Delicious and authentic Mexican food at Viva Mexico!! We had the corn enchiladas with chicken that was topped with a spicy chocolate sauce, delicious! Not like your typical chain Mexican this was authentic and filling yet not heavy like Mexican can be! Margaritas were a must to try!
Partner and I had a weekend getaway in Wellington. With so many dining options on offer, it's hard to pick, but I'm so glad we found Viva Mexico. Whilst we only popped in for a taco and margarita, we loved it so much that we went back for more the following night.
I like that Viva Mexico's food looks, smells and tastes what I imagine to be "authentic" Mexican cuisine. Unlike other Mexican places that add layer upon layer of garnish and "extra bits" to make it look bright and fancy, these tacos were simple, with lots of meat and one or two garnishes that really added to the flavour of the meal.
The rockmelon agua fresca was delicious, and at $4.50 was the more affordable drink option on the menu.
We will definitely be coming back the next time we're in Wellington.
Nice (albeit smallish) mexican main courses, but we usually go mostly for the stuffed jalapenos which are served as a starter - the best in town, absolutely delicious!
Friendly staff and great location, just tucked a little way from the crowds of Cuba Street. The pork tacos are very tasty. I stopped for a light dinner, and the taco really hit the spot. I'll be back for more.
We went to the Petone outlet (no option on zomato to leave a review for that outlet), and we were SO happy we went!!!! The food is just beautiful!! We got the beef and lamb tacos and they tasted so good - loved the guacamole! We also go the churos to share and wish we got the bigger plate of them as we didn’t want them to finish - the caramel sauce that goes with them is so yummy, and it was fantastic they weren’t covered in chocolate (and this is coming from someone who loves chocolate). Will happily recommend this place as it’s worth your money!!
Super tasty tacos and great margaritas. Home-made salsa was a highlight. Everything we had was delicious though, and was even given free churros for when. We return as they had sadly sold out. We will definitely return.
For a start, I was very happy there were a good range of options for vegetarians. The tacos are a little bit small but very tasty with an interesting range of flavours. The music was quite loud but the staff were friendly.
Fabulous time at this joint I had the spinach and feta quesadilla and it was amazing and I found the smaller portion filling! Super quick and lovely service and reasonable pricing.
Good flavors, spicy salsa. Chips and salsa are $15 which is over priced for the 15 chips you actually get. Food came out fast and service was polite.
Closest thing to authentic Mexican food you will get in Welly (for now???). The owners are from Ensenada, Mexico instead of the faraway lands of Whakatane or Timaru. Definitely leans towards food on the northern side / border food, but the soups especially are very good and flavoursome. Also the dudes pop the cap off your jarritos with a lighter from their pocket, so it's true authentic.
I ever knew Viva Mexico had a branch here. Been here six years apparently.
Love the back alley feel to this place. Inside decor is eclectic Mexican and rustic. Felt like we weren't in Wellington.
We opted for the jalapeño starter to share and two veggie tacos each for main.
We ordered only two tacos each as we thought it would be a light meal. It was much larger than we expected.
I loved this meal. It felt authentic (never been to Mexico so can't honestly say) but it wasn't processed or westernised. Great flavours. I enjoyed the refried beans on the side, nice consistency and seasoned well. Generous sized salad.
I asked for some chilli sauce and received a small dish with some chilli salsa which ended up costing me $2, which felt a little cheeky but it wasn't a big deal.
I ordered a corona and my partner a glass of margarita which was lovely.

It's a quite small place with I think just 4 or 5 tables. But, the food is tasty and the price is lower than some other places. Perfect for Friday night since the night market is just outside the restaurant.
Came here with a friend after she recommended it. It was a nice little getaway from the main st. It was great to see just how well thoughtfully and colourfully decorated the whole place was! The food we ordered was the soup and enchiladas which were filling and tasty. I can say whether its authentic Mexican as I've never been to Mexico. However the prices are a bit steep for what they are but lovers of Mexican food should check it out regardless!
Enchilada de queso (veggie version) was delcicous, generously portioned and all round happy food. Jarritos was also a nice not overly sweet addition.
Best meal I've had in a long time. As a vegetarian, it can be difficult finding yummy authentic food to eat, I would highly recommend this place if you are vegetarian (or not as well). The atmosphere is cool, the staff were friendly. The food came out quickly, and the music was nice. Will definitely come back here. The only thing I can fault, is that because the restaurant is small, it can be difficult to get a table. However, this adds to the Mexican street food atmosphere.
Great food. Delicious a lot of flavors. I choose the spinach and cheese quesadilla and also a beef taco. Both amazing, fresh, full of flavors. I highly recommend this place.
Food was better than average against other emerging Mexican restaurants. The chilli rellanos were disappointing. More jalepeno popper, not chilli rellanos. Drinks menu is lacking. Need margarita on the rocks, not just frozen. And need a signature sangria. I would have a much different review if I had a nice jug of sangria along with the enchiladas.
Had read good reviews about this place and went with good expectations! We were quite happy to note that the menu was just right and what we ordered was superb. we ordered a pitcher of frozen maragarita, jalapenos relenos, chilaquiles, quesidillas and enchiladas. The portions were just right and the quality excellent, especially the special sauce served with the food. That was something out of the ordinary. The taste was perfect in spice. Highly recommended.
I simply love the food at Viva Mexico. It isn't a flash restaurant with tiptop service but a lovely little whole in the wall that deserves a visit. It is a great place to hide from the cafe crowd on Cuba Street and get a fab feed.
For starters this visit we shared the Stuffed Jalapeños, they were delicious and gone in seconds.
Often when I eat out I head towards the vegetarian option for mains, never here though. I love the salsa verde and was told by staff a while back that beef is what goes best with it, so that is what I ordered. This visit I had the Huarache , why have I never thought of serving food like this? It was great but huge. I didn't quite finish the whole plate. Mr Muffin enjoyed his food too.
This place is well worth a visit and defiantly on our 'must use the Entertainment Book voucher' list.

Our portion sizes was great and the hot sauce was fantastic albeit burning.
Showstopper: the freshness of the food was refreshing.

I have been a repeat customer for three years now and I will never get tired of eating here 😁 the large chicken quesadilla with beans rice avo and sour cream topped with crispy fresh salad is simply the most beautiful creation I find myself admiring every Tuesday evening!!
I'm from Florida where we have heaps of Mexican restaurants and this is one of the best I've been to. It was really busy and our order got lost in the shuffle, so they comped the meal. The chicken enchiladas with mole sauce and veggie taco were delicious and as authentic as you can get in Florida since they import all the ingredients from Mexico. Great atmosphere and music to top off the experience. Definitely come here if you're craving Mexican in Wellington.

Went here for date night tonight. I am more than a fan of Mexican food and a sucker for authentic cuisine, this food totally met the bar. The service was excellent, the guys are honest and friendly. Ignore the other reviews that critique the portion size and price- the portions are very generous, the hot sauce didn't f**k around (which we loved), and the price was fair.
I will be back after my long runs to eat three breakfast.
My partner and I went here for date night on Friday. Being lovers of Mexican food, we were dying to check it out. The food was fantastic. We had the jalapeños and corn fritters, I had the mole enchiladas, boyfriend had the tacos exotica's with red sauce. Extremely authentic, super fresh and delicious. The red sauce was quite hot for kiwi tongues, but the mole sauce was absolutely amazing- cinnamoney, chocolatey, smooth and amazing. Would definitely go back again

Plates aren't pretty, and there is no need to put a garnish on every individual thing on the plate... But who cares! This is some lovely food. Chicken with Mole and Beef with the Green Tomatillo sauce. Generous servings for cheap money... Service exceptionale

I used to pass this restaurant almost everyday but never had a chance to visit this so "lively place"...Happening place with soothing music, decor with pure mexican taste and the complete feel of mexico. As soon as you enter you reach into a different world. Staff is very much friendly and fun loving. Though, they have limited seating capacity and maximum occupied but can get place to sit after few minutes of waiting
Only after reading reviews on Zomato, I tried this place one day and ordered Jalapenos Rellenos ($12) and Tacos with veggie mix ($8). Presentation was fantastic and so was the taste.
OMG Jalapenos Rellenos was to die for. If you visit there do not miss on this. It had Jalapenos stuffed with cheese served with salad, pickled onion, sour cream and red sauce. Still drooling!!

Always good all the time. Everything my friends or I have tried on the menu has never disappointed. We keep going back to the salads, tacos, and jalapeños rellenos. For after dinner you can't go past the brownie and Mexican coffee.

An outstandingly authentic feeling Mexican experience. It's at the deepest darkest end of Left bank which means dining amongst the pigeons if you choose to sit outside. However the bright decor and colourful staff lift it out of the darkness. Food is generously portioned and flavourful. A lunch icon for a reason.
I had heard about Viva Mexico from a few friends and finally tried it out a few days ago. Absolutely loved the atmosphere, the food and the service was impeccable. The place was packed the whole time I was there and you can see why by how good the food is. I will definitely be back soon!
I dined here on my own recently when the weather and traffic leaving the city were horrible. it was a Tuesday early evening and the place was full. There are probably only 6 or 7 tables in this small establishment - which gives it an intimate feel. The two gentlemen working were both Mexican, and very friendly. I ordered several dishes - so as to make it worth their while - since I was alone and occupying a valuable table. There wass no wine sold here so I settled for a margarita. It was good and traditional. All of the food was as well. A bit pricy - like all Mexican places in NZ - but definitely well worth it. I had tacos, quesadillas, and stuffed jalepenos. Nice fresh food cooked onsite. I will be back.
Tucked somewhere inside the left bank building, this tiny little Mexican joint is a great hidden gem. They have a lot of options to choose from, a nice variety.
The food has a lot of flavors and it satisfied my Mexican craving. A bit pricey for the serving size though.
No better place in NZ for tacos!! For your $ you get a good portion. I Love that it is made by Mexicans! The taste and flavours are authentic much like the restraunt itself x

Every part of this eatery screams homemade authenticity. It's bare-bones decor except for a Mexican flag and a collection of brightly hued, and somewhat intimidating murals on the wall and on the tables.
Love this tiny, tiny delight. The staff are always fantastic and the food seems to be much more "authentic" than other Mexican places I have visited.
Recommend the stuffed and deep fried jalapenos - my mouth is watering thinking about them!
My nephew is a big fan of Mexican food, so inevitably I found myself at Viva Mexico. Having now sampled most of the Mexican restaurants in Wellington, Viva Mexico remains my favourite - it just feels more authentic and less "gimmicky" than many of the others in the genre. Viva Mexico has become a bit of a ritual, and generally forms part of a lunch-time wander up to Cuba Street in the sunshine. The fish tacos are a must-try, and I'm reliably informed that the quesadilla is the *shizzle*. I had ceviche (which isn't usually a menu item) when I was there last week - and LOVED it. They also stock Mexican cola (Jarrito), which I'll admit to developing a bit of a (ridiculous!?) penchant for. Viva Mexico has a great, grass-roots, grungey feel to it, and that's helped it wiggle its way into my heart as a firm favourite. Only (minor) downside? They don't take credit cards.
It has been a while since I last visited this casual eatery. And I must say the food there is fairly authentic. None of this 'burrito' business here.
One thing to note, is that when they say 'spicy' it definitively is NOT Mexican spicy but more catered to the local taste bud.
Ordered a selection of mixed Tacos which were fairly large. I think two would have been more than sufficient for lunch.

Best Mexican in town boys and girls!
I have been multiple times and every time I go back to the enchiladas with cheese sauce I am made. The filling is decent (I am not bothered one bit that I can only choose one meat and one sauce as it clearly says it on the menu by the way) and I really love the smoky flavour of the sauce and there is heaps of sauce! I particularly enjoyed the enthusiasm of the lad who recommended which Mexican beer I should have with my meal. Big ups to him and the team - my stomach left the restaurant happy. Will see you guys again soon!
Go here often and always find the place to be great. Food is always nice and the guys who work there are always friendly.

Have taken a number of other people along and no one has had a bad thing to say about the place.
Over the last year, the cooking has been up and down. But the last few times, we've noticed a marked and consistent improvement of food and presentation. Today, I had something simple, two tacos: chorizo and chicken. The sauce was on the side, so the tortilla was not drowning and falling apart. The meat was nicely seasoned, and the black beans were delicious. The tortillas have changed a little, too. Now they are lightly fried so it holds shape better, but is still flexible and does not shatter. sooo good.
I really love this place! I taught English in Mexico years ago and this is the closest I've found to authentic Mexican food so far in New Zealand. It's simple, honest and jam packed full of flavour.
The food here is good, however, the prices have been slowly rising and what used to be great value for money is not so much any more.
Good Mexican beers, my wife asked for a margarita and was scorned at, they said "that's not a Mexican drink, only tourists drink that in Mexico" very arrogant. It's off the beaten track in a grimey part of the city, it's a tiny place, yes the food is good but come on guys? You had everything perfect before why do you put the prices up so much??

I was never much of a "foodie" in the past, and previously would never have even Tried Mexican food - but I absolutely LOVE and Adore Viva Mexico! The Food is heavenly, the Coffee is a experience in its own, and their desserts (Especially now their doing Churros - which are mouthwateringly good).
I would recommend Viva Mexico to anyone and Everyone who wants to try something new or want a nice change from their "usual".
The pricing is reasonable, services are a great size, and the general feel of the place is just fantastic!
A great place to experience authentic Mexican food! All the food is delicious but totally recommend La sopa de tortilla, the tortilla soup! It's quite addictive! So yummy! I took my Spanish students with me and they were able to practice some Spanish there since they are Mexicans! Good fun!
Very tasty! Definitely recommend eating in rather than taking away though. Take aways tends to be a real mess which is always disappointing when you get home and have had the wrong orders before and not realized until I was home. Over all the food is really good, the staff are friendly and the restaurant is small but cute.
I love viva Mexico, so nice to have cheapish, fast, tasty food that's different from the usual Indian, Asian etc. I have enjoyed everything so far except found the enchiladas with the black sauce (chocolate) a bit too rich. My favourite is pork exoticas taco, the corn chip soup and churros for desert. I have taken a few friends here over the past month and they have all loved it. If I wasn't living on student wages I would be here every night!

It's hard to find an authentic Mexican meal in New Zealand - but Viva Mexico gets very close. It's definitely not gourmet, but Mexican is supposed to be cheap and cheerful.

Went last night for the first time. There was a wait for about 5 minutes for a table, and we were initially seated outside. A hot water bottle was brought out for the child in our group. We ordered, then were offered a table inside when one came up.
We had the Jalapeño Rollenios, which were so excellent we ordered another 2 rounds. I had the tortilla soup, which was incredible with a bit of heat, but such a great combination of flavours, and textures. Then I had a chicken taco, which was simple, authentic, and just delicious. My dining companions had enchiladas, and a pulled pork torta (sandwich) all of which the thoroughly enjoyed. The place was humming, and service was friendly and efficient, we were not made to feel hurried, it was just a great experience. Will definitely be back... Still dreaming about those Rollenios...
Vegetarian quesadillas are so good here, a great addition to Wellington's diverse and cultured eating places. Will come back to try the other Mexican dishes. Not sure if the hot chocolate stand in the friday markets next door is also a part of this house? both are good nonetheless

Just had lunch here. So good. Awesome, awesome food. Loving the Mexican colas. Nice touch. The fish tacos and enchilada are my favorite.
I personally think this is not only the best Mexican food in Wellington, but also all of New Zealand, and also pretty much the best food of any kind I've ever eaten. I would happily eat this food for every meal, every day, for the rest of my life. Nothing disappoints.
However, if you are an Old El Paso Tex Mex fan, you will be disappointed, because this is authentic Mexican food, not filled with sugar and other rubbish. I've seen some reviews say it is too "simple" - all the great chefs in the world will agree that simple with high quality ingredients and cooked to perfection is key. This isn't the kind of food that needs covering in salsa, cheese and sour cream and all that other gunk. It is simply devine. Worth moving to Wellington for!

My all-time favourite lunchtime/dinner (quick and easy) stopovers! Easily, one of Wellington's best hidden cheap-eats. Food is amazing, and delicious, quick and hot!
Antonio is amazing, and the wait-staff are super friendly - always willing to help one practice their espanol (which is always appreciated).
Note: Sometimes you might need to be patient and wait for a table, or settle for outside, but I truly believe their food is well worth it.

I grew up in California and one thing I miss since living in Wellington, is some good Mexican food. Tried the other places around, Flying Burrito B it's horrible & not Mexican at all, Boca Loca is expensive and lacks flavor, etc. Finally the treasure was found! My friends recommended Viva Mexico, & voila, I felt almost at home the moment I walked in. All guys working are super nice & the smells coming out the kitchen were so authentic. The food was DELICIOUS!!!!!! The Mole is soooooo good, no other place has a Mole like this little Taqueria. My friend ordered a meat quesadilla, stuffed with tons of meat and cheese, wow! My mother went for the fish tacos & she loved them. Loved the Mexican drinks, Jarrito :-) Thank you guys for making feel at home, I'm so glad to have found a real Mexican place after traveling to Lower Hutt & back looking for the real thing.
My favourite restaurant in Wellington by far.
The staff have always been pleasant, even though the restaurant is always full to capacity. The food is amazing, the only REAL Mexican food you'll get in town. I have always found the portions to be huge, more than fair for what you pay - certainly more than I can eat and that is saying something.
I try not to have the same thing twice coming here, and have never been disappointed, even if I just order the first thing I see, it is always cooked beautifully. I'd recommend trying your meal with one of the Mexican beers available, as they are also wonderful.
One of my favourite things is the dessert - an extremely dense chocolate brownie served with cream, ice cream, apple slices and cinammon. Absolutely divine, the Mexicans discovered chocolate and obviously still know how to make the most of it
Best Mexican in Wellington, by far. Everything on the menu is wonderful- try the stuffed jalapenos, they're my fave. Each main comes with a side salad, spiced rice and a serving of refreid black beans that taste so good I kind of wish I could just order a tub of them and call it a night. I love being able to mix and match sauces and fillings; try the spicy chocolate mole sauce and the chorizo, they go great together.
Not only that, but its ridiculously cheap and the decor is cute and kitchy.
Come on Friday when the night market is on- you can follow up your meal with a spiced mexican hot chocolate and some hXe people watching.

Been three times and had excellent food and wonderful service. I generally prefer "more expensive" places for dinner but this gem is too good to pass up, really cute decor and great range of food :)
I am appalled by Arthur's review it sounds as though he was in a bad mood before he even walked through the door. Viva Mexico is an excellent place to relax and eat some authentic Mexican food. The chefs are obviously native to Mexico which adds to the already fantastic experience. The pulled pork with anchote was to die for and i order on the recommendation of the waiter.

This little restaurant is amazing, delicious and cheap. The staff are awesome and they sell Mexican beer too. I love the way it's hidden away down strange old leftbank because it makes it feel like you are in a much more exotic locale for a while.
This restaurant is amazing. The queso sauce and the green sauce are as good as anything you would get in Texas/Mexico/San Diego. So delicious. Also, so great to be able to get jalapeno poppers in Wellington. It's wise to call in advance - sometimes they shut on a Saturday night without warning and I've been disappointed. I also wish they would get a couple of extra outdoor tables - the wait can be long on a Friday evening. Get the enchiladas with queso sauce and you won't be disappointed!

The outside looks a bit dated/out of the way. But don't let that stop you. At first I didn't even know it was there. But when searching for the Argentinian place near it, this took my fancy.

We had a voucher for this place so randomly tried it. It was amazing and we will totally be back to pay full price! Excellent food and great service. I wouldn't recommend a large group but for less than five people, this was the best Mexican I have tasted in Wellington. Highly recommend.

It's not over priced as Las Margaritas, the staff is friendly, the food arrives super fast and the servings are huge. Que viva Viva Mexico!

Tried this recently after being it recommended to me by a friend and can say that hands down this is the best Mexican I've tried in Wellington. I'd been here when it was under the previous owners and wasn't that impressed, but that has definitely changed.
Although the menu is small, it is highly customisable. With a range of fillings, salsas, sauces and sizes for their Taco & Enchilada dishes. Then there's a set of Quesadillas options, as well as Mexican style egg/breakfast dishes and a cake of the day for dessert.
Personally I've only tried the Tacos, but can say that they were fresh & tasty, as was the salad, beans and sasla that accompanied them. As I commented that I'd like a hot sauce I was recommended the 'Mayan' red salsa, but was also given a small dish of delicious chili sauce to go with it.
Everyone that I was with really enjoyed their meal, as did I and I will definitely be coming back. Highly recommended.
WOW! Most amazing takeaways I have had in a long time, and glad I got takeaways as shoveling that delicious food in my mouth would have been very unappealing to the other diners. Quick and delicious, seems way healthier than the alternative takeaways also. Great spice and flavoursome. I got two tacos, fish was my fav. So freakin good! Taking my friends there asap.
My girlfriend and I decided to go to Viva Mexico after reading all the reviews on this site. We were not disappointed. Without a doubt the best Mexican food we've ever had in New Zealand. Owners were really friendly, and everything was great value for money. If you like Mexican food, stop reading this and get down there!
I visited Viva Mexico after hearing that they'd had a change of ownership and a sprucing up and was absolutely thrilled with the new place. It's had a good paint and is now adorned with pictures/paintings of revolutionaries and artists- very "authentic" feeling.Its also open at least 5 days a week now which is great. It doesn't surprise me that the place is run by two Mexican chefs, the food is absolutely delicious and akin to what you'd find in a little taqueria in Mexico (I spent a month there) with a few added extras, ie. slatherings of scrummy sauce. Service is very friendly and they tell me they are in the process of getting their liquor license, Hurray! I'd definitely recommend to lovers of mexican food, and those wanting yummy comfort food also!
The only authentic mexican food I have found on the north island. The flavors are fresh and delicious. The owner is a lovely person and happy to talk to you. It helps that the cooks are from mexico.
One of the best meals you can have in Wellington. The Golden Tacos are very tasty and the Cheesy Enchiladas are a MUST. Rich flavours and cheap meals make Viva Mexico a great place to dine.
The best Mexican food in New Zealand. Actually, perhaps the only REAL Mexican food in New Zealand. And the best tomatillo salsa I have ever had (and I lived in Mexico).

Easily the most authentic Mexican in Wellington, though I think Burrito Brothers is better (it's double the price though!) Viva Mexico is charming and a great place to eat when it's open! Check it out.

The hours are a bit frustrating - would like to take people there for dinner sometimes - but it's becoming a regular Saturday lunch spot.
Easily the best Mexican restaurant in the city. It's a small cosy place without any of the typical Wellington fancy-shmancyness (like really expensive decor and techno music). I got addicted to Mexican food when I was in California, and got even more addicted to it in Mexico. This place does it spot-on.. and for under $10.
My only complaint would be that the hours are sort of sparse, but at least you don't have to wait for a table.
It’s hard to find an authentic Mexican meal in New Zealand – but Viva Mexico gets very close. It’s definitely not gourmet, but Mexican is supposed to be cheap and cheerful. All the staff were talking Spanish, which makes it feel even more authentic. The meals are tasty, that atmosphere is perfect, and the staff are super friendly.
Make sure you try their home made spicy sauce!
