The food is good and the sushi is a very quick and easy lunch option. If you are choosing to dine in the food is also tasty but there is very limited atmosphere
Affordable, clean, efficient and tasty. Consistently good. TJ Katsu makes good food fast. Ideal for a short lunch break. I have been here many times and will go again and again.
I have both dined in with hot meals and had take away sushi at TJ Katsu several times.
The noodle and rice dishes taste really good. The katsu chicken is always well cooked and has a really good flavour. I like that they give you a complimentary and delicious Miso soup with every dine-in cooked meal.
The service is always really good and I like the art on the walls.
Highly recommended.
One of the best Japanese restaurants in Wellington CBD. There was a huge variety of sushi and the ones I ordered was rolled well and tasted yum.
The rice dish “spicy chicken don” was not too spicy and had the flavour of spices/sauce they used. I’m saying because most spicy dishes would just feel like tasting chilli or chilli sauce. However, this dish was amazing and would definitely visit for lunch again next time I’m in town :) this is a place I could recommend for sure :)
If you are into fresh sashimi but would like a complete meal, I would recommend the Fresh Salmon bento as it tasted fresh and delicious including their Miso soup. Great staff and reasonable price.
Damn!! This place has one of the best Japanese food ever. The food so rich in flavour and the quantity enough for 2 people. Definitely worth the money when all your taste buds are sensing
So yummy! Very generous portions for katsu chicken takeaway
Service was good - when ordering the staff were very helpful
Will be returning again
TJ do a mean Chicken Katsu curry.
Vegetarian options are limited but they do have a couple tofu options.
Tonight it took a while for staff to notice we were ready to order but once ordered the food came quickly and hot!
The tables are directly next to each other so you are intimate with strangers and privvy to their conversations.
It's also a sushi place so you do have that tug between restaurant and takeaway.
Came here expecting Japanese curry, to my surprise the all the staff were speaking Korean. As we were too hungry to hunt for another place to eat, we went ahead and ordered the pork katsu curry and gyoza. The food was pretty good as we already anticipated that it'll be a Korean style curry but I was a bit disappointed as I have been hoping to eat Japanese style curry.
Really love the $1 sushi deals!Great music, great vibes, great location~Really love the style of the restaurant as it brings back memories of my trip to Japan.10/10 will be back again!
Favourite sushi place in Wellington delicious sushi and skewers! Staff usually very friendly wide variety of different types of sushi! Also very authentic and very affordable!
The setup of the restaurant is confusing, with their self serve sushi section at the beginning of the shop and the restaurant dining at the back, therefore my friend and I were queued and confused, people were pushing ahead of us before we could speak to the staff and thus we were standing unattended to for about 5 minutes, would have been nice to have had a staff member approach and direct us as is the norm at restaurants. However, my first impressions were quickly shifted, the service was phenomenally aware and attentive, the food came out very fast. And boy, was that an incredible meal! It was so so so delicious, cannot wait to eat there again. Also it was very filling, neither of us were able to finish our meals, which was unexpected considering the affordable price. I really greatly appreciated the vegan key, that is a rare feature of restaurants and it saves a lot of effort on my part.
Outstanding A++ The service is always top notch and the staff go out of there way to make sure you have a great experience.
This is fast food at its best.
When I first came to Wellington I was amazed at the self service sushi. Tj Katsu has the best layout and variety of sushi. I love it, its so delicious and the kitchen menu has good portions and prices. Also cool music and decor!
Best sushi in town and awesome crispy chicken skewers! Great prices and opening hours too.
I takeaway at least once a week but always nice to eat in occasionally as the staff are so friendly
I'm plain devastated that I can't give this restaurant a higher rating based on the simple seating arrangement. But that is the only negative thing I can bring myself to say.
I really was unsure about eating here but the moment the food was placed in front of us I was thoroughly impressed. Edamame was a new thing for me and it made a perfect warm up for the meal to come. Swiftly followed by teriyaki chicken curry and vegetarian dumplings. Everything about the meal from how it was presented to how it tasted was a pleasure.
The whole experience was fun, eating with chopsticks, the crazy artwork on the walls and menus and the Japanese music playing in the background. I will be looking forward to my return trip :)
Busy lunchtime spot. Pretty good selection on offer. All the standard sushi variants are here. Prices are clearly marked and reasonable.
I sat in with two colleagues. I ordered a mix of 5 pieces. The sushi is good, especially the octopus balls. I thoroughly enjoyed those. Had them in other places and they've been slimy, but not theses. Very tasty.
The only thing that wasn't the best was the wasabi. They offer the sachets. I don't like the wasabi from these as much. It's not a show stopper for me, but a preference.
Overall, enjoyable sushi. Will visit again.
This place is a must for anyone looking for a quick, healthy, and tasty bite to eat. There was a bit of a mix up with our order but they rectified it immediately and we found everything to be delicious! Next time I will definitely try out the sushi.
We had a wonderful meal here, we went in late at night and the waitress and waiter were still very obliging, polite and helpful. We ordered a bunch of different meals and everyone was really happy with their meal. The miso soup is one of the best I've tasted. I had the teriyaki tofu, I'm normally not a big fan of teriyaki, tofu or udon noodles, but this meal was fantastic!
I often pop into this place if I happen to be in the vicinity at lunchtime. It's always busy and that's a sure sign that it is providing good food. I am a sit-down diner and have no problem with the layout that has displeased one reviewer. Service is prompt ad friendly.
Today I visited with two Japanese friends from Chiba-ken. They seemed to enjoy the fare and I asked their honest opinion and they responded "Oshi des" which means that it was delicious.
My only complaint is that they do not serve coffee, which for a Wellington establishment is extremely strange. I won't downgrade them for that as I am reviewing them on their Japanese food.
I have eaten here multiple times and continue to as I have been satisfied with all the meals I've ordered. The first meal I tried was a Katsu Chicken and the chicken was cooked perfectly with a crispy outside. As I'm new to miso soup and wasn't very pleased when I first had it, I was sceptical to try it again but was surprised to find that it tasted just as delicious as the rest of my meal. Something I'm able to buy when I have spare change is their sushi which is much cheaper than many other sushi places I've been to. The sushi is very unique and the sauce they use is very unique and distinct with its slight sweet taste. The staff are very friendly and always get me and my friends seated quickly before serving us with water. The food also doesn't take long to come. Another thing I love about this restaurant is that they play Korean pop music which is something I am very familiar. For me, this is a nice touch as I don't know many other places that play Korean pop and make good food. All in all, I have had a good experience in dining at this restaurant and will remain a customer in the future.
Started coming a month or two ago. The food is fantastic, the waitresses are very sweet and I enjoy the cultural aspect of it. I think I'll be coming here for a long time at this rate.
I'm vegetarian and really like the Kakiage Sushi. The teriyaki is great as well. My number one destination in town for food now.
I work close by and regularly buy lunch here. Definitely the best sushi in Wellington, with great variety. I like that they use free range chickens.
Best take-away sushi in Wellington. Always very fresh and tasty. Free range chicken. Also the meals are very good.
I really like their sushi! The service can be a bit hit and miss when you eat at the restaurant but I am a regular take-away sushi customer. Good value too.
Absolutely amazing food and excellent value. Wines were all very good and also extremely reasonably priced. Staff were extra helpful and friendly, will definitely be going back! Loved the presentation of the food and lots of attention to detail, plus all the food was extremely fresh! A lovely dining experience, can't wait to go back!
Best best best ever sushi in Wellington. Since my friend introduced Katsu and Udon to me a while ago. I eat here about twice a week, more if I can. I have told so many people about this place. Because I love the fresh food, the fact that you can eat 'cafeteria style' and each person pays for their own food, so there's no nasty bill surprises at the end. Great for when you're in a group and on a budget. I also find that I can eat until sushi comes out of my ears for less than the price of a glass of wine at other restaurants.
I HIGHLY recommend this place if you want fresh, quality, affordable food.
One tiny little vice i do have though, staff aren't that friendly, considering I'm a regular here. However, guess you can understand that, seeing they are soooo busy making delicious food, who has time to be friendly, right?
We found Katsu&Udon the best "street" sushi place in Wellington! Been there several times! Thank you guys!
The food is always fresh and the staff are attentive and friendly, I've eaten here a number of times, lunch, dinner and casual snacking and have always left happy and fulfilled!!! Nice one!!!! Addicted, yes!!!!!
This is the nicest Japanese restaurant I have tried in Wellington. Reasonable price and food, the staff are lovely. My favorite is Katsu and meals with Teriyaki sauce. Also, they sell the best Sushi around Courtney place.
I am a regular here and recommend it to everyone!
This is my regular for sushi at lunch time. It's super cheap, starting at $1, and as good as any others I've tried in the city. There's quite often a line out the door, but as with most sushi places this moves along quite fast. The staff always bring water to your table, and I'd recommend getting a miso to go with your meal. Everything looks and tastes fresh. Their evening menu looks worth a try too - but I haven't done this yet.
Food wasn't out of this world, but the price reflected the quality I would say for the most part.
It was my first Japanese food. I virtually liked it. Food was well cooked, fresh, and healthy. Staff were also smiley and nice. I will definitely get back there in the pipeline.
Sumptuous menu. Worth the wait and rightly priced!!
Very good experience with reasonable price, service is also good.
Spicy chicken Don has a lots of chicken! Katsu chicken is crunchy and yummy.
Despite the absence of WiFi, or the questioning and confused face of the waitress when I asked for an L&P, the quintessential New Zealand drink I've learned being obsessed with, the experience with this shop was very good overall.
The food was not immediately cheap, but still justified by its quality and portion size.
I ordered a "Combination Bento", and in a dozen of minutes I was welcomed by a stunning quantity of food encompassing chicken katsu teriyaki, teriyaki chicken on a generous portion of fluffy and perfectly cooked rice, two pieces of meat-based sushi (whose pieces of chicken and meat were not freshly cooked but still met my taste buds quite requestive standards), various small starters like crunchy katsu prawn and spring rolls, and a salad.
The chicken was pleasantly tender and flavorful, and all the katsu pieces crunchy outside and succulent inside.
I would give 5 stars if some of the pieces of meat wouldn't have been barely reheated and the local beverage was available, but this is the fullest 4-stars review I could give to a restaurant.
A franchise Japanese restaurant for quick stop. The atmosphere is ok, just as a typical fast food pit stop. The food is a bit too sweet but in general ok. The price is a bit too pricey for the taste.
The food was amazing! Really yum and it came out fast as well. Definitely recommend
Love their food and service! A lady who brought us food was really kind and polite. Also, they only used eco-friendly paper based cutlery, containers and stuff! It’s really nice of them taking care of the environment too :)
This was such a humble experience here. There were alot of people there however the food was just amazing. It was also affordable. For such a well attracted shop, they need a bigger shop.
Friendly and helpful staff. Food with good portion and reasonable price. The tariyiki tofu is too sweet for me.
For the price, you get awesome sushis, makis, hosomakis. The quality is consistent. Great franchise. I recommended 100%
Best bento I've ever had and sushi was also so flavourful, tasty. Definitely would come back to try other dishes!
The Bento boxes have huge portions, I had the crispy chicken with stirfried beef in It. The food was very good but a little too much for me I couldn't eat it all. The crispy chicken had great flavours and the beef was nice and moist. The salad had a nice dressing on it.
Very good service. Sushi made to order. Hot dish menu like katsu don or teriyaki tofu don available as well. Can get very busy during peak times.
Chicken curry was really good, and the staff members were really nice. Thank you for having us!
