Food was alright. I like how there's 2 for 1 deals, very couple-friendly. Interior vibe is very casual, I like the . Food portions are really good but it could be a little cheaper for its price. Would come back on a special occasion, if I crave soul food or if I'm extremely hungry.
The southern fried chicken is my favourite as well as the wings! I love the new milkshakes they always have every now which keeps it fresh! This is a great place for decent portioned meals and I love the vibe of the place. Staff a super nice too!
Such an amazing place to chill! Had halloumi burger, Cajun fries, fried chicken burger called Big papa along with a couple of cocktails as shown in the pictures below. Food was absolutely fantastic and the cocktails are to die for! Didn’t try their milkshakes as yet but I have heard great things about them.
The chicken burger was cold when served, we asked one of the staff members to heat it up. They actually made the entire burger from scratch again! That was a very nice gesture. Highly recommend this place, perfect for hanging out with your family and friends.
Fantastic good here! When I went it was quite busy and I understand why, it’s a ready nice quirky place great for going out with friends for a btw to eat.
Great family eating, fair choice of dishes, great portions, recommend the cajun fries. I had the Haloumi salad, top notch! Nice friendly service quirky plane seats are a feature
A top location in the heart of Wellington, great grub and even better thick and creamy milkshakes to die for! Think twice with having one as a meal as they’re very filling
Average, burger was abit dry a little taste could be added by some sauces. Would rate it 4. Too much space between the table and the plane style seats.
Great food, great service and well priced for where they are and what they offer. I'd highly recommend their chocolate brownie, their burgers are amazing too 😍😍
One of my must go to places when in wellington. No better way to start a day then with a hot brown boy from Kentucky.
The fun Decor and creative seating arrangements makes for a very informal and relaxed setting. Perfect bend of American and Mexican street food washed Down with one of their perfect blended milkshakes 😘 great place to be with friends and family
The amount of times I’ve been here is insane! Their food is total mouthgasms!
My absolute fav is their chicken waffles, I could literally feast on this meal 24-7.
They do really decent milkshakes too.
Pro tip: visit them on a Wednesday as they do 2 4 1 meals!
Good food, good portions but its soooooo noisy in there....!!!!!!! I couldnt hear my friend sitting infront of me. Dinners come in groups of younger crowds with no consideration of others...eat there on a less crowded time to enjoy a decent meal. Felt like I was in a fish market, poor waiter couldnt hear my order...recommended
I have always wanted to go to Mama Brown as I've wanted to try their famous milkshakes.
I went with a friend at around 9pm on a Friday night for a late dinner.
The restaurant was very busy and noisy, so if you're wanting a quiet atmosphere, Mama Brown is not the place to go to on a Friday night.
The seating arrangement in the restaurant is rather cramped. There were a couple of times where it felt like some of the diners around us were talking over myself and my friend.
The service was excellent.
We were seen to immediately after we walked in and seated.
We were given ample time to view the menu before our order was taken.
My friend asked about the Southern Fried Steak on the Specials Board and waitress was amazing and advised my friend that the steak was more like a schnitzel, which is not what my friend wanted.
Even though it was extremely busy, we didn't wait long for our meals to arrive.
I had the Big Papa burger, small Fries and a Double Chocolate Brownie Milkshake.
The meal was very good and very filling (I was unable to finish the fries) and the shake was amazing.
However, the small serving of coleslaw that accompanied the burger was rather lacklustre and not eaten.
Despite the crowded and noisy atmosphere of Mama Brown, the service and food was excellent. I would definitely eat here again during a quieter time of the day.
I am currently visiting Wellington and Mama Brown was recommended to me through a friend.. this place is amazing! The vintage vibes give it such a rustic feel and the one man who served us was absolutely amazing!! The food was so gorgeous like there was French toast with bacon chicken salsa and cheese but it wasn’t weird it all just bloody well worked beautifully!! The peanut butter chocolate and caramel milkshake was no kidding BLOODY BEAUTIFUL!! I’d sell my first child for this shake I tell ya!!!!
Great service! Staff were friendly and the girl that bought our meal out to us had some good banter which I really appreciated! Food was of huge portions! And very tasty. We had the nachos and a small portion of cajun fries. These were both massive and between two of us we couldn't finish.
Great place to pop in and dine at. I'll be back!
I went to Mama Brown not really knowing what to expect. Last time we went it was just opened and empty. Since then it certainly has put itself on Wellingtons food map. It was buzzing. I really liked the atmosphere but a bit more room between tables would be good. Foodwise, I was impressed, I went for the chicken and waffles as I have always wanted to give it a try. I loved the combination and will be back to have the same again.
All up, a great place and we will be returning with the teen when she does something that needs a reward and a milkshake, saw them being made and they need trying.
Best Milkshakes in town! Ordered the double chocolate fudge brownie milkshake and the espresso one. It was YUMMY! We also had the waffles with caramelized bananas, the cookie monster and eggs and bacon with toast. The prices are reasonable and the size of milkshakes is HUGE.
Just went and got a couple of milkshakes with some Sals pizza, the gentleman serving us was so lovely! Didn’t catch his name but he was English. Told us the favourites in terms of milkshakes, the best places to go to enjoy it (waterfront) and even offered us their oven to heat up the pizza. I love this place so much, a must for if you’re in Wellington!
When I approached the doors of Mama Brown, I was shocked to find that they were not open at 7am on a Monday morning! In the hopes of the doors bursting open at the seams at the sight of my overwhelming breasts! But no! I was standing there for a good 25 hours in the rain on Waitangi Day! When I should've been enjoying 5 hearty chicken and waffles for my ample stomach. And in response to what your staff said, I do not need congratulating on my non-existent baby! However, upon walking in, wearing my drenched clothes from standing in the rain for over a day, I ate a delicious piece of chicken for the low low price of $45.70, all my worries were washed away! I can't wait to indulge in what I hope will be a complimentary meal on my next trip here on Christmas Day! Thanks for an amazing experience!

We went here and I ordered fish and chips which was really nice and my partner ordered chicken burger and the food was really good we loved it. 💕 we would love to comeback again.
3.5/5 Taste

3.5/5 Quantity
3/5 Customer Service
Pretty average cafe with ordinary food,
Found it quite over priced.
Customer service wasnt too great either, their atmosphere and decorations were alright but the cool looking chairs were all reserved when there was no customers at all.
Amazing service and food, felt welcome as soon as we walked in! Giant shakes that are super sweet and sickly (would probably recommend sharing if you’re getting a big meal - try the banoffee pie). Would definitely come again, we all loved their chicken; the burger and waffles ☺️ Such a cool set out and vibe as well!
Can I get a HELLLLL YEAAAAAAH. oh my god is the place good for a hangover cure, I came to mama Browns 3 times whilst I was in Wellington and I enjoyed it every single time. The hallomi burger is actually super tasty, it's a light burger and doesn't leave you falling into a food coma. The mushrooms and the cheese go so well together. The milkshakes are like a meal in itself but they are super thick, creamy and cold (Oreo one is to die for) the style of the place is super retro with aeroplane chairs to sit on- as much as I hate aeroplanes these were cool! Would highly recommend this place for anyone who enjoys a good burger and milkshake
Came to Mama Brown for lunch on a Wednesday while visiting Wellington with a couple of mates.
There were some positive aspects of Mama Brown however the experience could’ve been improved through some better service.
The food was tasty albeit a little overpriced (I ordered the fish and chips and paid $27; one could definitely find cheaper fish and chips). The service was good for quite a casual restaurant with the exception of two instances. I ordered a latte with my food which never came even after asking the waitress about the delayed latte. The fries were also inconsistently fried; some being overcooked and others undercooked. The fish was otherwise alright.
All in all a very instagrammable restaurant with decent service, but some things do let them down. Would still recommend if you want a casual lunch.
Went here for dinner last night absolutely loved it the food was amazing I got the chicken tacos and the milkshakes both were in point also the vibe of the place is dope. Also really clean and tidy and for how busy it is the service is fast and friendly.
Really good food, but overpriced for what you get. Quality is there, but the value is not. Really nice atmosphere and a brilliant ambience. Milkshakes are spectacular though!
Good place. I took a Cookie Monster and the waffle was very good. Good quality for affordable price. I recommend it. But if I may say, cup must be clean before to be used... Just a advice !
Yummy
Student deals are great $10 for a burger and fries. Shakes are real good also.

Mama brown is a good restaurant with good delicious meals.
The line out the door speaks for itself.
Chalk written menu board and the flight seats both add that something special to the restaurant.
Why I gave it a 3.5 was because of the cleanliness of the store, the service and the arrival of the food.
Our cups weren’t clean, they had floaters in them and food on the floor around us.
We arrived at the store for our 6pm reservation and placed our order by 6:10, we were told at 6:30 that there was a mix up and had to check what we order again, but said it would be made ASAP. At 6:37 our drinks arrived.
We eventually got our food at 6:43.
Wednesday is there busy night so I understand, and even though the mix up and delay in our food I will still go back.
They do need to fix their wobbly tables, this is not a long term fix.
Food was below average, friend got the chicken waffle burger and the waffle was soggy and chicken was not crispy. I got the fries with meat and cheese and they were nice. They were a side but quite pricey.
The milkshakes however are to die for, they are thick and full of flavour and massive. They actually tasted like the flavour and they include real ingredients. For example my friend got the kit Kat milkshake and it had real pieces of kit Kat in it and tasted just like one! Would come back just for the milkshakes however not the food.

Milkshakes Milkshakes Milkshakes
This place makes the best milkshakes that I've ever had. I really enjoy the chocolate peanut butter one its just like a liquid Snickers.
Such a cool place great for something different. First time I visited here I got the fish and chips, unfortunately the fish was caked in a very thick batter so was too heavy to eat. Everyone at the table who got it felt the same way and I even ended up going home sick due to how rich it was BUT I wanted to love this place. Went back for the second time and got chicken and waffles.. redeemed everything they were so good! Great brownie milkshake too my partner and I had to share it it was so big.
Super cute ambience. Colorful and seated on airplane chairs. :)
Craved waffles so we ended up here after checking the menu outside the restaurant.
Nice place to come for a date or catch up with friends.
Went on a super buzy day during a promo they were having. Had to wait as we didn't book in advance but was able to get seated quickly due to sheer luck! Food was amazing! Service was quick and informative! When paying after thw meal the Dude at the counter was humorous, good to have friendly services during such buzy time! Highly recommend to try out this place when you go to welly 😁
Really do enjoy coming here! Great service and atmosphere and delicious meals! My friend and I will always come in and get milkshakes (best part) with our meals! I love the brownie and kit kat one!!
Had a super memorable experience, amazing food and generous portions. Music was lit and staff were super cool. Very accomodating of our big loud rowdy group and the food came out promptly despite the busyness. If you want some of the best shakes in town, Mama B got you covered!
Had the chicken/waffles and chips on my trip to Mama Brown. The chips were cooked well and were not dry at all. When I had the chicken and waffles, I felt that it was better to eat them individually as opposed to together.
But in sayings that, the chicken was well cooked and moist as well as the waffles.
Good portion and ambiance - love the mini posters and airline seats. Will be coming back soon 🙃
If you love spicy food I definitely recommend the Buffalo Wings, very spicy but very delicious! If you feel like cooling down your mouth after I recommend both the Salty Goodness dessert and a milkshake, the Kit Kat is pictured but Banoffee Pie (which is semi pictured) is definitely the best!
Came here with my brother as he shouted the treat. Absolutely the best milkshakes in town!!! Ordered the Chocolate Peanut Butter & Caramel Shake and it was delicious and big. Also ordered a chicken burger which was really nice! My brother had ordered the Chicken Waffles, Choc Fudge Brownie Shake and Chilli Cheese Fries. Will need to take my partner here next!!
I had read the reviews for this place and from the pictures I saw I knew I was going to order the chicken waffle sandwich. It exceeded my expectations! From the moment we walked in, the staff were super friendly and served us promptly. I also had the coco pops shake and that was 11/10!! Would highly recommend and will definitely be back for more great food.
food wWas good and the ribs were massive but also juicy and soft. I only wish the chips came separately as they were soft hidden under the sauce of ribs. Friendly and efficient service too.
Food is good but smaller portioned burgers so order chips or a side to go with it.
Bit pricey for what you get but nice clean place and they do run a few specials throughout the week!
I personally like the Kentucky brown boy as it is very filling and has quite good flavours.
Went here on my last trip to Wellington. The staff were friendly and didn't mind my loud little 1 year old. Food was great and a very good portion for the price. Totally recommend everything on the menu especially the shakes!
The ribs were nice but not fantastic. The real highlight here is their milkshakes. These milkshakes really are the best in Wellington. Friendly owner who made us feel at home. I will happily return to eat here again.

One of my to-go cafes. You can't actually go wrong with any of their dishes!
Would 10/10 recommend to go here especially on Wednesday where they 2for1 the whole day!
Foods were delish, I once came to their Weds promo all by myself just to indulge myself with their amazing foods!
Love the ribs! It was so tender and the meat just came off from the bone like that
Love the chicken waffles! Tender, Crisp, sweet waffles, what can go wrong?
Nachos is also good! Portion-wise, they are awesome
Check out their thick milkshakes!
Came on a busy 2for1 Wednesday night.. didn't have any booking therefore needed to wait for a bit.. soon after a table was ready the waitstaff quickly cleaned everything with a smile :)
Ordered waffles with fried chicken, French toast with fried chicken, and a double chocolate fudge milkshake.
LOVING the food.. ADORE the milkshake. Food portion was great and tasty.
Overall it was a great experience.. all of the staff were very friendly (even though it was hectic!) and good food :)

I had waffles & they were delicious! Peppermint tea was divine. The staff were warm & welcoming, the atmosphere was quite lovely. Love the decor, especially the furniture & props on the walls & ceiling.
I went to this restaurant on the early January. During the trip of Wellington, this meal was the best we had in Wellington. Affordable price and very yummy. l was so satisfied with a big beef burger (with egg and beacon). Classical America style and good atmosphere as well. Definitely want to come back again.
l saw some people ordered a big drink and not sure what it was. l want to try it if l visited Wellington again. Interestingly, some colorful lanterns were hang on the ceiling. As an Asian, l felt that it embraced culture and diversity. In short, love here.
If you want not so healthy but out of this world delicious food then this is the place for you. Everything I've tried here has been outstanding. Big thumbs up to the milkshakes - they have a new special flavour every week! Staff have always been friendly but beware - this place fills up QUICK on the weekends (for good reason).
Loved this place! We came in late afternoon on a Saturday and shared the chicken wings and BBQ ribs. They were super delicious.
We need to try some of those awesome looking milkshakes!
Big eats, cheap price tag. Thats what you get on a 2 for 1 wednesday from 11 till 11. I ordered the ribs and my dining companion had the Kentucky Got Brown Boy (southern fried chicken with cheese and bacon a top french toast) plus an oreo milkshake. The milkshake was large (at $8.90 I'd hope so) The dish lacked flavour and the chicken quite dry. The ribs however were succulent, tender and full of flavour. Recommend booking if you want to come here on a Wednesday night. The place was pumping!

Stopped in here a couple of weeks ago after an 8 hour drive from Auckland. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal, I had the vegetarian breakfast burrito and a soda float which was really delicious, service was quick & the atmosphere was really cool. Would recommend this place for brunch 👌🏼
An amazing experience for me as an Aucklander. I ordered a chicken and beef burger, and the beef was cooked amazing - not overdone, and still juicy and succulent. The chicken was great as well. Our group also had Cajun fries on the side with Aioli, which complemented it well.
The milkshakes are superb as well! I tried a kit kat milkshake, which was incredible. Although on the pricey side, I really recommend this to people to try.
Incredibly good comfort food and amazing shakes. We had Cajun fries, chicken waffle, breakfast burrito, peanut caramel shake and a float. All excellent and very filling. I highly recommend you visit Mama Brown's.
Waffles and fried chicken... what could go wrong!
Love this place, while not the most classy of places it is tasty! I'm yet to find something on the menu that I don't like, but fried chicken and waffles is my ultimate fav - sometimes the cravings are to strong to resist.
The milkshakes boozy and non boozy are some of the best in Wellington! Nom
Only downside is that I'm always super full from the large meals I'm yet to try desert 😊
Been here a couple of times now, some experiences were great others not so much, I had they're southern Chicken burger and it was ok, nothing special but their waffles were amazing! Staff definitely seemed cocky but that doesn't change much. The main question is, would i go there again? The answer is yes, Happily :D
Great food. Awesome seats and decor. Great service. I had chicken and waffles which was strangely awesome. I would have liked the waffles a bit crunchier though. The food looks just like the picture which is nice. The staff were kind, funny and well workers. It didn't take long for our food to arrive. Their milkshakes are so good and so creative. I had a Chocolate, penutbutter, caramel kitkat one. And the prices are reasonable.
The place is full any time you drive past, but once you enter, the hostess attends to you straight away. The table are shared, but the food is amazing. Very good coffees as well. It's Mexican with an American/Texan twist. Desserts were also worth trying.
Love the bustling environment of this place. The staff were nice and helpful and responded to requests well. The Oreo cheesecake shake was pretty damn good apart from some salty bits. The southern fried chicken on French toast was good! Would be better if the chicken was more crispy though and maybe a side of spicy sauce instead of tomato sauce. My friends said the halloumi burger was really good but didn't fill him up and the halloumi salad was also really nice. Overall nice vibe good vibe but some things a bit overpriced
Went here last night for a catch up with friends. We didn't have a booking and it was pretty busy but the staff were great and found us a table. Loved the Southern fried chicken and the fries were crispy and tasty. Generous portions, friend had the ribs and said they were awesome too. Bonus to see that they stock Kereru beers and have them on tap. We shared a milkshake between two for dessert - amazing but very filling! Loved the decor and aeroplane seats, staff were friendly and attentive. Will be back :)
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and good portions. Would definitely eat here again. They have 2 for 1 main meals on Wednesdays and great looking milkshakes and desserts! The fried chicken on French toast was filling. Great amount of hot chips.
Me and my partner Went here on a whim when we saw the birthday deal and so glad we did. Great atmosphere and music- favourite place we have been to atmosphere wise. He had the bbq pork ribs and he loved it, so tender and they came away from the bone so easily. I had the Nachos and they were good but nothing I would rave about. The milkshake I had however was amazing and definitely big enough for 2. A great place to stop if you love milkshakes, great music and a chill atmosphere. Pretty funky decor too.
It was a nice and cosy restraunt especially in wellingtons cold weather, the food was great and the prices were worth the dish. Me and my wife enjoyed it very much and will be dining there again in the future Plum Mairaro
My second time here, but my first time was a long time ago, so I felt it was due for a review!
Came in and sat ourselves, the place is spacious and quirky, especially due to their usage of airplane seats as chairs. It took a while for us to get served and we had to walk up to the counter to get the waitresses' attention. However, the service for the rest of the night was fabulous.
We ordered a burger with beef patty and their famous Southern fried chicken, an Oreo dirty milkshake with kahlua and baileys, a mojito, and a warm chocolate brownie.
The fried chicken was amazing--tender and crispy in all the right places, and the beef patty was also surprisingly good. It was surprisingly filling for what looked like a small portion.
The milkshake was really good too, creamy and decadent all at the same time. The mojito was a tad disappointing because there was hardly any taste of alcohol.
Last but definitely not least, the warm brownie was super divine. It came with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, and chocolate syrup, and it was a feast for the eyes and palette. For some, it might be overly sweet but if you have a sweet tooth then this will be perfect for you.
Showstopper: Food checked all the boxes: satisfying, great to look at, even greater to eat.
Overall grade: A-
Have come here plenty of times for work lunches and the sliders are always yummy. They make awesome milkshakes here as well, I always get the classic chocolate one but it is amazing ! The service is great and on time - I have no fault!
Omg, what an awesome find. Arrived in Wellington last night. Arrived here for breakfast, in a hurry and they were brilliant. Awesome waffles and Paul loved his breakfast burrito. Off we went but came back for lunch. The ribs were mouthwatering and dirty milkshakes left you wanting more. Can't go back tonight, that would be just sad. Highly recommend this to anyone new to Wellington.
The search for the ultimate hungover brunch continues. Mama Browns definitely impressed me. I got a breakfast burrito and some Cajun fries. THE FRIES WERE EXCELLENT they were just the way I like them and crinkle cut as well. The burrito was really big and sort of nice but halfway through I realised I should've got one of those thick waffles with the whipped cream. Overall I'm pretty impressed but haven't found perfection yet
Great meal from here, plus very good coffee. Went for breakfast and had a good selection from the menu. Service was prompt and friendly, meal was generously sized and good value. Different decor, some of the seats are from airplanes. Not that comfortable but good for a change.
Came here with a friend on a Thursday night while visiting Wellington. One thing I noticed straight away is the deco especially the airline seating which is creative (wish I can buckle up and being served from airplane trays). He ordered the Brown Boy and I ordered the Ribs, both with Peanut Butter Milkshakes. Have to say, my portion of the ribs does out size the Brown Boy by a margin. Meat was soft and flavorful, but I had better ribs elsewhere. The milkshakes was a highlight of the dining experience and I can see how addictive it can be. Would recommend the place as it is something unique and overall I enjoyed my dining experience there and accompanied by friendly staff.
Came here because 10 year old was craving waffles, and I just knew they would have good sized ones. Ordered extra bacon and southern friend chicken sides on top of the waflles. Also had southern fried chicken tacos, choc peanut butter milkshakes, good for the occasional treat for kids (and me!)
Funky decor, quick and friendly service. Food is exceptionally decadent. Ribs are absolutely to die for- cooked to perfection, meat just falling off the bones, and there's plenty of it too. Wings could be better, not the most flavorful (personally I like everything drowning in either spices or sauce). Fries and shakes were also exceptional- fries were crunchy and hot, shakes were perfectly flavoured. Definitely check it out when you're keen for a good 2 for 1 joint on Wednesday.
Walking past this morning it was hard to ignore airplane seats, Chinese lanterns and old movie posters, all decorating an American diner style tv set for "happy Days" - sans Fonz.
There ain't no bagels here anymore honey - cos this is someone weird's idea of what the south is like. Quite why I have no idea. But this morning I felt for the first time that I wasn't really part of the intended demographic. Grunge yes but mama brown no.
Southern fried chicken and waffles, Po boys, and a whole section devoted to fries, as well as their specialty - milkshakes. Essentially everything that appeals to adolescents who are impossible to cook for at home.
Feeling our age we simply had a hot chocolate and a flat white. Both were actually good. The cups were noticeably different from the run of the mill Acme. The hot chocolate wasn't ordinary but had an interesting taste - no marshmallows however!!!!!
The coffee's flavour was good too - it tasted like coffee - but texturally it was on the bubbly side, in keeping with the observation that the barista (who was very nice) didn't remember what the coffee was.
As we drank we watched a group of 20 somethings devour massive plates of food in seconds and a middle aged couple tentatively sussing out the possibility of a soy latte, but declining to stay, knowing that they too were not in the right demographic.
I prefer my drinks not milky and with alcohol so I didn't try what they are the most famous for: their milkshakes, but they did have an extended selection. Instead I went for an orange juice and some delicious waffles with maple syrup and I topped it up with vanilla ice cream and bacon. The waffles were tasty and a bit crunchy but not too much so perfect combination. However, paying an extra for bacon and only having one slice of it ripped in two to make you think it's more is sneaky. If I ask for an extra bacon i expect to have an extra bacon. The place is well located close to both markets and on Wakefield and is quite chill (they have airplanes seats, how cool is that?!).
I will go back for a burger some day !
This place is fantastic! The food was Devine. Best milkshakes ever - at $8 it is soooo worth it. I had the caramel, peanut and it honestly tasted like I was drinking a snickers bar! It was soo good. I ordered the famous chicken and waffles and - ohh! Its like dessert and dinner at the same time. It was fairly priced too. My hubby ordered Mama's plate for Papa @$32 and that had a bit of everything. He loved it. The atmosphere is very relaxing and inviting. I loved the airplane seats, my daughter had so much fun with the fancy dress box and she ate her whole meal, which rarely happens with her, as she is quite fussy. We left that place with our belly full and 100% satisfied with the amazing customer service. Because we were a large group, I asked for a couple of jugs of juice and coke, but was told they sell drinks individually. Upon leaving the owner had said he may take on the idea of having jugs for large groups as he had never been asked before, so that was a bonus! I am looking forward to going back there again.
VENUE (0.5 / 1)
The venue isnt too bad, quite cosy. Myself and my partner sat on what seemed like ex-commercial plane seats. I enjoyed the novelty of it. Not really much to explain as it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. What you expect from a modern diner
SERVICE (1 / 1)
Probably the best thing about this place. We had excellent service where they actually seemed interested in you and just genuinely nice, the type of people that should be on hospitality. Big thumbs up here.
FOOD (3 / 3)
I have tried their big papa burger and the choc brownie milk shake. I really enjoyed the burger - bread was fresh, chicken nicely fried, beef cooked well. I would have liked more cheese and slightly more aoli but otherwise enjoyable. Milkshake nice and chocolatey with actual choc brownies in the mix. Note they are not the quickest dishing out food (when I have been there, could be just bad luck) but didn't really bother me.
OVERALL
Give it a go, not a huge extensive menu but great choices and good generous meals.
*score given in reference to target market*
Good weekend brunch
Taco and sliders and small sides.
A beer on a sunny day. Even early evening snacks and drinks is a pleasure
love the aeroplane seats.
Went there as a group of four. We love the atmosphere and the plane seats! I loved my brownies, my friend enjoyed her sundae (if you are a sweet tooth you are going to enjoy this). Tasted my friend's fries but not into it (i am fussy and the skin on puts me off) but my friend finished hers without any complaint so it must just have been me. Overall, we enjoyed our time there. The staff was nice too.
Mama Brown is a casual venue with an American style menu. I chose the Kentucky Hot Brown Boy which was a unique dish – chicken with other elements on a savoury French toast. I really liked it and it made for a lovely lightish lunch.
Pops of colour, chalkboards, fairy lights and cheery staff give Mama Brown a friendly, fun vibe that is cool and casual. While we were there, on a Friday from brunch to lunch time, there were couples, friends and babies- and the venue and vibe catered to all. The staff do their jobs well, giving just enough attention that you're not neglected but not swaddled.
We were in for brunch, and ordered the big breakfast, BLT and pancakes. The big breakfast had the works and for me, it was done right- bacon was crispy, poached eggs had firm whites and runny yolks, tomato wasn't too mushy and the giant portobello mushroom was a plus! A few elements were under seasoned- but that's a minor issue, and what the salt and pepper is for. The BLT came out in club form, the bacon was generous and my brunch buddy demolished it- so I guess we can take that as a good sign! A special mention to the garlic aioli which tied it all together.
But, there's a simple reason why I keep coming back for brunch... The pancakes! Every now and again, and probably more often than not, I get that craving for light and fluffy, but still thick, substantial pancakes and Mama Brown hits the spot. Dusted with icing sugar and with a little jug of maple syrup on the side; it's simple and simply delicious.
Overall, Mama Brown is a no-fuss place with a focus on good food and good service. Prices are very fair and you are sure to leave full and happy.
Buffalo wingssssss!!!
They aren't for the faint-hearted. I was sweating profusely as I happily took bite after bite.
The Cajun chips were a surprise!!! My kids loved them!
It's value for your money.
The service though... It took awhile for our waitress to take our order. It came to a point that we wondered whether we should go to the front to order.
Went for lunch with a friend, ordered the po boy - pork. Well for 15 what a feed, done was good and hearty and plenty of it even got chips and a salad great value.
However my friend who had the sliders was disappointed with their quantity, he got 2 for 12 and let's just say my $15 plate had about 3 times the food
Love this place! Fantastic service, everything was fairly quick. Great drinks, the mains were great, perfect sizes, and the desserts were too. Only downside was that the Cajun fries were overly-flavoured. Nice location and the place has a friendly atmosphere. Would definitely come back :)
I went to Mama Brown recently for a friend's birthday party. Initially, I had been disappointed, as we were meant to be going to another favourite restaurant of mine and sadly that restaurant was booked out. I hadn't considered going to Mama Brown before - it's on Wakefield Street, a little bit away from the "main drag" for restaurants in Wellington. However, I can now say that Mama Brown is well worth the 100 metre or so amble down from Courtney Place and there was absolutely no reason to be disappointed!
Mama Brown has made some interesting decor choices- curiously, some of the seats look like they have been taken from an aeroplane and have been set up as booths. I guess it's one way to get cheap seats!
We were with a large group and were placed in the middle of the room. I ordered the Corona Frozen Margarita and the Fried Chicken on Rice Waffles. I felt a little bit weird about the Corona Frozen Margarita, but I can honestly say that it was delicious and so refreshing! A truly great combo. The Frozen Margarita comes with the Corona bottle tipped upside down into the drink and you can therefore control how much Corona goes into the mix. I would say that it's almost like a Mexican shandy - delicious! Don't go past it. The Fried Chicken Waffles reminded me of a similar dish served at another Wellington "Tex Mex" institution. They were also delicious - you can't really go wrong with a combination of deep fried deliciousness and maple syrup.
The service was good and in spite of us being a large group, our meals were served at roughly the same time and were all piping hot.
I would definitely return to Mama Brown and recommend it to others!
Dinner at Mama Brown on Friday night was great - I had the pulled pork tortilla, very tasty, lovely crispy base and enough to get my husband to help out with when he'd finished his Southern chicken. The restaurant is light and bright and funky with its colourful airline seats. Plenty of room between tables so you don't feel you're sharing your dinner with everyone around you. The staff are efficient, friendly and helpful. First visit and out-of-town diners, we were very impressed, to the extent of returning the next day for lunch. This time I had a chicken slider and steak tostada, while he chose the pulled pork baguette which came with slaw and the crispiest fries we've had in a long time. More than enough food and great value. Our new favourite restaurant in Wellington.
I visited Mama Brown on a Wed night with 3 of my friends and had a great time. We only had an hour to eat before a show so we informed them of that - we were told 'not a problem' and it certainly wasn't.
The food came fairly quickly after we ordered and was hot and cooked very well. We had the prawns to start and the flavour was great - a very different spicy take on a classic. I can recommend the BBQ pork ribs and I rate them as the tenderest that I have ever had - the meat fell off the bone and were succulent and tasty! A friend of mine had the southern fried buttermilk chicken - there was nothing left on the plate after he had finished.
The restaurant is a casual fun affair and if you like the southern/mexican/texmex style of food then get involved with this place - I will most certainly be back
Was sitting in Lower Hutt reading the reviews and looking at the menu and couldn't wait. So myself and 3 workmates made the trip in. We were not dissapointed. I had the pulled pork slider, the chicken slider, and the spicy fish taco. Wow, this was just what I had been looking for. Fresh ingredients with a good hit of flavour. Workmates had the po-boys and they were raving about them as well. Service was fast and friendly. Looking forward to going back to try the dinner menu!
I LOVE this place. My partner and I have been here half a dozen times since it opened, and it has been consistently good food for good value.
Both of the fish tacos are amazing, as is the vegetable one. I love the mix and match ability of the slider/taco menu, it gives the place a real tapas feel. And the addition of a liquor license is pretty awesome too.
Nice light atmosphere. I reckon a bit of art work on the walls and it would be a rocking local bar/cafe/great food hangout.
Great food. Great staff. I have eaten here many times and the breakfast burrito is amazing. Coffee is excellent Delighted we found this gem for brunch with friends. I highly recommend this place if you fancy some good eats
Great service! We went in with a deal voucher, management were super helpful and friendly, the food was fast, fresh and delicious - we will be back =) (we even got a fist bump). Highly recommend the Mexican beer!
Went in for breakfast and coffee, as it wasn't too busy. The coffee was excellent, with a complimentary biscotti balanced on the mug. I even ordered another, unusual for me. The poached eggs which I ordered soft, were a little hard, but no matter. On crusty toast with a triangle of real butter all was in order. At least it wasn't pre-wrapped butter cubes! My pet hate. Looking at others' meals I will return to try the tacos. Think it is a good addition to the eat scene in Wellington. Lovely sitting in the sun filled room. Attentive service and they are making an effort. The cafe was full when I left so word is spreading.
Totally awesome menu with a tasty range of breakfasts and lunches with a Western and Mexican influence. Food, service and prices all excellent! My new favourite diner in Wellington :)
This place is great! My partner and I have visited a few times since they opened, and my only complaint would be that the portions are huge but the food is so good that I can't help but finish my plate. The milkshakes are a nice novelty, too.
Had the beef stew/soup and beef taco on Sunday.
Both were delicious! Especially the beef taco with the lime and the pineapple salsa. Definitely would get another one (maybe 3) of those next time.
Attentive service, average toilets.
GREAT milkshakes!! :D
Small portions for food prices, however.
Had the Beef stew. AMAZING! Will def be back for the bowl of the day, came with some chunky toast bread. This was a great winter warmer. Going back again for bowl of the day and maybe a Taco. 5 star YUM.
The absolute best thing about Mama Brown's is their $6 sliders and tacos which allow you to mix and match a variety of options to build your own meal.
We ordered the prawn taco, spicy fish taco, beef slider and chicken slider as well as the open chicken/bacon/mozzarella sandwich and a serving of fries.
All were absolutely delicious. The prawn taco was a standout, filled with juicy well-seasoned prawns and the triple cooked fries were incredible.
Service was attentive but not overbearing.
Only slight let down was the "fresh" orange juice wasn't (Keri from a bottle) but it was a minor blip. We're already planning our next visit to work through the rest of the menu.
Didn't know what to expect from the place but the staff were amiable and friendly, my food delivered promptly and coffee delivered with a totally yummy hokey pokey biscotti. I got the vegetarian tacos and they were wonderful, having just toured Southern America last year, these were the most rustic and authentic thing I've had in Wellington since returning. Will definitely return, would love to see this cafe develop the whole 'candy' theme they already are on the border of having with their multi-coloured decor!
We need a Mama Brown in HB. Meals are big and delicious & excellent customer service, free meal and complimentary drink for your bday. Definitely be going back again.
Music was a little loud but I am hard of hearing. Food and service was incredible. Great way to celebrate a birthday!
Celebrated my birthday here and got the birthday promo for June! It was a special day indeed! I love the Dirty Waffles and enjoyed the other food as well. Definitely coming back to try other food!
If you are after comfort food - say burgers, wings , shakes, curly fries - then Mama Brown should be at the top of your list. This is my go to place for a cheat meal. Be sure to Walk-in hungry and you will walk out full and satisfied. Quirky ambience, friendly staff and Outstanding food. The spicy wings served here is definitely one of the best in NZ. Highly recommended this place.
The service was great, the staff were friendly and efficient. The food is bit on the pricey side but for its size it is justifiable. We came in during their deals so we got a meal for free. I recommened the big mama feed of you want to try a lil bit of everything. The space is small but it's a great location.
This is my 3rd time , and not surprised is another great experience in Mama Brown.
We ordered the Pork Ribs and Waffle Boy.
All the food are nice and the portions are pretty big. Is worth to have a fry in Mama Brown. And because is my Birthday so I’m lucky to have a FREE MEAL (Mama Brown Birthday Treat Event)
Visited this evening en route to the airport, welcoming staff and warm atmosphere.
Quick turn around with delivery of food and we were able to utilise our student discounts also which was handy!
Asian female staff member was bomb! Thanks so much girl!
Sitting at the airport eating our food, and although it's still good it would have been even better! Highly recommend Mama Brown's
Came in for a quick lunchtime bite, great service I can thoroughly recommend their Vanilla Milkshake and Chicken Burger, go for the extra pickles, they’re sublime A***
Lovely atmosphere, cool interior and great service. We (3 friends and I) went for the Wednesday 2 for 1 deal, and had a great time. The food portions are huge, and absolutely delicious. We shared 2 plates between 4 of us as well as 2 milkshakes, and the waitress was more than happy to split both the food and milkshakes in half, which was very much appreciated. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and overall amazing experience. We even split the bill between 4 of us and it worked out to $17.25 per person, which we thought was great value for what we had. Make sure to follow these guys on their socials to keep up with all the latest deals. Absolutely great place, love it 🥰👍 Will 100% be coming again.
Loved it.
The philly cheese steak was great and the fries nice and crispy.
Pretty decent food served here and is a solid for quality. Would like to Poe Boys on the menu, the current menu still holds weight.
The American Breakfast washed down with a margarita was banging!
Lovely customer service. Friendly staff always greeted with a smile. Food was wonderful. The milkshakes are to die for!! I wish I could give more stars! Thank you for the wonderful experience, will definitely be coming back again soon.
Our first visit - glad I chose this place for our pre-show early dinner. Easy to pre-book online - refreshingly, without dooming myself to daily marketing emails. 😃 Happy with the prices for the type and amount of food. Excellent service from attentive, competent, and pleasant wait-staff. Decor is pretty standard Americano-retro, but not overdone. Background music was unobtrusive - also very refreshing! Food was very tasty, well prepared, and served promptly. Excellent fries! The ribs were seasoned just right, and cooked to fall-apart perfection. Chicken wings were tangy and crisp. Dirty Bird burger got big love from a burger fanatic - though the hashbrown layer was unexpected. Salads were fresh and flavourful, if a bit predictable - personally I'd prefer more greenery and fewer chips. Our first-time try of a Philly cheesesteak found it only "okay". All of us found our serving sizes a bit too big. Good range of drinks - the cookies-and-cream dirty sundae went down *very* nicely, I'm told. Overall, will happily go back - and likely order a smaller option.
Food was great big portion size & dessert pay to share it as it's big size.
Food is okay, but fried chicken is quite dry and bland. Wouldn't come unless I am really craving for American food.
The best place for youngsters who wants to eat a lot of good yummy food. Its just near the cuba street.
The portions are quite large for chicken wings, pork ribs and even milkshakes you get very large size.
Also of you follow their instagram page you can get occasional coupons every month on offers like one plus one mostly on Wednesdays.
Absolutely love the food. Great place to go if you like big massive feed 🙂🙂🙂
