I had the monsieur sandwich, really nice, different and tasty, ham was high quality and my colleagues had eggs with salmon, coffee was really nice and we all enjoyed our meals
This is Brittany in Wellington. True to origin but as well as many galettes and other regional specialities there are Kiwi options too. Great value - try the casserole de pecheur for example. Friendly informal service.
I will never claim to be a French cuisine expert, purely due to the fact that I just don’t eat enough French cuisine.
Was in Wellington for work and was strolling around Lambton reminiscing my law school days when I happened to walk by Cafe Breton. I’ll be lying if I said that there was a magnetic pull that resonated from Cafe Breton, rather it was more for simple curiosity that there was a new Cafe I’ve never seen before.
Entering the cafe there was a distinct home feel to the establishment, warm and cheerful which would feel great compared to your usual corporate mojo feel. Being warmly greeted definitely left a positive impression.
I had a coffee and caramelised peach slice with ice cream? Not sure if that was the exact description, it was tasty for me quite light and perfect as a afternoon snack.
Showstopper: Great service and coffee
Overall Grade: B+
I've always enjoyed my visits to Café Breton! Both in its current, CBD location and in its original Kelburn.
Although not "Cheap And Cheerful" the food is plentiful, and well made - I'm yet to order a dud! The Staff are always lovely, and the service is usually quick.
A personal favourite!
Because of our lack of our Britanny and his specialities, we decided to go to the cafe Breton. It a little restaurant, friendly. It's always a pleasure to find French people at the other side of the world. Galettes were very delicious, I know what I'm talking about, I'm from Britanny. It's approximately the same taste. I recommend it. The staff was nice but too professional, not casual enough (not too Breton spirit).
A great little french cafe and crepery in the heart of Wellington. The decor of the place is very well done, and could transport you back to France. I went here last week with some colleagues.
The staff were very friendly in general. Only had coffee, but the food that others were eating did look delicious. Coffee was OK, slightly on the weak side for me, so may have to ask for a double shot next time!
The french fare on offer here is absolutely fantastic. They also do a good coffee but the food is the highlight. The staff are friendly and helpful, energetic and in pace with the busyness of the cafe. The cafe is very clean and tidy, and fills up fast with counter orders and table diners. The menu is excellent. The cabinet food is excellent. Worth a visit.
Café Breton is a fabulous little French themed café. The café is clean, the service very pleasant and we both had the French Toast with crispy bacon and coffee/hot chocolate. Everything was very, very good. The menu has a very good selection and there is a range of light food that is cooked fresh as well as a good range of cabinet food.
Luckily we got in before the lunchtime rush as this place get busy. My La Fermière was light and cooked to perfection as was my partners Sirloin Steak (in fact she compares other restaurants serving Steak to it still to this day). We stayed for a second coffee and were waited on well - providing a little giggle with our limited French. What's "Hickie" in French? :-)
Stopped in for a coffee/work meeting today as were many of the patrons it seemed at that time of the morning.... really nice feel and decor (simple but themed and a touch of nostalgia) friendly quick service, ample seating, great gluten free options on the menu means this is a spot I will return to. The coffee today was nice and I thought it was pretty strong and well priced.
The coffee was nice, a little on the weaker side but still definitely passable. The lemon tart is delicious, definitely recommend that as a compliment to your coffee. The French feel makes this a little bit special, and the location is nice and central which is also good.
One of the better French cafe's around, great service and the food & coffee is always consistently nice. I like the bacon and cheese quiche as well as the wide variety of fresh rolls on offer.
Had an early lunch of espressos, croissant and French onion soup. On par with anything I had in Paris. Well worth a try. Atmosphere and service classic French but friendlier!
Visited for breakfast. Their clock madame and garretto taste great.
Especially the ham inside clock madame was tasteful however it is so so thin.
If I had chance to stop by, visit again ASAP.
A French-inspired cafe with a fantastic range of dishes on the menu. The dishes are based on traditional French techniques and styles, but there is a real vibrancy and modern feel to the food.
While service is fairly slow during their busy lunch time hours, the food arrived fairly quickly after ordering. Prices are also reasonable, with hearty portion sizes.
Wait staff are friendly, and smile all the time!
A gorgeous atmosphere, lovely friendly staff and the food was spot on. Kids are already planning what they'd like to try next time, with the extensive menu of a great range of healthy and allergy conscious options. Loved it!
Every time I come to Wellington Cafe Breton always pleases. The Complet Crepe is wonderful and the coffee is strong but not bitter. Careful though...only dessert crepes in the late afternoon, but not a disappointment. The Choc/Banane was delicious.
I recommend Cafe Breton for a very delightful lunch and it is always a pleasure for very little outlay...particularly in Wellington.
My former partner loves Café Breton, and I'm quite fond of it, too. The menu is wonderful and the coffee is superb. It would be nice to hear the staff speaking French to the customers as well as amongst themselves, but still, two thumbs up!
A group of us went for breakfast early Saturday morning and each ate something different. Each dish was lovely; I would certainly go back. It may pay to ask for the chocolate sauce with the crepes to be served in a jug as my friend found there was just too much as it is quite rich; that would be the only thing to be aware of. Tres Bon!
This was my regular café when I used to work down the street at Kirkcaldie & Stains. It seems to be mainly a regular haunt of business people from the surrounding offices & staff from Kirks & other nearby businesses. The pastries are perfectly fine, my favourite being the chocolate almond croissant. There’s never much choice with the pastries though so it’s not terribly difficult to pick a favourite. But perhaps that's because I’m never there first thing in the morning? The menu is fantastic however, with a range of sweet & savoury crepes plus a few classic French dishes like French onion soup. I love a sweet crepe, particularly the one with lemon curd (sharp but sweet) & the one with chocolate sauce (although I’d much prefer it served with Nutella). The service is perfectly friendly & I always feel fine going there on my own.
I could be sitting in the Latin quarter such is the authenticity of this establishment. Last visit I met and shared a table with a world famous astrophysicist. The shabby chic unapologetic decor lends an ambience that inspires flamboyant gesticulation, passionate discussion and general appreciation of life sans worries. The food is authentic home made delicious and reasonably priced. The menu is displayed on a black chalk wall. Crepes, baguettes, pastry, gateaux... formidable! Coffee was smooth, hot and palatable. Always busy verging on crowded at lunch time, populated by local repeat custom and francophiles from here to Martinborough
Had the La Savoyarde, one of their savoury buckwheat crepes, and it was tasty! Service was friendly and good. Give this place a go whenever you're in town.

Café Breton is a small French café in CBD that has probably the best onion soup in the whole Wellington region. It's so good I always burn my tongue! They've got awesome galettes too (the Savoyarde is my favourite), although I haven't tried their crêpes yet. I definitely recommend it!
Had the crepes with pork sausage and added egg. Friend had the crepes le provincial. Also grabbed a take away macaron.
Delicious and filling. Good coffee
Love this wee cafe. Looks like a great range of crepes and other French cuisine. The almond croissant was not to my liking. The coffee was great.
If you are looking for a traditional crêpe this is the place!
Like if that wasn't enough their food just tastes amazing! And the service is brilliant. Thanks so much to the staff for helping me get some food and get to my conference on time 🥰
Huge menu of crepes. I had La Bergère (goats cheese, spinach, honey, walnuts) and it was very tasty. The cheese did become a bit overwhelming towards the end of the dish but if rather that than not enough!
Great French Cafe.
It is a cosy restaurant.
What makes it great is the outstanding food.
Taste is fabulous and looks great as well.
Recommended.
Nice little French cafe. Friendly personnel. Reasonable prices. Good savoury crepes, French wine and small desserts. Sweet crepes could be better though.
Great little cafe with wonderful atmosphere. Kind service. The crepes were fantastic and the scrambled eggs were some of the best I’ve ever had.
Great customer service. All the staff were so friendly and spoke French like it was a real French cafe in France. Amazing fresh food that was cooked in the morning. I had a Ham and Cheese Quiche that was beautiful. Coffe is great and hot (Unlike most places) My Aunty had a croissant and said it was beautiful. Definitely a must go to place if your in Wellington CBD!
Fantastic food, great coffee, friendly people. Ideal place to stop and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a short while.
First visit to Cafe Breton, if you want a light lunch then perfect place. Our table ordered crepes, french toast and salad type dishes. Everything was fresh and tasty.
There is table service and the wait for food was not too long.
Great waiter even if it was his very first day!
The crêpes took us back to France and proper cider from Bretagne.
They made a special effort to give us pancakes when the kitchen was about to close. It was much appreciated. Lovely authentic little restaurant with a blackboard menu.
It is true that they serve their French onion soup scalding hot which will definitely burn your entire pallete. As this order came 20minutes late during my break (eventhough I was told 5 minute wait time), I had to gulp it down only to burn myself badly.
Nevertheless the soup tastes really good hence can't go down with the rating.
Délicieux. What a great discovery. Have walked past before yet today I had the chance to stop for lunch with a group. We loved it. Le Bergère 😋
