Definitely not going to be a regular spot for me due to the price but good if you are in the mood for a greasy splurge lunch on the odd occasion. Can be super busy so expect a wait for a seat and food. Cool they have a vegan burger 👌🏽
So busy when we arrived. Said it would take 25 minutes but it took 50! But you know what? It was worth it. I thought it might be a little costly but I'm not too fussed about price if the food is good. I had the softshell crab burger, coleslaw, terakihi and chips. The chips were crispy and hot. The meal was yum. Having the choice of batters is a nice touch and knowing what fish is available before ordering is a nice touch too. Good Fish n Chips!
Great fish and chips. On the pricey end, but it is a long way to the competition. Fish is beautifully cooked, great crinkle cut chips (single serve could be shared). Nice local beer to wash it down.
The chippery is great if you're in a delicious greasy mood. Generous proportions at a fair price. The fish is battered very nicely, crunchy on the outside while moist in the inside. The curly fries are a MUST along side their home made aioli.
I usually go there for their burgers, as they are super good and originals; The curly fries are delicious too and this outlet is located in Murphy street.
The best fish and chips I’ve had in Wellington. Love the options for different fish and different chips.. I don’t tend to crave F&C, but I crave the Chippery.
Ordered online and the food turned up right in time about 25 minutes after I ordered. Chips were good although some of them so chunky they were raw. I went for beer battered fish which was delicious. Generous portions, piping hot. Love that they sell foxton fizz drinks too!
I love the chippery. It's such a good concept and the staff are always awesome. It would be great to see people write more reviews when they have a good experience instead of when they have a bad. You guys rock. Keep up the good work
Great food and atmosphere. Lunch time is busy can but that's to be expected in this part of town! Delicious shop for fish and chips - and they are open on weekends!
Good food. The burgers are quality and are definitely not your average fish n' chips fare. There can be a bit of a wait on busy nights but it's worth it.
They messed up my order tonight and forgot a burger, however they made up for it by delivering the burger to my house with a bunch of extra free food - everyone makes mistakes, it's how you recover from them that is important and for that they get a perfect 5/5 from me.
This Week's Roommates loves the Chippery! Excellent staff, a wide variety of options (also vegan and gluten-free options), and a cosy, yet sophisticated atmosphere. With 5 different chips options and Garage Project beer on-tap, I'll definitely be going back!
This place maybe in the Fast Food category but it is so popular that the fast part is relative...
I recommend ordering online - we did on a Friday evening and still had a 45 minute wait.
The food options are many and being gluten free, this place is a gem! I had a G/F burger and fries, my colleaguea had the traditional f'n'c. There are so many fish varieties its definitely worth trying something new.
The agria handcut chips are rough cut so the size of each chip varies and some of the chips looked more like whole potatoes. My colleagues would have like them a tiny bit smaller.
One last thing, for three of us; 2 fish, 1 large scoop agria chips, 1 G/F burger, 1 small scoop of fries, it was $42. I recommend going in hungry so you can eat your money's worth!
Overall decent experience and I would definitely go back to try the G/F batter.
I really like the choices of chips and batter, crumbed etc. The portions are large and tastes so good. Online ordering is also handy. I've also tried one of their salads, the green tea noodle with Thai lime dressing it was really good. Haven't tried the burgers though yet.
Upmarket fish and chips. Had burgers tonight, very tasty. While you can get a normal beef burger, was great as I had pulled pork, others in the party had fish and chicken.
Compared to other fish and chip shops is great as you can sit and wait for your order and if you want can eat there as well.
Recommend it as one up from you standard fish and chip take always, but be prepared to pay a bit more for the quality and freshness.
Good portions and good food. Well priced considering the hipsterish, boutiquey nature of the chippery, however a little expensive if you're just looking for a friday night fish and chip joint. Decor is slightly nautical feeling, cosy but homely. service was friendly and quick. The large fries is easily enough to feed three. Food came out hot, chips nice and crunchy. My pulled pork sandwich was delicious. I will definitely be back whenever I'm looking for quality fries at a good price.
I found in reviewing the Mt Vic Chippery that for bog standard fish and chips it was better, both for price and contents, to go to a bog standard fish and chip shop.
However unquestionably, when you want something out of the ordinary or you can't decide exactly what you want, Mt Vic and Thorndon Chipperies are worth a visit.
Personally I prefer Thorndon to Mt Vic - it has reminiscences of the previous restaurant, blue paintwork, cosy, small, and now with an extensive blackboard menu of all things chippy and fishy and other stuff like po boys and mushy peas.
Apart from wandering in between two hulks of testosterone who were having it out over parking, the chippery has a nice relaxed feel. The menu is so extensive however that it would be useful to have printed menus that could be taken away (sorry if I missed them). We were not the first to come in, who, startled by the blackboard menu, had to stand aside while someone else ordered, while mentally groping though the mass of offerings.
In the end we settled on panko crumbed alfonsino and snapper, with kumara chips. We had two motives for this selection - 1) to compare the kumara chips with those once produced by 162 (one fat bird) in karori and 2) to make a french fish-taco (I made that up sorry) by putting the fillets between halves of Gramercy baguette from Berhampore, lettuce and cornichons.
1) Not as good as the karori ones we both agreed.
2) The fish was delicious (both), perfectly cooked, nicely crumbed, and the multitude of textures from the crusty bread, crisp crumbed fillet, fishy juices, crisp lettuce and the tangy cornichons, all racked up with maldon sea salt and freshly ground pepper - unfortunately eaten before it could be photographed.
Damn good fish and chip shop for something special.
The Chippery started with the Mount Vic Chippery and then expanded to our side of town, the Thorndon Chippery. We have been meaning to visit since it opened but life with Miss Muffin has got in the way. She was off out on a jaunt with friends today and we decided that this was the day.We did the food shopping and popped out the back of New World Thorndon, the Chippery is just across the road.
There is something great about doing the food shopping and then going somewhere for lunch, it feels bad, so very bad. Having fried stuff just adds to this bad but good. The Chippery was good, oh so very good.
One thing you need to know about The Chippery is that it is not your conventional chips in paper place, this is classy fish and chips. It is more expensive and it is very good quality. We ate in and were served our food on wooden blocks. On the table there were forks, salt , pepper and vinegar. I was so pleased to see vinegar as it is an English staple with chips and not often seen in New Zealand.
Right, onto our food. Mr M ordered Gurnard in a beer batter with a large scoop of hand cut agria fries. His fish was in three pieces and the serve of fries was huge. He didn't finish all of them and would like it noted, it was due to the size of the serve and he loved them. I decided to be a different and went for the fish balls. I had no idea of the size and ordered two and a small portion of hand cut agria fries. I too had too much food and left some fries and a bit of a fish ball.
Those fish balls are going to call me back and beckon me in with their fragrant ways. They were delicious. They crumb on the outside was crisp and the flavour inside was fresh. I would liken them to a grown up fish cake. There was the taste of coriander, chilli and the lemon I squeezed on them. My mouth is watering just thinking about their loveliness. I also tried Mr muffins fish, that was good too and I know we will be back with Miss so she can demolish some too. She will also help make a bigger dent on those fabulous hand cut agria fries.
The fries do deserve a big mention. They are big fries and crispy in all the right places. We Muffins love agree spuds and would be hard pushed to try any of the other assortment of chips on offer. Go see for yourself.
Restaurant quality takeaway with seats to dine in. Beautiful character building. I had Akaroa salmon with a mixed salad and the salmon was expertly cooked to medium as i had asked for it and the skin was perfectly crispy. Extremely good value!
This place is new and is housed in what was formerly Le Canard. You can't miss this place as it has a huge fish on the roof! I'm not really a fish and chip person , but on the rare occasions I have the urge I tend to head to Starfish on Molesworth Street, but, after today, Starfish now has huge competition! Today I tried a beef burger and crinkle cut chips - they are pretty close to the type you get at Harry Ramsden's in Hong Kong. Pretty damn good! This is gourmet fish n' chips ... as it is close to work this is where I will be going when the urge arises. Hell I would even drive in from the Hutt Valley just to have fish n'chips from here. I was so wrapped up in the awesomeness I forgot to take a photo of my food - ah well, next time. going back to try the blue cod & the pulled pork sandwich ...
May 2017:
They need to pay attention to what has been ordered !!! It's never in the right combinations in the boxes! I went back tonight and ordered kumara chips with aoli and a cajun fish burger with crinkle cut fries ... the kumara chips & burger were in one box & there was no effing aoli that I'd paid $2 for.
Flash as fish n chips.
Select the fish the cooking style. Select the fries. Select the sauce. Enjoy!
I very high cooked to order and fresh as can be. If fish isn't your thing the burgers are great too.

The business has changed hands recently. Usual standard and in a period of rebuild.
Now called Thorndon Twin Fish. Ask for Eric the new owner. Harvey is 2IC. Thanks for your attention. Phone number is the same. New website in production. !!
Local fish and chips with care. Fresh & Tasty. Easy. Tap beer is excellent. Great service. Plenty of choice. Burger is excellent.
Friendly staff, tasty food, pricey for fish & chips
There are something like 30 didn't types of fish on the board but the ones with the rocks is what's actually available. Not sure if this is usual or because I was there 1 hour before closing time but there were about 5 actually available.
There was plenty of seating options though the place was busy because most people seem to order takeaway.
I had the kingfish in tempura batter with their handcut chips and aioli sauce. This cost around NZD21 which is what I'd expect for fancy fish & chips.
The battery had a lovely crunch, the fish was flakey and did not have that old fishy taste at all. It was perfect with a bit of salt and pepper. The chips were just amazing. Crunchy in the outside, hot and soft inside. I can't believe I managed to practically eat them all considering their size but I found them addictive, especially with the aioli, or even just a bit of salt and pepper.
Also, apologies for the weird angle on my 3rd photo but I was avoiding a fellow customer's face
Fantastic gluten free options available- suitable for a coeliac. They have a separate fryer for gluten free, can do GF batter for fish, and crumb for the southern fried chicken burger, GF chips, GF burger buns, and GF sauce. Highly recommend.
Good little lunch joint with a reliable fish and chip special for $12! Thorndon Chippery is a good local addition and makes lunch much more interesting. They offer a range of fish options and you can choose your style of chip from French to curly, I recommend chunky!
The menu offers a few other good choices. Strong burger options include the fried chicken and vegetarian burgers. Plan to order one of their craft beers to go with your little linch.
Service is fast from a friendly staff.
Go here for a good little work lunch relying on decent prices.
Phenomenal fish and curly fries, excellent portion, delicious and fresh! Highly recommend this unassuming little shop, with good music and beer on tap.
Popped in a couple of months ago and had a fantastic meal with friendly staff and a good price. I got the Halloumi Burger and Kumara fries, an easy 10/10. My boyfriend enjoyed his fish and chips as well, we‘ll definitely come back when we are in Wellington.
They also have specials on, so definitely have a look what they are offering that day/week!
I had the craft beer battered tarakihi which is a fish native to New Zealand and Australian waters. Hand cut chips and a razzle dazzle tap beer. Go early rather than late. Staff worked hard all day and were ready to enjoy the long holiday weekend. Or maybe it's back to the grind the next day. Either way, the frequent exasperated breathes told me it was time to go.
Fish is the best I've had in Wellington, kumera chips also a definite 10. Was expecting the same for the burgers but would give them a 7 out of 10 (we had the pork belly and fish burgers).
Great selection of fish. Good for takeaway. They do delivery too. But limited seating, so not so suitable for long conversation over dinner.
fish and chips very nice,I will back tomorrow .
Wow. So much choice! Gluten free battered fish and chips, deep fried battered gluten free chicken pieces AND gluten free burgers with bun. PLUS gluten free beer and great service. I'm coming back to work through the menu!!!
Chippery is my favourite fish and chip place in Wellington, no doubt! Great menu and service is superb. Great email promo deals for regulars. Thorndon is certainly the lesser of the two chippery locations, I often find something in my order is overcooked. The bun in my picture was very dry and unsavory, took away from the burger.
Ordered a pork belly burger with some beer battered fries and it was phenomenal! The staff there were so friendly and helpful - shoutout to Harvey for making my burger as well as Eve + Will for serving me! You guys are amazing
Really nice place and food tastes yummy. Not like the typical NZ fish and chips where you can also buy 10 million other oily things. It's just a simple and delicious menu. A few tables inside or take away. Great lunch specials.
