I've forgotten how great kk is. I used to live in Wellington and I've always enjoyed kk. You do have to book ahead as its a small restaurant that can't accommodate too many tables.
After 5 years away from Wellington, I've brought my friend to visit Wellington. Out of all the places we've visited, kk's mee goreng was the best dish for him. Kk has stood the test of time. I highly recommend kk. They still have really good portion size too!
A friend of mine suggested going here and by the end of the night, I was so glad we chose KK.
The food is delicious, affordable and portions are generous! Friendly staff who didn't ask us to leave, even though we sat there for quite a while after we were finished eating.
We ordered the Deep Fried Tofu, Roti Chanai and Char Kuey Teow (a total of $30) and shared it amongst the three of us. We were too full to order some more but definitely going back soon! 👍🏼❤️
I have been to KK Malaysia many times before with my friend, absolutely love the place. My favourites are the Curry Laksa, Roti Channai and especially the Beef Nasi Lemak. Good service and the food comes out quickly. No other Malaysian Restaurants come close to matching the authenticity and flavours. The Beef Nasi Lemak is my all time favourite at the moment, although since it's quite rich food, you may be spending all afternoon in the toilet, LOL
Amazing food and fast service. Definitely a place I will visit again. The beef rendang was a perfect blend of taste and spice and the beef was tender, a nice touch with the rice in a box. Excellent service as I was taking away and it only took them around 5-7 minutes. 🙌🙌🙌👍👍👍
Was already hungry so, just enter straight away, serve my Chinese.
They are kids-friendly restaurant. I saw them cleaning the high chair before letting my son to sit, who is 8 months old. We had curry laksa and seafood laksa. It’s the taste we expected. Really good.
Love this place! Very very cheap and great service from the employees and I can't forget how good the food is. Awesome place for a nice wee date night! Be aware, it is a small venue but very warming!
這是我們第一次來KK 餐點非常的道地
我們點了 Seafood Laksa, Nasi Lemak and Spring Rolls
Laksa
Great taste - the food came out within 2 mins = everything is prepared beforehand. Had a huge cup of water and refilled it twice. Used a fork
It was my first time to try chicken and beef rendang and I fell in love with it. The serving is okay and the food is quite cheap. It can get busy sometimes specially during dinner time.
An oldie but a goodie. Visited this Wellington institution this evening for the first time in 8 years! Still as good as I remember. We share a myriad of dishes and cost for plate is super great. The roti chennai with the chicken curry is worth mentioning. Very generous serves, lovely staff, quick turnaround time. See you next time.
Always my first choice for Malaysian Stir fried noodle 🍜 or steam chicken with rice.
Good food 🥘, quick service (it takes approx. 5-8 mins) and nice portion.
I recommend to try out stir fried noodle or rice. Both are yummy 😋.
Found this hidden gem in Wellington. Dishes are decently sized and decently priced, ranging from $12-$13 a dish. Ordered the seafood laksa and Po chicken, both of which were delicious. Friends ordered the nasi lemak, which were also amazing. Must check out!
Staff were very welcoming on arrival and provided great service throughout the time there. Only flaw was food came out so quick I received my main before my starter.
Ordered the fish curry for takeaway.
The portion was really small . The curry tasted alright the fish was okay too.
Was really worried after reading the rest of the reviews but I guess the food wasn't too bad.
This place is busy because it offers good Malaysian dishes at a reasonable price. If you want to have attentive service from staff go somewhere you can pay more. The dishes I tried were great. Curry laksa could be the best in town. Very busy means you will need to book a table if you don't want to wait outside.
Great food at affordable price! Good service with not much waiting time at all. Highly recommended! 😊 Spaces are limited, so booking is recommended.
Just got a takeaway as it was really busy. Got a fish curry and rice which was absolutely delicious. Was surprised how good it was. Not 5/5 as there a layer of oil on top which seemed a bit unnecessary. Would definitely get again!
I went to KK Malaysia for dinner with a friend. As usual, the place was super crowded, not helped by the fact that the restaurant itself doesn't have much real estate. The good thing is that they accept reservations, and I'd definitely recommend doing that.
We ordered a seafood laksa and a curry laksa. Both were the same except for the addition of prawns and mussels to the former. The portion was big, and they were really generous with the ingredients. As someone who has tasted laksa in Malaysia, I must say this was really authentic. It looked spicier than it tasted (which was great news), and I was really pleasantly surprised by the aromatic broth and the overall flavor of the dish.
On a previous occasion, I also had the Hainanese chicken rice, and although there isn't anything to complain about, I feel that I would recommend the laksa more.
Showstopper: Good portions and authentic flavour.
Overall grade: B
Discovered this restaurant on the last day of our stay in wellington. Food was fantastic. I had the laksa and it was really good. Will go back to this restaurant if I am back in wellington.
Have a soft spot for this place having spent many lunches moping around here.
The Mee Goreng and Char Kway Teow being my regulars. It's very cozy place where you can pick out regular devotees.
This is where the Search for the Best Laksa in Wellington continues. After my partner's elective in Singapore (which apparently boasts the best laksa that he has ever tasted), we have hunted high and low for something on equal par. In Dunedin, KL Aroma has a legitimately good laksa, but since our shift to Wellington, we have been searching for something a wee bit closer to home.
So far, my partner's tried a few around the city and he's been fairly happy with the results. KK's got a bit of a reputation for authentic cuisine and we've been trying to get a table, but unfortunately KK is closed on Sundays, which is the day that we're both free for lunch. Come Monday post-Toast Martinborough and we realise that KK is open and so we leap upon the chance.
We arrive and within five minutes of sitting down, we've already ordered. Service is no slouch and it wasn't that we were rushed - it was simply because the waitress had picked up very quickly that we had decided on our dishes.
We ordered:
- seafood laksa: this was definitely one of the higher quality laksas that we have ordered. The noodles were the fresh egg noodles that have that delicious texture to them and it went beautifully with the spicy laksa soup. Some places have a more coconut flavour to the soup, KK has gone for the more spice end of the spectrum. We could taste the curry leaves and I think there was even a hint of cinnamon. This was fantastic - mild enough for us to drink it happily, but with a bit of a kick. There was also plenty of surimi, fish balls and fried tofu. The prawns were plump and well seasoned. My only gripe is that there was only one mussel in the whole dish, but hey - the quality and quantity of the rest of the ingredients made up for it.
- char kuey teow: The noodles had a lovely crispy bite to them and they definitely did not skimp on the fillings. There was plenty of chicken, fishcake and shrimp. We ordered this dish with medium spice, which was on the mild side. But I didn't really mind because I was really ordering the medium spice so as not to look like an absolute fool in front of my fellow countrymen. This dish wasn't overwhelmingly greasy, as often it can be and I appreciated that.
So does KK Malaysian Restaurant go on the list for the Best Laksa in Wellington? Definitely. The table over from us got some deliciously crisp looking roti chanai, so I know what I want the next time we come here.
I regularly come here for the fried Hainan chicken served with a fantastic chilli sauce that is made in house. I have tried other dishes like the Sambal and Nasi Lemak which are good but nothing like the chicken. Service is pretty good. But I tend to come earlyer or later is the evening because its difficult to get a table during mid service. I recommend sticking to the Chinese Malaysian dishes like the noodles or ofcorse the Hainan Chicken, instead of the Indian/Malay style food because the chefs are clearly favor one side of Malaysian cuisine over the others. Would still recomend to anyone
Yum yum yum!! Great service super quick with the meals super super cheap for what you get!! Everything has lots of flavor roti chani is amazing!!
Very good dinner place.
In my Experience:
Positive:
-Fast service.
-Very good and tasty food.
-Reasonable prices.
-Good location.
-Variety of dishes.
Negative:
-It is not very big so without a booking you could have to wait.
I go quite often, I really like this place.
Good cheap Asian eat! Got the roti chanai takeaway. Such a good price - only $9! Very generous with the amount of roti. Would prefer less roti and bit more of actual dish. Overall delicious and would buy again!
In terms of cheap and cheerful this place is peerless and so has a great following including more than one MP. Not at all flashy but fast, tasty food over a long time means this place is usually busy and for good reason.
Great little place on busting street. We walked in without booking on a Monday night, the place already full. But we were able to be seated after a short wait.
The food came out very quickly, looking delicious!! The food taste as good as they looked. Very good price too! Would love to return again and again...
KK Malaysian never disappoints! A tiny place just off Cuba St in Wellington, KK has been a local favourite for years and is definitely one of my personal favourites too. Divine Nasi Lemak, tasty curry laksa, yummy mee goreng... The menu is quite concise but that's something that works in KK's favour: the few dishes they serve, they do very well. Always highly recommended on my book!
Absolutely awesome Me Goreng tonight, was super hungry & it arrived in minutes. Always buzzing, we were lucky to get a table. Kk is the best value for money, huge portions!
Cheap and cheerful. Food always tasty and cooked fast! No frills service and environment but you don't go here for that!
We've been eating here regularly for 6 years
Rated 10/10. Consistent quality of each dish, consistently fast and consistently affordable.
Really good and helpful staff, simple but pleasant decor, clean and tidy.
Thanks KK team. Brilliant.
I ate at KK for the first time a few weeks back. Although the ingredients seemed to lack in quality the food itself (although slightly oily) was tasty and plentiful. The setting inside the restaurant is nothing special but there was a great atmosphere due the abundance of patrons. I ordered the roti chanai and a curry laksa both were delicious. I will certainly return.
I've been coming to KK Malaysia for the past 5 years and I am never disappointed. Last night we had a table of 5 and all of us had a fantastic experience with friendly, accommodating staff and fantastic food.
I particularly recommend this for students since the prices are cheap yet still filling and tasty. The Sweet and Sour Chicken and Kung Po Chicken are my favourites!
For those who have posted negative feedback about this restaurant, I would just like to remind readers/potential diners that KK's has never toted itself as 'fine dining'...What you will receive here is efficient service, excellent food, and at an exceptionally reasonable price. My extended family have been coming here for over 10 years (or ordering takeout) and have never been disappointed. My brothers (who live overseas) always insist on KK's at some point when visiting (and they have both spent alot of time traveling in asian countries, including Malaysia). As a proud Wellingtonian, I will happily always recommend KK's!
Not as good as the one in Ellerslie - but still pretty damn good. Now a regular Wednesday redang
The best Malasyian Take Out in Wellington! I love Malaysian food, and these guys are heroes!
If you don't know Malasyian food, this is the place to go and try it out. The starters menu gives you some great options to taste. And the mains are delicious and superb value. I don't suggest you go here once. I suggest you go here until you have tried out at least half the menu.
This has to be the best malaysian restaurant in Wellington. The food are delicious and prices are more than reasonable. My all time favourite is the seafood curry laksa, must try! Portion size generous for the price. Quick and friendly service.
Largest-sized portions for the lowest price you'll find at a Malaysian restaurant in Wellington. Probably second best taste wise too.
I've eaten the Mee Goreng over twenty times this year. Once I even waited 15 minutes for a table without complaining.
I wish more tables for this business.
But, what's in that Mee Goreng? It's divine.
I agree with Matthew B. ... I'll take the great food served fast in a simple environment anyday ... and any place that you have to reserve a table to guarantee a spot for a weekday lunch must be doing it right.
Amazing food, super fast service, large quantities and super cheap. I have been going there for over a decade now and it is always amazing, so much so that we drive an hour to go there sometimes. I find it frustrating to read reviews of people claiming that it needs re-furbishment etc and complaining about things which may matter if you were paying twice the price and expect fancy surroundings over amazing food at a stupid cheap price!
You cannot beat the curried fish. Its my favourite place and for the curried fish alone they deserve five stars...always the same AND no taking out a loan to pay for it! How do you do it KK. The staff a pretty friendly for a busy take-out cheap and cheerful cafe. You get what you pay for but in this instance so much more
Excellent, service is usually good. Can be a bit patchy on busy/rainy nights when every decides to get takeaways.
The pricing is excellent, very cheap and very large takeaway portions.
Eating in is good too. Can get a table most nights, or reserve one if in larger groups.
Their Kungpo beef/chicken, chicken wings, rendang and sambal are my favourites. I go back most weeks now
Great value for money no doubt! I usually take the nasi goreng and it's the best I've ever had (tried quite a few though!...). Quantity is huge (usually does me 2 meals). It's quick, it's authentic, it's delicious and it's dead cheap!
Obviously if you're after a romantic candel light style dinner, it's not the place, but if you're after a good and quick meal, then indulge!
The best restaurant! Food is absolutely amazing! I recommend the Kung po chicken above anything else!!! You will regret getting anything else after a taste of that!
Great food and great prices, if I was to nitpick I guess it would be better if there was more space but I'm happy to take out when the food is this well done
Best quick and cheap Malaysian! Kung Po beef is the stand out dish. No, service isn't a priority but I have always found staff pleasant.
I have been to Malaysia and I often eat at Malaysian restaurants, but KK Malaysia is the best in Wellington. Despite the cheap prices, the food is excellent and authentic. It is much better than it's counterparts, however you must get in quick as it is always busy. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
Great value for money. The portions are large, but doesn't compromise on flavour. Some have reviewed this place as making the 'same old Malaysian food', but I have eaten at a few other places around town and they aren't as good or cheap.
The dining area is a bit cramped, but still clean and well presented. Takeaways are ready very quickly as well.
Definitely a favourite.
Love the laksa there and is good value :)
Their menu is pretty standard, but definitely affordable and well worth what you are paying for! Service is usually pretty quick, even during peak time. The food is pretty good, and whenever we order our food hot, it comes out REALLY HOT; just the way we like it! Try out the Hainanese Chicken rice with the awesome hot chili sauce. Kung Pou chicken rice, and hokkien mee are some of our favs as well. However, it gets pretty packed up on weekends, so make sure to make reservations.
This is the most delicious place I have ever eaten at in my life. I am a total addict and always get Mee Goreng! Was introduced by a friend nearly 10 years ago and have introduced a lot more! KK you are the best!!
i love this place.
very small, but comfortable. affordable, and amazing quality for what you pay, the laksa especially is delicious. fully recommend this place!
Best malaysian restaurant in Welly so far. I particularly like the Hainanese Chicken Rice and Curry Laksa. I am one of the happy customer!
KK easily beats any restaurants in Welly that carry the name 'Satay'.
We didn't know this restaurant as we are not local. Just hop in while on the business trip with colleagues (one of us was a Malaysian). Food was excellent and authentic, according to my Malaysian colleague. Even the restaurant was full seated, we didn't need to wait. Very good food and it's cheap!
A firm favourite. I eat here far too often. Everything is delish, extreme value for money and you're eating five minutes after you've ordered. Brilliant.
Excellent food and value, been going there since they open. Best in Wellington
Cheap and cheerful, large portions. I had the spring rolls as starter and sweet and sour chicken and a roti. It was great but too much food. Would recommend.
This is our frequent dining place. the food awesome. very authentic malaysian/chinese food. having lived in malaysia for many years this place is great. their nasi lemak, hainanese chicken rice, fried noodles, kong po chicken - delicious! if u like m'sian food u will love this place. =)
Outstanding. Bloody awesome food and cheap too. This is my favourite restraunt in Wellington.
Totally recommend the seafood laska,
Fast takeaways too.
Great authentic Malay food. Friendly staff. Great menu choice.
Hard to beat.
KK have been dishing up delish Malay food for eons and is our go to spot for good cheap eats. California has Mex, London has Indian but Wellington has Malaysian food.
KK mightn't have the ambience of a high end restaurant, but then it is crazily good value for money. $11 for a Chicken Rendang is typical especially when the chicky rendang is also incredibly tasty.
Cheap eats equals big popularity and seating can be hard to come by at dinner times, 20 - 40 min waits for a table are not unusual, alternatively you can get takeaways....
The chicken here is not halal, but it is moslem-friendly since they don’t have pork in the menu, so we ordered the seafood and vegetarian dishes. The portion is big, but I would like my food to be more spicy. The seating area is not big, and the seating near the door is quite cold.
Curry laksa was good, roti was not bad.
It was a less comfortable visit. Dining space was quite small, it felt cramped with a big group of diners in it. The staff would force-slam the door close whenever someone had entered or left the restaurant as the door closer might be faulty and couldn't shut the door in controlled manner (but it could be closed gently though).
A great first impression! Colleagues and I went here for dinner when we were in Wellington for WoW and given that it is an absolute nightmare to book dinner during the WoW season (we found out the hard way) we had to venture out to the Cuba Street region, which I have no problem doing. We happened upon this restaurant which doesn't look like much but it has the best beef rendang I've had thus far. Busy staff were still very hospitable and friendly. The restaurant doesn't have the best interior or much of a vibe but my meal made up for it. I'm relieved to find out that there's a branch in Auckland so I don't need to wait until my next trip to windy Wellington to have my beef rendang fix from KK Malaysian!
Very tasty food at affordable price . Fantastic and quick service . A must eat if you like Malaysian food
Great spot for a quick, cheap and tasty meal. Service is no frills but is quick and efficient. Always consistently good and satisfying food with generous portions. Highly recommended!
My daughter thinks the food is the best food in the world! The food came extremely fast and they had those yummy mints. The people were very friendly and kind. The food tasted very good, maybe one of the best malaysian restaurants I've ever been to.
Very filling portion, delicious food with very good taste especially their chilli sauce for the hainam chicken rice. The mee hoon is awesomely delicious.. i will go back to KK again next time...
It has been a while since I tasted beautiful picked horse radish, the vegetarian salad here is to die for and the beef skewers with peanut sauce was the most wonderful combination I have eaten in such a long time.
For me a true delight to eat at.
The restaurant closes between 14.00 and 17.00
The prices were great to
Got myself a bowl of curry laksa and fried wonton to be shared with my bf. They taste awesome! The thick curry was flavourful and decent level of spiciness (could have been a little bit spicier for me ^_^ ) . Would definitely come back again and try other dishes as well.
Foods are full of wokhei....very authentic Malaysian food. Kids were surprised at how fast the service is. Happy dinner.
Wellington is spoilt for good Malaysian restaurants and KK is one of the best. Was busy with customers when we visited. A little bit nicer than cheap and cheerful, but only just. Can't fault the quality of food and speed of service. Menu doesn't quite have the range I would have liked and unfortunately my favourite Murtabak was absent.
Got the chicken rendang and there were no vegetables as seen in the photos. It was still delicious though and came out fairly quickly.
The shop was small and my table was right next to the counter, so it's a bit awkward 😳
But food was nice
