The $29 Bill Cutting Breast dish had a juicy piece of chicken breast 🐓 . It was perfectly cooked and was easy to cut + eat. Mashed potatoes 🥔 was creamy and the flavour complimented well with the wine/herb sauce. Coleslaw itself was standard, could’ve done with some seasoning 🧂in my opinion.
The other dishes such as the mixed platter and veggie nachos had if portions, but flavours were typical of pub/bar food otherwise. Garlic bread 🥖 was not too bad, I did like the taste of the butter 🧈 and pesto sauce.
I especially appreciated the ambiance that I experienced in my visit. The interior delivers a vintage, but kiwi style hospitality that is welcoming to both adults and children. It goes well with the friendly waitresses on the upstairs floor. Despite being a busy Saturday night, they made sure that our food and drinks arrived in a timely manner 🙃
We went on the night the ironside steak was $25.00 was amazing meal, we had to wait a bit to be seated as the place was packed, we weren't asked if we want dessert, which we did, pretty good service, but it was the meal that got the 4* for me.
This place is great for a few brews and a feed with mates. There's a nice sheltered courtyard if you don't mind the odd smoker and the service is tops! Thank you to the friendly waitress for your recommendation about the chicken and bacon burger. I was not disappointed!
It comes with a decent amount of chicken, grilled cheese on the top and bottom of the bun, bacon, onions, tomato, lettuce and a generous amount of fries. Love the signature burger sauce - like big mac sauce just better!
Great service. Staff are helpful and really friendly. Place has a good vibe wether your having dinner or just out for a cheeky or 2. Recommend this place to anyone who hasnt tried it.
Went there for the last big test match, had a 200g steak dinner with beer. Good old Kiwi tucka, but I really loved the steak, was a true medium rare! Juicy and tender, the way I like it. Even the outer edges, where it cooks faster, were still red, juicy and well seared. Other places overcook those parts (some even cooking it till well done!) having left the steak on the grill too long, but this is one of those rare places that gets it just right. Kudos to the skills of the chef!
In summary, this is pretty good for pub food. Don't come here expecting fine dining, and you won't be disappointed.
This is a great place to go for a great meal with friends and/or family, I have been here many times (mostly on Tuesday nights)
Tuesday night is steak night (400g steak, chips, slaw, egg, and a drink, for $25)
I would highly recommend calling and making a booking (even if you only make the booking when you get into the car)
They have a great menu and will make a adjustment as requested
The food was really great and customer service was really good to start off with, but went downhill as the night went on. We booked a table for 7:30pm and were told we had to sit at a high table until our table was ready so we ordered a few drinks and waited. We were then told we should order our food quickly as there were two large groups ordering soon. We finally got to our seated table at 8pm only to wait for a further 50 min for our food. I really wanted to rate 5 stars, but waiting 50 min for your mains was way too long (4 ordered steak meals and 1 ordered the filo meal). I get it's Christmas and they're busy but should be told meals would take that long. Food was cooked well and great value.
Meet with friends for brunch...eggs are always poached to perfection and they brew a great coffee. Great atmosphere and service! Love their 2-4-1 mains 👌👌
I was here recently for lunch with a group of friends. The quality, portions and price of our meals was superb and the service was exceptional. We are all looking forward to returning at some time
Good honest tasty food with generous portions, easily cater for large groups of diners. Diner comes out in reasonable time considering the busy nite. The staff are helpful and attentive and billing is very accurate.
We have been here a few times now and they have Great pub food. Everything i have personally ordered here has been good so far. Their lunch meals are reasonably priced too. My son didnt like their butter chicken and i did have a taste of it and i must say it did taste like watties tomato soup with chicken pieces in it. So wouldnt order that again. If you want to dine in a quiet atmosphere dont come here as its loud and rowdy. With a family that has 3 children this suits us as we dont have to tell the kids to be quiet all the time. Staffs service is unpredictable. We have had fabulous service and then terrible service. The big disappointment was I always like to get a coffee at the end of the meal and they advised that they had turned there coffee machine off so no can do. With a pub thats open late at night this surprised me. Overall we will continue to visit 1841.
It was my first visit to this place on my sisters recommendation. Welcome was nice & warm. We were also told about the lunch specials.
We ordered Beef Nachos , Fish & Chips and Ginger beer..
Overall was good experience with outdoor seating. Though I had bit different taste in mind for nachos but it was equally good or could have been better. Quantity was good too.
I wont mind coming back to this place but will see few more places first too ..
Went for Sunday lunch with family. Was good as it has plenty of room, and with one a couple of elderly, one broken leg and one baby amongst the ten of us, we need a bit of space.
The staff were friendly , and made the group feel welcome. The food was basic pub grub - but good value.
We had a great time. Thanks.
This place is awesome 👍👍 the steak was the best! Big fat and juicy just how I like it 😊 the chips on the side could of done with less salt but still good tho and the coleslaw complimented the dish altogether.
Service could of been a bit better, but would definitely recommend coming back again
Good pub grub. Bit inconsistent at times, but usually pretty good. Good service, reasonable prices and the best BBQ ribs I've found in wellington so far.
I ordered the fettuccine dish, was very nice...above average.I asked about the dessert special which was a white chocolate cheesecake...it was all sugar and lacked depth of flavour (very sugary)...below average. Was there with a larger group for a club break-up adults and children alike. The duty manager seemed overly concerned about the under age members of our group and even after we stipulated we're only here for dinner, he wanted to see ID and ensure legal gaurdians were present etc etc. Not sure what the law is but if you have a large party and walk into say 'Lonestar', I'm sure they're not going to single every single underaged person out even before sitting down right??Other than the above issue, the staff were great!

With the cheapest jug being an $11 Amstel lite and the other jugs all settling at $13 this is a good place for a cheap drink! Although a few more varieties of beer on tap would be welcome what they do serve is ice cold and gets the job done. The foods reasonably priced considering the sheer size of the meals, pork ribs will set you back about $30 but will see you right with an entire kg of rips on top off some delicious home made rough cut chips. The slaw that came with the meal however was below average, the red cabbage was bland and lacked any discernible dressing and really let the meal down.
I've been here so many times that I'm surprised I haven't reviewed it yet!.Take advantage of their specials!! They're so worth it. 2 4 1 Monday's are a bargain and there's a dish for everyone. I thoroughly enjoy the fish and tend to go here to get my fish fix as no one else in my family eats fish! The rest of my family tend to go for steak, which can't really be faulted but sometimes a medium can come out medium rare and medium rare, out rare. Thursday get the 'biggie' steak dish for $20, but again, bit touch-n-go with the medium rare. $10 Sunday brekkie is worth every dollar. Sometimes the wait times can be a bit too long. If you're prepared for that, you'll thoroughly enjoy your dining experience here. Last dining experience came to about $90 on a Monday for 4 mains, 1 child meal, 2 desserts and approx. 4 drinks. A Thursday night dining experience for 6 adults, 1 child, came to around $260 - with quite a lot of drinks both alcoholic ($10 jug special night) and fizzy, a main each, child meal, couple of desserts & couple of garlic breads.
1841 take their name from the year that Johnsonville was established in the Wellington area. This venue has had a few facelifts over the past six years but I reckon the current owners have a winning formula. The food has really good pub grub. Its a little noisy when there are high profile sports games in as the casual drinking area is only a partition away from the cosy dining area. The kaukau salmon is my fave, the salmon is served not overly greasy and and the honey hinted mash is such a lovely combo with the fish. If you want a quiet meal out with family head there between 6-800pm on a friday or 6-700pm on a saturday.
Came here yesterday for meal & quiz night. The Fish of the Day (oven-baked gurnard, potato & sun-dried tomato bake, cucumber salsa, salad) was seriously tasty. I was chuffed about Tabasco sauce being in the condiment box as I love to put hot-sauce on nearly everything! The staff who were working last night were extremely friendly and professional.
As visitors to Wellington we asked some of the locals where a well priced dinner was. We were told 1841!
My friends and I dined at 1841 on a Monday night which lucky for us was two for one. What an amazing dinner we had! And even better to feed four, with drinks and with lots of side plates, only cost $90!
Staying in Wellington till Thursday morning, we decided to travel again to Johnsonville for dinner. Again we had a wonderful meal. This place is faultless. Amazing staff, quality food, and great prices!
I'm shocked at some of the other reviews because I had a perfect experience, twice!
We have been regular diners at 1841 since the new ownership took over a year ago. Noticeably, this place is beicoming busier no matter what day of the week. The menu offers a wide variety(although we have been through it in full!) and is very well priced. If you are after good pub grub at a great price this is the place. The staff are very attentive, friendly and welcoming. I also come here with my girlfriends and feel safe and comfortable. Perhaps adding a tasting platter of some sort may cater to the females a little more than the deep fried platter that I'm sure the lads love! Overall great offering, service with a smile and a place that caters to the people! Keep it up
We recently held a combined 50th and 10th anniversary at 1841.
The staff were absolutely fantastic and went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. With the staff doing all the hard work, we were left to tend to our guests and not worry about a thing.
The food was a fantastic price, tasted great and looked great!
Thank you to all of the team at 1841 - we will definitely be holding another function there!

We have been locals for 3 years now and in all the times we have been here we have never been disappointed with the service or our meals, the $10 lunches are awesome too.
Great starters and meal! If you are a fan of spice i highly recommend the wings! They will definitely leave you "warm" or dial back on the spice and try the cajun calamari! That paired with their house chipotle sauce will leave your mouth watering for more. Moving on to my main (i had "The Ironside 400g sirloin steak meal with extra garlic butter) the steak was only very slightly over cooked for what was asked for, but please do not let that statement detract from the amazing meal that it was! The atmosphere was VERY loud, however, it is after all a Bar Restaurant so that is to be expected.
I do highly recommend if staying near Johnsonville to make a booking and head on down!
Friendly staff. Good food and fast service.
We had pork ribs and the serving is huge, good bang for your buck.
Good place with great selection of food and decent prices.
Thursday night special are worth it. Any main foe $25.
Decent atmosphere.
Only thing I have to say is make sure you pick your own beer and don't rely on staff recommendations as the ones they recommend taste like toilet water.

Tuesday night and the place was heaving. Mind you, a good steak meal and a drink for $29 and you can't go wrong. Despite being out in the courtyard on a cold night, it was pleasantly comfortable and wait staff were friendly.
This would be our 3rd visit together as a
3-some as it's usually 4 of us.
Lil sis, mum and I enjoyed our lovely starters of twister prawns followed by our lovely main meal of steak, chicken, and burger meal with lovely salad and hot chips. The service also so good as usual, considering the many diners in at the time... See you next time and thanks again for always such a great meal and likewise service.
PS Wow I had to take a pic of the cool art work in the ladies. No, I never had any alcohol(not that day!)!
😁😊😁 🍴👏👏👏
Really busy but even so we had great service. Food was yummy and they had live music which set a nice scene.

Our party of four enjoyed our visit to 1841. Friendly service. Good food. Adequate portions. Lots of sport options on TVs dotted around the place. It was bigger than I expected. Easy parking.
Absolutely loving their steak ! Good value for money despite some small increments.
200g Ironside steak was delicious as ever. I usually get this, and I'm never disappointed! Steak was done nicely and really tasty! Chips are fresh and crispy. The garlic butter is a nice touch whether you leave it on your steak or leave it to melt over the chips:) and I never have any complaints about the rest of the dish. You will definitely be full after this meal. The protion sizes are generous at 1841.
Our waitress was friendly and accommodating. She mentioned that she was about 3 weeks new to the job, but we all thought she did a great job!
