I took my team here for lunch today and we were pretty happy campers!
They ordered fish and chips, the burgers, steak, the vego pasta and I got the beetroot walnut salad.
No complaints at all from the team, and they accommodated a few swaps easily and pleasantly.
My salad was tangy and fresh however I am not sure I could find a single walnut lol. The carpaccio style beetroot was super good though so I forgive them.
After working on assignments a group of friends walked in after a quick drink and some decent food and were surprised by how good the service, food and atmosphere was. It's a bit on the pricey side of the block but it is in a lovely location beneath the huge Majestic building as well as next to the newly renovated Boulcott Suites and surrounding Willis Street buzziness. I highly recommend on a casual Wednesday or Thursday night for either a date night or an outing with friends.
Cute little historic pub on a bustling street - with an ok burger. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't awful either. Maybe needed a bit more cheese.
My first visit to Wellington Since 1975 for the week The GP won Hands down I had the Duck It was Excellent My 3 other companions Fish, Duck.and Salad Kiwi Duck German Beer, French Waitress OOh laLa Such a Great Atmosphere at a Very Reasonable Price. Would Dine with you Again Thank you Rating you 10+
Adorable little hole in the wall. A beautiful pub built into an old house, it has a modern inside but still with quite a bit of character. The staff are very friendly and the food was absolutely delicious. I had a braised lamb dish, which was perfectly cooked and had marvelous flavours. The wines and beers were also great quality. Overall an excellent casual dining experience.
Me and 5 others came here around 8pm tonight. They seated us in a nice table by the window and the customer service was so delightful! Everyone was super friendly and all the food came out at the same time.
I wouldn't rate this above 3.5 as the food options were very small. There were a lot more alcohol options and finger foods but we didn't know it was that kind of place before going. The food that we did order were good, but nothing id be dieing to come back for. I enjoyed my pasta (I did have to ask if they could add chicken into it it though - and I'm happy I did) but it was nothing special.
I would return in the future, but probably for different reasons. This place would be a great spot to sit outside of with some beer and finger food!
I went to GP more than 5 times and I like the atmosphere there as I go right after work. My favourite are the burger and fish and chips. They have decent range of beers too.
Went here for lunch with my partner as it looked nice and had tables free outside. The waitress greeted us and gave us menus and water. She was really friendly the whole time.
We ordered off their small plates menu and got the arrancini balls, a side salad and the cheesy garlic bread. All of which was delicious!
I recommend coming here for good fast service and excellent food :)
I really enjoyed my time there. For several reasons, först of all the location is ideal and the 1st floor gives you a view on willis street which is quite nice when you just want to look at people passing by. Second of all the staff is really friendly and dedicated, I didn't get much time there (40min) and they brought me my plate really fast after ordering. And it was actually quite tasty ! Poached pear and pork belly salad, can't go wrong with that. Prices are quite decent, plates are generous and there is a lot to chose from.
This place was absolutely buzzing. With $10 jugs on offer, the place is packed with backpackers and students. Came in for a few coldies and decided to have some finger food. The salt and pepper calamari was extremely salty but complemented the beer perfectly. Probably wouldn't have it on its own though.
This place was buzzing! We went on a Wednesday midday for lunch and half the place was already reserved. You might need to book in advance if you want a good seat. We sat outside in the heated conservatory which was lovely. We had a view out onto the road and could watch people come and go.
Our waitress was incredibly helpful and friendly.
Michael tried their speciality burger with the suggested beer pairing. The burger was delicious and he liked his Red Zep beer by the Garage Project. I had a chicken, bacon and mushroom pie with smoky mash and a raspberry and lemon Six Barrel Soda. I loved my pie and my mash. It was filling and delicious. The pastry was flakey and buttery and the mash was fantastic.
Unfortunately we were served everything on a huge chunk of wood. I would have preferred a plate and I'm sure the waitress would have too as the wood was very heavy.
Otherwise the place was great. Good food, good atmosphere and overall a great place for a meal.

Value and delicious. Had dinner there. Fantastic standard. You can also get a burger and 1 litre of beer for $20 nzd. the salted caramel peanut butter tart was amazing.
Great place to eat drink and hang out. Excellent range of local beers. I had the fush and chups which were cooked to perfection.
We've stopped for drinks at the General Practitioner on several visits to Wellington, it's a lovely old building with several different areas to sit. This time we were outside in a covered in verandah overlooking the street, great for people watching. Inside, there are displays of various old, and sometimes fearsome-looking medical instruments. There is a great relaxed feel about the place, the staff are very friendly and they offer a 7-9pm happy hour, perfect for a nightcap before heading back to the hotel.
I must admit I have never been to the General Practioner since it had been conceived, and to be honest I was residing in London half that time. All I can remember was this use to be Bouquet Garni, which once served some of Wellington's bests foods.
There are seating both indoors and outside overlooking Boulcott and Willis Street. We decided to sit outside to enjoy the sun and fresh air.
Unfortunately Mr Wasabi was in a rush as he had a meeting which he failed to tell me, so we had to rush our lunch.
Our meals came out fairly quickly as we had informed the staff that we needed our meals quickly.
Service was prompt and friendly. How ever I did not appreciate that Mr Wasabi's dish arrived earlier and he managed to finish it before my dish had even arrived. I had sneaky suspicion that the chef thought the dishes ordered were for one person, an entree and a main. Our waiter kept saying that my dish would arrive soon, but it did not.

Great food, great service, reasonable prices. Went for the waitress' suggestion of a selection of starters. Brilliant idea, lots of different tastes and still allowed room for a yummy dessert. Drank a really lovely cider and sat out on the veranda in the cool and people watched while we dined. All in all a really great evening. Would happily go back and would definitely recommend.
A nice classy pub atmosphere with a good selection of beers. The food that I've had has also been excellent. But my favourite thing about this place is the deals that they have. Usually something on every day. Fish and chips and a beer for $18 on a Friday - bargain!
Great place, it's always hard to get a table! Good staff, quick service, friendly atmosphere and isn't snobby which is great! Love coming here for drinks
Looked for a nice place near our hotel last evening - and we found The GP! Nice ambience, really delicious food and fantastic service... Everything was cooked to perfection - steak exactly how it was ordered and the lamb rump was perfect!! Everything was outstanding...
Thanks guys - made our last evening in Welly memorable...
5 stars
General Practitioner is iconic Wellington bar and a must-visit for everyone :) try their great hot chips with ayoli and grab a 10$ happy hour jug of beer or cider. Location is another positive thing about this bar - no need to drive anywhere :)
Love the deck upstairs looking out over Willis street foot traffic.
Really yummy fries and aioli and big jugs of beer equals happy me.
Very good food, beautifully prepared with fresh ingredients. And a convivial atmosphere with attentive staff. It all dove tails rather nicely with a supreme CDB setting in a notable period building with a generous outside deck.
We dined at The General Practitioner for the first time in a couple of years and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. I was really impressed with the spring lamb tenderloin dish which was beautifully presented on tiny pieces of potato, olive, green bean and sundried tomato chunks with tzatziki. The combination of flavours was out of this world! My partner enjoyed a medium rare char grilled rib eye steak with chips and café de paris butter. Our service was extremely quick, which was convenient as we were on our way to a show but would have made us feel time pressured otherwise. The architecture inside this building is spectacular. We were sitting outside in an extension of the main building which got very noisy (and cold), even with the awnings up. The close proximity of the tables and chairs shows just how popular this restaurant is in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Overall, this was a very pleasant meal.
Have been to The GP now several times and have consistently found the food to be really creative and yummy. Really good wholesome food. When I recently had some salmon that I personally wanted cooked a little more - nothing was a problem and they cleverly cooked and created it all again as if I hadn't touched it. Staff are very approachable and hospitable. Would definitely recommend - especially for week day lunch treat.
Really nice dining and a fantastic beer selection to match, it was so nice to find a place like this on my walk home
We were 30mins late to our booking but they still had our table which was great. Great service, best I have seen anywhere in while. Food was fantastic, perfect serving size, we ordered garlic bread, main and dessert but didn't really need the garlic bread as the sizing of the meals was great Definitely would go again and highly recommend.
Great little place, hidden away from the main drag.
Had dinner here with some out of town work colleagues, and boy what a meal! Will be back for sure!
Service was sharp, food arrived promptly and was excellent! Good selection of beers and wines.
What more do you want? Five out of five.
I attended a Christmas function here and was delighted by the unusual interiors (medical cabinet sculptural piece) and the food was wonderful.
The portions were a bit on the small side for the mains, however they were quite flavorful and well thought-out.
Staff could be a bit more attentive, as I ran out of water frequently during the meal.
One of my favourite places to eat in Wellington. Food is delicious, menu changes regularly, lovely atmosphere. Its fancy and great for a special evening but not pretentious at all. Prices are also very very good considering the high quality of the food and service. Dine there regularly and would highly recommend going there for dinner.
We went there on a Tuesday for dinner with a friend and were absolutely delighted. The staff was very friendly and attentive, the menu offered great choices and the food was excellent. (Very clean, modern washrooms too). We will definitely eat there again.
Good pub grub lunch in a good location and with good service. If you're after value, friendly staff, reliable food at a reasonable price, then this is a good choice. The wine list is average in choice and quality, but priced just a bit above average.
Great place for after work drinks. There's good deals on 1.8 litre jugs from 7 pm ($10 jugs of Monteith's). The food is also good, although most people seem to clear out before dinner. The burger is particularly tasty.
Great place to come for a beer or wine. They offer a fine dinning dinner service upstairs, however I haven't tried this. Very popular with the after work crowd, so can be difficult to find a table.
Great caffe and restaurant with classic GP themed inner decorations, both open and closed terraces. Food is great, staff is super friendly and your dog is also welcome there! The island of peace with delicious food and great drinks!
Great atmosphere, and decent service. Food was decent but didn't blow my mind. Great if you want to have a couple of quiets after work in a great envionment
Nice pub, it's a great place to have some afternoon chips and a beer.
I wouldn't go for dinner but was a General practitioner of attending an afternoon beer after playing paintball at Paintball Corp down the road before they moved.
Interesting location. Lots of different places to sit. Good food. Reasonable selection of beer. Craft beer mostly in bottles. Good service.
Withwin walking distance from CBD, and our hotel at the Mercure Inn. Awesome service, great atmosphere and it seems Friday night's always busy. Enjoyed a delicious steak and good wine. Visiting from Auckland and we will be back! Highly recommended.
Just finished evening meal, nothing short of first class.friday night a bit crowed but Saturday ideal. Very classy meal at a competive price, beats any in close proximity.
Nice place for a drink and a meal.
Very tasty steak, portion reflected on the price, quite fair. Good atmosphere, services, great location.
Good beer and wine selection. Food in this case was OK, and the waitress had a bad case of the sour face.
great happy hour jugs, amazing service, friendly staff. Devine food. just amazeballs in general.
Wellington institution. Good choice of beer. Sunny seating outside. Decent bar food and friendly staff
The staff are just fantastic here. Great location for it to be a local where friends can meet any day of the week :)
Lovely historic building, great food and drink. Nice outdoor area.
Excellent service! Meal was tasty and nice atmosphere. Will come again when in Wellington.
