh I won't complain.
I got the Akaroa Salmon with fries. The fish was beautifully crumbed and the texture was just perfect. The fries were piping hot but I just couldn't resist stuffing my mouth.
Overall, if I have the time, I will definitely be coming back for more.
I love how they always have a veg and a vegan option for people like me 😋
The curly fries and the yum burgers are my fav. Being so close to theatres in welly, they are usually our after movie dinner place
Undoubtedly best crumbled fish 🐟, highly recommended. Ordered curly fries too, they were a bit oily than usual but still I definitely recommend this place for a good crumbled fish. 😊😊✌🏻👍🏻
Best fish burger ever. Panko crumbed, soft toasted bun, it's my go to. Never had a bad fish experience here. The chicken tenders, what was I thinking? Stick with the fish.
Very busy shop , yet, the service was surprising good and fast!
They offered a variety of fishs and different styles- We ordered different type of fish to try and all are delicious, although we all think the cheapest fish (Tarakihi) is the best
Best try in wellington!
The Mt Vic Chippery is a nice place and has good food. We ate there on New Year's Day. Take away is their primary business and they do delivery as well. We ordered Red Snapper, Ribaldo, Gurnard, with Kringle fries and Kumera fries. The portion size was fair but the price seemed a little high for the food and value presented. There were a continuous flow of people through restaurant which is always a good sign for any restaurant. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the Wellington area.
Generally good fresh fish. The idea of essentially building your meal is fun and innovative. The downside is the price - it's much more expensive than most local fish n chip places. The kumura chips are great though!
Because it was such a beautiful evening and had been stuck inside all day a mate and I felt like fish n chips so decided on the famed Mt Vic Chippery on Oriental Bay waterfront.
I was surprised by the layout of the menu as to expect you would purchase fish, then chips, sides and also a drink and some sauce. It's quite interesting the price range too in comparison to most fish n chips shops around places like Christchurch, Dunedin and Auckland. Expect to be able to wander in to the shop and purchase just a regular fish and a generous scoop of overly greasy chips but this was not the case here.
Although the agria potato chunks were really good I wouldn't be able to justify the $7+ large scoop pricing nor could I say that the Tarakihi fish was worth the $8+ for a small fillet.
Other than price and the scarcity of fish n chips shops in Wellington, the food was palatable and I was happy with the service so overall I can't say it was unreasonable. But I probably won't return.
Most times i've been here the staff are so lovely and the food is always hot, fresh and delicious! Always tidy and the staff deal with the busy-ness really well. Only once was I disappointed by the food but that won't stop me from going back :)
I love this place! I absolutely adore going in for fish and chips! . Due to circumstance that has left me mostly housebound I've been ordering a lot of food delivery. I was SO excited to realize that The Chippery delivered! But time and time again I've received cold food from you guys. Not once has the chips been hot. I only live a five minute drive from the chippery so it doesn't make much sense! Please put a little more thought in making sure your food arrives as good as it deserves to be. it's such a let down when I know how good it is in-store.
The place is as delicious as it is trendy. Value for money? Off. The. Charts. I got the kids pack as I was not especially hungry as I had been eating non-stop all day, but I did want the NZ fush 'n' chups experience and this was my final night (and therefore, last chance) to do so.
If this is the kids pack, then no doubt, kids are very well fed in these parts! It traditionally comes with curly fries, but I had heard about the house special chips and I was eager to try them, so asked if they could be swapped out, which was no problem. The chips did not disappoint and were as generous as they were hearty. Fish was only identified as being a 'bite' so not sure what I had but it too, was impressive - firm, white flesh, no skin (win!) and mild taste, the breading was well done and not too overpowering (which for me was important, I normally prefer batter). Tried the house made tartare, pleasant but will try another on my next visit. Ketchup came as standard with the pack, clearly it was Heinz Ketchup - always a winner.
This place is a true gem in a sea of wonder that is the food selection in this end of town. Don't miss it.
After being recommended to this place by the receptionist at our motel, my friends and I tried it out seeing as we're near the coast. For a fish and chips store, it was fairly big inside and the menu options were quite vast which was great.
I ordered the Tarahiki fish cooked with panko crumbs. To accompany this, I had a small green salad. The fish was cooked really well and the batter was fried perfectly. It also came with a small wedge of lemon in the box.
For the price, it was quite decent but the salad was a bit small for the price you pay for it.
All in all, I found the food and sauces nice and it was also great to find a fish and chips that gave you more than 2 options on how you wanted your fish cooked. I would definitely recommend this place.
Veggie and vegan burgers are amazing! So tasty and such good value. It can be pretty hard to find a decent veggie burger in Wellington sometimes, but this was perfect, I added a little home made Aioli to the vegan burger which made it even more amazing but it's great without it too. The agria fries are so crispy and yummy. Would come back any time.
Excellent food! We got the Warehou and crinkle cut chips and they were fantastic! The line was long but it was worth it. Chips were crisp and the fish was perfect.
On holiday from Auckland and gave this place a try after the great reviews. My wife had the holloumi burger and I had the Cajun fish burger - both were amazing! The kumara fries were yum and the kids loved the curly fries. The only thing I would improve is to have a better kids menu other than just a kids cheeseburger.
This was just around the corner from my house and I was a regular customer here. Quick and easy and the quality of the food is great. Strongly recommend the beer battered chips.
Been wanting to go here for so long and absolutely loved it. Burger and fries were both amazing and even when it was super busy the wait was not long at all.
Will absolutely go back again.
Very busy so expect a wait! Seriously amazing calamari. We chose take away as it was too busy to eat in. My companion loved their beef burger too and hand cut chips are amazing. Just avoid if you are in a hurry!
HANDS DOWN best kumura chips I have ever had! also a vegan burger option which was delish! Highly reccomend to anyone in the area! Can't wait to go back for more 👅
I did a side by side comparison of Mt Vic Chippery (which scores highest in Wellington Zomato for fish and chips - 4.2) with Cuba Street's Seamarket (which scores one of the lowest - 2.4). This may at first seem to be a bad thing to do, because the results would be inevitable, but like a lot of things in life assumption is the mother of all ( a bad word) ups.
We rang on the phone at the same time, asking for a crumbed fillet of fish and one scoop of chips. Mt Vic were pleasant and gave me a choice of fish - I asked for the best. They gave me a choice of chips I asked for ordinary (battered, curly, kumara .. the choice was surprising). They asked what sort of potato!!! I asked what they suggested - Agria.
When I rang Seamarket, he asked me my name, slightly off handedly (in comparison).
We gave them fifteen minutes (thats how long Mt Vic said) and collected the packets.
Seamarket $7.90.
Mt Vic $12.00
Packaging:
Mt Vic came in a thick mini pizza box - obviously pretty classy.
Seamarket: came in a cardboard tray, within a brown paper bag with vent holes.
On opening - the first surprise. Seamarket looked pretty full, Mt Vic looked pathetic.
Fish: Mt Vic was Blue Warehou, Seamarket didn't say.
Mt Vic was a rather thick fish, on the dry side, its crumbed batter was pleasant. - one of the three of us thought this the best.
The Seamarket was thinner and the crumb slightly crisper, with an equally pleasant flavour - two of the three thought the fish better.
Chips:
Mt Vic's were ok but because of their thickness they were more interior that caramelised outer crust. Rather dull.
Seamarket's were classic, ordinary chips, not brilliant, but not bad.
Two of three preferred Seamarket.
There can be no such thing as a perfect chip - the chips that I like aren't likely to rate in your eyes, and probably vice versa. i like the crispy little dark brown bits that settle to the bottom of the bag, and I like slightly soggy chips that will bend downwards when held horizontal. I don't like fluff in the middle.
So - what is the conclusion? Yours might be different but I think:
If I wanted straight fish and chips I'm throwing away money going to Mt Vic. BUT at Mt Vic you get choice, and a lot of it. You may feel more like a foodie at Mt Vic, exercising some sort of connoisseurship in making choices - some might say it was snobbery, but it makes you feel good.
But to my mind connoisseurship is probably more about realising that Seamarket is better for straight fish and chips and Mt Vic for the days when we want kumara or curly in nice packaging, or we want to impress Aucklanders with the foodie capital's top ranked chippery.
Take what you want from it, but it does make you think...... the danger of making assumptions I guess.
If you want quality fish and chips, this is the top choice. So fresh and large portions. I highly recommend the agria chips. Snapper was deliciously fresh too.
I really like this place.. A really cool chippy with a great selection of fish. Burgers, squid rings.. The menu really does have a great variety. Not much of an eat in place at all but great for a quick takeaway and convenient to order online.

I went here 2 days ago, and it was my very first time having fish n chips in NZ, and I'm glad I chose this place. I ordered battered fish n chips with kumara fries. both were AWESOME! staffs were friendly and helpful. I also had sweet chilli sauce, and I guess it doesn't blend well with both main and side dish.
Love the burgers here!! Fresh ingredients, large portions, and reasonable prices! I had the chicken burger which was delicious, crispy chicken with Cajun seasoning!
The kumara fries are a must. Would definitely return :)
Quite pricey but worth every cent. Probably the best fish and chips I've had in Wellington. They've got amazing fishes (depends on the day as sometimes some kinds are not available, but my favourite would be the gurnard) and delicious kumara fries, and I usually have these with their homemade aioli. Always craving for this!
If you are after some fancy fish and chips and do not mind paying premium prices then you definitely should give this place a try. Not only can you choose the type of fish and chips (from curly fries to wedges etc), you can also choose your batter.
The only down side I have about my meal was that it was slightly bit too salty for my liking. The first few bites/chips I had was great, but after while you will soon find that you are seeking something to help down all that oil and salt.
Please check my website for an indepth review.
AMAZING fish and chips, but I could be biased – it’s the only battered fish I can get being gluten free, they even use separate fryer! I love having an assortment of fresh fish to choose from and a choice of chips. After trying the array of chips they have on offer, I can safely say that you cannot go past the kumara chips, BEST IN TOWN. I do not mind paying extra for knowing that my fish is fresh and is cooked the way I like it!
90% of the time their fish and chips are on the mark, but once or twice the chips have been a little bit under and the fish batter a tad soggy. But I can forgive a couple of mistakes now and then because the kumara chips make up for it!
Handy hint is to order online to save yourself the wait.

If your looking for a place that does fish n chips properly this is it fresh battered fish and also different ways of having ur fish made puts u in control.
I've herd people complain about the price of it but in my opinion u get wht u pay for and the quality of the product is good so if you don't mind forking out a few extra bucks then I feel it's worth it.
Over all loved the food and the little box it came in and good location.

Fish n Chips yes it is lovely here go for the grilled version of fillets and their chips is so fresh u gotta love it ... Tiny little cramped space it does get crowded more like a takeaway place
Upmarket fish and chip shop! Most of the fish caught is from one of the owners who has his own commercial fishing quota! I have eaten here several times and had always been superb. On this occasion I had the fish burger. Generous piece of crumbed fish with a tangy tartare sauce on a toasted ciabatta bun. Excellent value at only $10
Awesome service with the food to match good selection of fish and cooked to perfection ? highly recommend the butterfish only wish it wasn't so busy.
I have been here so many times that I'm surprised I haven't gone off fish n chips! Mt Vic Chippery is amazing and delicious. More fish n chip shops need to be like these guys. I love how the chips aren't mouthfuls of oil and the fish tasty and light. The tartare btw.....is to die for.
A group of friends and I went ordered a large batch of fish and chips towards the end of last year. I found the crumbed fish to be,...not crumbed. It was an orange sock around fish.
The customer service was friendly and the prices were pretty decent.
Anyways, the chips weren't greasy and I'd definitely go again for the chips.
Fancy fish and chip shop that is always good. The pulled pork burger is delicious and a fave!
The angria chips are always good and prepared freshly.
One little note to make however, I ordered tarakihi one night and it was rather dry and had a very fishy taste and smell. Either it had been let out too long or was a little bit old - it was not enjoyable. Usually I get given fresh tasty fish - may have been a bad night. Won't stop me from not going again but I hope this does not become a trend.
Brilliant burger (had the beef), and the chips were massive! Only gripe is the new sliding doors installed are a pain in the ass to open and close.
Have been here a few times now.
It's just so damn good.
I love the way the menu is set up, you choose if you want grilled/battered/crumbed etc and choose which type of fish and style of fries etc.
Very, very nice packaging... everything is served in cardboard - I'm guessing it's recycled cardboard but would like to check that. Hope so. Ha - just phoned them up to check and it is indeed all recycled cardboard. And the phone conversation I just had reinforced the great vibe and attitude of all the staff at this place. Yeah!
Love the way the island in the middle invites everyone to eat together in a communal kind of way.
It's so fresh, so intentional and well thought-out, and SO Wellington. Love it.
I've been to this place 4-5 times and will keep coming back.
I only like gurnard, terakihi or snapper and haven't been let down on freshness or taste (I hate it when you pay for quality and get let down on taste).
I like the cardboard box/tray they come in - less mess.
Like the choice of chip as well but like the Scottish reviewer tend to prefer crinkle cut.
I can also vouch for the kumara.
Also like the people. The anti-choice woman wasn't there any of the times I went and my choices weren't scoffed at.
The gentle man who served me were very polite and helpful. Went the extra mile to ensure I was happy with my order. The prices are reasonable for what you get. Fish is very fresh. Would recommend to all!!!!
The quality of the food and their commitment to customer satisfaction are unbelievable.
Here's an example: On a busy Friday evening I ordered several items from the menu. At the final moment part of the order was accidentally dropped, and the way the staff recovered from this was a rare example of perfect customer service. Not only was the burger re-made and a generous offer of extra chips proffered but the entire order was re-made from scratch so that everything would still be hot when I walked out the door.
The food is almost always delicious and well made. The signage and packaging are also extremely carefully thought out and well designed.
This is what you wish all fish and chips shops would be like. If you opt for basic fish and chips, you will be impressed at how fresh and tasty it is. If, however, you decide to choose from the long list of fresh fish, and then choose the exact fillet from the display cabinet - then instructing them how you would like it prepared, and what sort of fries you would like with it... they take it to a whole new level. They even have online ordering!
This has to be the best fish and chips in Wellington. Yes, you pay a premium but boy do they deliver! That's why the queue is often back to the door and wait time ... well, always good to ask so you know if you should go off and do the groceries at coles, whatever ... and what do you get for this investment in time and money? fish that is fresh off the boat and varies according to the catch, your choice of chips (great big hand cut agria for me) and all different types of batter, including gluten free :O we've come a long way since the days of fish and chips wrapped in newspaper!
The BEST FISH and CHIPS in Wellington. Do not go anywhere else. The young staff are bright and breezy and happy in their work - a good sign. Good choice of fish and 5 or so types of chips. Different types of batter is great. I personally like the beer battered Tarakihi and chips. Absolutely would not go anywhere else on a Friday lunchtime and then head to Oriental Bay and park up and enjoy my lunch.
Got blue warehou n calamari. Nice and fresh, cooked just right. Calamari is big and tender, fish is soft and fresh too. Only downside was they had limited selection of seafood to choose compared to other places (eg no scallop, mussels, and their oysters are sold out) Will visit again if they had more selection.
Flavour wise is tad bland but still good with some sauces.
Ordered through Delivereasy. A bit more upmarket than your usual f&c shop but it is a bit more fancy too. Originally got delivered the wrong order but they got me my one in the end. The squid, chips and panko fish burger were all great. The curly fries are exceptionally yum. Food quality was decent for delivered f&c, which usually don't travel well
Their hand cut fries were the BEST fries we've ever had! HIGHLY recommend!
I recommend taking your food to go and taking it to pier or nearby park.
Service was excellent and he recommended what to get based on like and interest.
Food a little greasy and lacking in seasoning, service took a while (expected since was busy) and a little on the expensive side but overall nice experience. Got halloumi burger and onion rings. Staff so much fun & lively. Xtra points for playing zella day 😝
I ate here while visiting from the USA around Christmas 2017. I've been looking forward to eating here again for almost five years and finally made it back. It is every bit as good as I remembered! Best fish & chips I've ever eaten.
It's a fish & chips shop. The food is hot and freshly made. Who cares about "atmosphere"?
Fish and chips here are great! The classic cheeseburger was really delicious. I'd be coming back to try other menu. The place is busy when I came in the evening so be ready to wait. The price is around 7-14nzd for fish and 6-8 for chips. But it's all worth it.
Really good fish and chips and even some vegan options.
Even discovered some new music - Tahini Bikini. Find them on bandcamp.
Went to the beach with their onion rings and fries and WOOOWEE! Felt like I was in a movie. Service was top notch and everyone was friendly.
Very good fish and chips, a wide range of fresh fish to choose from, cooked whichever way you prefer. You also have different chip choices including hand cut, which is not as common as it should be in NZ. They also make there own sauces which are good. The only downsides for me were that the hand cut chips, while well cooked were just too fat, practically a quarter potato in some cases, a bit smaller and crisper would be better, but that's personal preference I guess, the other thing is it is a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.
Excellent Fish n Chip shop with options of fish, cooking style, sides and sauce. The agria chips are exceptional.
Beautiful fish and perfect coating. The ciabatta Was very nice and the veg was flavourful with the little kimchi kick. Will definitely go back next time we're in Wellington.
Great chips with gravy and delicious snapper. I think having proper plates for dine in would help presentation and the environment too. Wooden cutlery and cardboard boxes are great but still unnecessary when dining in.
Sometimes staff are not really friendly but i don’t care about it their fish and chips are so yummy!
I like beer buttered fries more than handcut one.
Little bit expensive however you will get big meals.
