One of the best Cheap Eats if you're hankering for some fried noodles. My go to every time is the Mee Goreng (how can you say no at $10?) which is always hot and delicious. Staff are friendly and easy to deal with. Limited interior seating, but more seating outside and it is located down Left Bank (off of Cuba St) so a bit more quiet even during the lunch and dinner rush.
The. Quintessential dining place for the VUW student. Went back yesterday, seven years after graduating and it's still just as good as I remember. Can't go wrong with the Mee Goreng ππ
Friendly staff, fast service, cheap food made great. Would definitely revisit!
Friendly staff and efficient service. We went to Welly for few days and was looking for a nice Malaysian place with reasonable price. We are so glad we decide to try the food there. Ordered satay (beef and chicken), roti, seafood laksa and Sambal chicken. Really like the food.. would say they are more on the sweet side in terms of seasoning not spicy. Come and give it a try, looks like they are popular amongst the locals too, saw many office people drop by for lunch.

OK so I was asked a question the other day. Would you rather work at Wagamamas for a million dollars an hour or work at the Kingdom for free cleaning tables. I looked at the person who asked the question and said, "Mate I hope that is rhetorical." This is honestly hands down the best most authentic Malaysian cuisine in the country if not the world. I go into the restraint, don't even look at the menu and order the straight up roti Chennai. The best Chennai in the land, the spices and creamy sauce runs down my throat and touches my heart. Coupled with the soft, luxurious roti and tangy peanut sauce i honestly could not ask for anything else in life except this. I no longer view the staff as ordinary restaurant staff, but as my family. They are always there smiling away, passionately serving the customers. I'd just like to say thank you Satay Kingdom, tears are dripping on my keyboard as we speak and I can already taste the roti Chennai I will indulge myself with this afternoon. Love Cholley.
I love Satay Kingdom! I tell anyone who wants a cheap meal with hearty food to hit up S.K
I've settled on one meal and one meal alone...Noynoya chicken. It's so good, I dream about it! Ive been going here about 4 years and in the last couple of months though (I always get it takeaway) they have filled the container almost 3 parts rice, 1 part chicken & veg. It's totally gutterd me! I travel a long way to get it and I always will come back but maybe sit in and dine - they give you way more.
Every Wellington students memory would have a space for Satay Kingdom. All these years this place still maintain the quality of their food and most importantly----student friendly price.
My favorites are the Curry Laksa with Roti and the fried noodles..
The situation of the cafe is unique to Wellington too.. down the end of a quite but boutique style complex at the middle of Cuba St.
I love this place, cheap and worth it. Can get a really simple feed of roti and peanut sauce for $3.50 and it's like a great time. Satay Kingdom is essentially my second home and it's just the place to be!
Hands down the best. Fast and prompt service, food is always amazing and so reasonably priced. Restaurant is smaller and isn't really designed for dining in, but they can have a takeaway roti chenai ready for you within ten minutes tops. I'm struggling to find anywhere that does it better.
This was one of my favourite spots to eat when I was studying in Wellington!
It is cheap and worth your money.
All their food was delicious especially their Roti Chanai! Their fried rice and fried noodles was also good. It was always packed here, mostly students.
Now when I visit Wellington I always come here! It's my fave spot for cheap eat.
Great spot for a cheap, cheerful meal. Friendly staff and good food. I had the chicken curry which was flavoursome but a bit watery, could have been thickened-up a bit. The roti here is pretty good too. It's amazing how much food you get for your buck here. I will definitely be back :)
Every student in Wellington knows about this joint and for a very good reason. Cheap, fast, and tasty. Brilliant Bang for Buck dishes like Roti Chanai and mi goreng make it oh so popular. I kinda feel this place is the lifeline for the other eateries within the vicinity. I.e it drip feeds clients to the other neighbouring eateries if there aren't any tables left. Keep up the good work Satay Kingdom. I'll be back for my Mi goreng fix soon.
Amazing food and even better customer service! Changed my order in the last minute and the owner had no problem whatsoever, he even let me off the extra cost. Very satisfied customers.
The Six buck fifty Roti Chanai. THE BEST in Wellington. Ridiculously tasty. Crazy cheap. I go the chicken variant, although lamb and vege equally awesome. Nothing else needs to be said really. So cheap, so awesome. Been coming here for years. Love this place, don't go changing.
If you just like great food at outrageously cheap prices for the taste feast you receive, and are not fussed on decor, then this place is a must in Wellington.
It was a favourite of mine when I lived there, and is a must do whenever I'm back in the best city in the world.
The stand out for me are the roti's. They are the best I have ever eaten outside of Asia. Choose anything from their menu and I guarantee you will wonder why food that tastes so great, and is served so fast, doesn't cost more to buy?
If you're not a hob nob snob type then you can look past the decor and pigeons flapping about in the outdoor seating area and just enjoy the fabulous flavours your taste buds are going nuts over.
Popular with the student crowd (so you know you must be getting a great deal) as much as the locals - if you haven't been here yet, go there ASAP!
One of our favourite cheap eats in Wellington.
Everything we have here is great - my favourite is the seafood laksa.
We have had guests from all over the world eat here and the last visitors from New York absolutely loved the food after being a bit worried about the tables outside.
The plus side - great food, cheap and fast
The minus side - seating inside is very limited and outside is bit hit and miss with the tables, weather and pigeons.
We keep going back - week after week, year after year and the food is consistently great.
Sensational food, really generous portions. I found service to be great too. Eat-in seating has its own Cuba st-ish charm. I go there at least once a week. Highly recommended.
Popped in for a quick lunch, had the satay chicken, with a roti, it came out super fast, maybe 4-5 minutes after ordering. Now that can be a bit disconcerting, but the flavours were incredible, complex, and delicious. The Roti was perfect. The prices were reasonable, and I will keep going back to this crazy little place. As others have said, it's not really comfortable, it's pokey and dirty looking, and no one wants to sit outside in left bank unless your a smoker, or like pigeons..... No one likes pigeons. But go for the food, the food is really good.
Good big portions very reasonably priced. Its actually pretty cheap for what u get & quality is good too. Its not overly oily or cheap in taste. Just ignore the surroundings. Its a good takeaway. Like it will be back. The service is OK. Can not expect too much from takeaway places but they were polite enough.
Best place to have lunch, their #10 is the best! Very decent portion sizes and quick service. Surroundings are a bit grotty with pigeon crap everywhere, but the food is sooo worth it, and you can always takeaway to avoid the unsightly environment. Their roti is to die for- the best!
Cheap as hell and the surroundings reflect that, but their food is amazing.
Cheap, delicious. This little spot on Leftbank the most delicious Malaysian food! It is really cheap too. You get fantastic value for money and probably expected value for money when it comes to service but who cares when it's so cheap. Probably wouldn't dine in with all the pigeon poop around but takeaway fantastic and you can phone order ahead and swing your car round to the back of Farmers for a quick pitstop and walk through to Leftbank. Really nice drinks in the fridge too! Best roti - yum yum!
Have been going to this place for about 10 years now, food is always great value and so tasty. Try the chicken satays or roti or nasi kampong, or kam pong chicken, all highly recomended!
Always delicious, always fast and always very generous portions. Satay kingdom (and it's BYO partner Oriental Kingdom: across the alleyway and run by the same people) is a place where my friends and I often frequent. It isn't fancy but it is always a good time :)
Satay Kingdom is the best value for money food in Wellington, period. Their roti chanai is a brilliant appetiser and their chicken mi goreng is awesome. The portions are generous, the above two dishes usually feed both me and my partner quite comfortably.
Tastiest food this side of Malaysia. Cheap and cheerful and frickin' tasty as!
This place is great if you want taste over service - the prices are great but every time i have been the waiting staff are barely pleasant and really dont care. Make sure you double check your order before paying as a slight pronunciation changes your chicken to vegetarian in their minds and they wont fix the problem!
However best Roti in wgtn and cheapest option around. Their Roti Chenai is awesome!
I love this little place. It is nothing fancy in the way of atmosphere or service but the meals are delicious, cheap and large.
Pick your times wisely as it can often be very busy. Sometimes the meals are variable probably due to different cooks but I have only been disappointed once or twice with my expectations.
Mee Goring and the Chicken Curry with roti are personal favourites.
Good, cheap food. Very large portions.
Satay Kingdom is a weekly occurrence for the fam bam, never lets you down. Best dishes for me are the Roti Chanai, Noyonya Chicken and you cant go past the Mee Gorengπ₯π₯
Been here a couple times, always great, decided to order off Uber Eats for once... Selected my food and Vanilla Coke and went to submit order. Before completing i decided to actually take the coke off the order, but i left a note accidently asking for what type of drink i wanted because Uber dosen't do this for whatever reason. When the driver get close to my house i realised that my note was still on the order. The driver arrived, package in hand, and the Vanilla coke was there poking out in all her glory!!!!! Workers had kindly left the drink in the order! 5/5, would recommend
Found on the Left Bank off Cuba St in Wellington this iconic dining establishment never fails to deliver excellent tasty food at excellent prices. I spent less for my Roti Chennai Chicken meal than I would have for a meal at McDs and the food is soooo much better. The service is quick and delivered with a smile. Been coming here for more than 15 years, great place!!
3pm in Wellington and nothing open except for this tiny space which serves noodle salad. A new combo for me but to my surprise was really tasty. And the price is absolutely cheap. Really happy with this new discovery.
This is such a special place in my heart to go have a sit down inside or outside. Me and my son went back to Satay Kingdom Cafe after 9 years use to dine there all the time with my son and daughter when we were living in wgtn. The owners are lovely people and the food is excellent and yummy it was so lovely to go back after all these years to see the owners are still there just can't beat there food thank you Satay Kingdom π your the best π and they do deserve 5+stars β¨ββ¨
Ordered Satay Kingdom through Menulog and was disappointed when Menulog never delivered my order! On pickup, Satay Kingdom went above and beyond and made me a fresh order, even throwing in a free drink! I am so appreciative, food was great too, don't walk, RUN to Satay Kingdom because they the best <33333
Quick and friendly, even on a very busy Friday night. Reasonably priced and huge portions, easily got two meals out of a single main.
The fish tasted a little old, but to be expected for the price. Wat tan hor is life
Yum food, and can't beat the price. You'll be wearing your puffer jacket if you eat there though - there's no hearing and the door's always open.
Love this place! Good cheap food with fast service and loads of flavour.
Not as cheap as it used to be unfortunately but still nice food and cheerful. Always open. Used it for years and I've never been ill or anything.
Decent food for a great price. Very good value, especially for the portion size.
Delicious Malaysian food in a tiny side street cafe. I tried the Chicken Nyonya with an extra side of Satay sauce, both of which were wonderful and a good portion size too.
Mmmm yummy satay burger mmmmmmm π
Good food and budget friendly. Kids loved their meals. Lots of flavour and a real tummy filler. Great portions.
Food is good, I liked the noodles πππ
One of my favourite places to go to. I got taken there on a date the other week and the food was so good that we went back for breakfast the next day. Now we are going there for Valentine's Day. Amazing food, great customer service and great price. I was even scraping the last residue of the peanut sauce. Looking forward to my next visit.
the food is really good and the atmosphere is good aswell
