Took a detour to Island Bay (in WLG) and since we were hungry, we stumbled a neat little cafe called @floydscafe. They are a local cafe cantered in the shopping area and serve brunch dishes, coffee/tea ☕️, shakes🥤, cakes 🍰, + many more nibbles.
Cheese 🧀 + Date/Orange 🍊Scones $8.50
I and the old man enjoyed both scones, good portion size, heated and served with butter 🧈. The cheese scone was soft and had enough cheese in each bite. In addition, the sweet/citrus taste from the orange rind was enjoyable and just enough to not overpower the dates. Definitely will consider adding orange the next time we make our homemade scones.
Blueberry Thrills Smoothie🥤$5
First impressions, the smoothie was thinner + less creamy than a typical thickshake/milk smoothie. But that is fine as it is dairy-free and uses soy milk. The sweetness was not too sickly and it made it easier for me to taste the banana 🍌 + blueberry mix. I also love the touch of spirulina to add more protein and vitamins to the smoothie. Great job guys, good size for the price that you pay.
Florentine 🍳🍞 $17
Toast was made just right and the melted butter made the bread softer to bite into. Loved the lemony, creamy taste from the hollandaise sauce, went well with the poached eggs/runny yolk 🍳 and the sauteed spinach. Can't complain about the taste and price point, good job.
Final Words
Whether it is takeaway or dine-in, this small cafe offers a simple, but relaxed vibe with neat NZ artwork 🖼 + knick-knacks and are enjoyed by locals or Wellingtonians. Definitely enjoyed my brunch and recommend for you to check this place out if you are in the Island Bay area.
In deepest darkest Island Bay, between the strange car parking configuration, push chairs, boho chic residents and funky niche stores, is Floyd's.
This isn't somewhere you'd venture to from my side of town (Ngaio) as it is out of the way from the lure of the central city but if you are looking to take a wee Sunday drive and head somewhere new, try this place.
It is popular with the locals and I can see why. The food portions are huge, decently priced with lots of variety for visitors of all creatures great and small. There is a huge cabinet selection that also caters for all with the Little Vanilla Cupcakes appealing to a number of the young folk that were there with Mums and Dads.
I have had coffee here before and it's decent. Supreme is the brand they use and it hits the spot, especially early on a Sunday.
The staff are lovely. Looks like they know their regulars and the person behind the counter apologised that I had to wait a couple of minutes when it clearly wasn't her fault that the person in front of me was ordering half the cabinet.
The atmosphere is really family friendly. There are plenty of tables big and small, a kids play area, and room for the aforementioned push chair. I'm not sure the decor they're doing for (seems a bit sparse to work it out) but that isn't a big deal as the rest of the visit is genuinely decent. Thanks Floyd's team. See you again soon!
Me & my family enjoy eating here. Weve been here a few times. Nice family style meals. We tend to eat eggs benedict or the bushmens meal (savory mince on toast with a egg on top). Casual atmosphere. Great service. Right in the heart of Island Bay shops, very close to public transport & carparking.
This is one of our local cafés in Island Bay and my review is an assemblage of multiple visits. Service can be patchy at busy times but is invariably friendly and accurate. Cabinet food is tasty though changes could be made on a rotational basis. Slightly better value-for-money than its principle Island Bay Village competition down the street, and is popular with families. Another very solid performer without being truly memorable, the milkshakes are generous and delicious.
Floyd's is good. Good cabinet food range, they make a nice brew and the food menu is reasonably priced. I've tried the savoury mince on toast and it was great value and tasty, I've tried a lot of the cabinet food which was all pleasant, and the shakes are tasty as. Good for families and kids, quite spacious. Service is good.
Had a great late lunch at Floyds today. It was rather busy when we arrive but we were warmly greeted and promptly show a seat. Although busy the servers quickly arranged a high chair for our 1yo and sorted menus out. They quickly advised of a 20 min wait but they food was well worth it. My French toast with bacon was fantastic, the bread wasn't soggy or overdone at all. My partners pancakes were on par as well. The kids menu was nice and simple and cheap. The thickshakes were actually thick and full of flavour.
Overall we were very happy with the service and the food, would happily go along again.
Nice place. Foods are very good. Really high recomended
I enjoy every single time been here.
Stopped by for a sneaky coffee on my way to walk the dog. What better than fresh air, sun and a good strong hot coffee...actually it was the middle of a thunderstorm... I had to wait for a break in the rain to dash in to get the coffee and the dog didnt want to go. Entering Floyds it seemed that space was abundant but to the point of feeling sparce... counter staff were friendly and efficient, coffee had a few grounds in the bottom but it was actually a nice strong cup of coffee.... smoooooth too. Will return for another go.
Really cute cafe. Great staff, friendly and make great coffee. Great bake case. Nice open kitchen pumping out stellar food! Free wifi, we posted up working for a few hours a couple mornings and didn't get to many bad looks. People don't care for people posting up to long in cafes with Internet. But this cafe had no where to charge our computer so that's one way to keep people from staying allday! Thanks!!
A vaguely Kiwi goes fishing themed cafe - pale olive walls, orange plastic lampshades, pastel yellow, green and blue plastic chairs and pale wooden tables. All together, rather sparse and disconnected.
Two cabinets of ok food. Very pleasant, helpful service. Kid friendly.
My interest was the tea. They have t-leaf tea, but the only black tea was the English breakfast. I wasn't asked about milk. It came, loose leaf, in a small round tea pot. A cold cappuccino cup and a small jug of milk.
Colour when poured was good, full bodied, pleasant astringency. Hot sipping temperature but cooling quickly in the cold cup. Other than that it was a good cup of tea. My tea score for floyd's was 16/30 - ok but well behind the best. Suggest use a warm cup, ask about milk and what type, increase the choice of black teas.
This is almost a daily stop for me. Coffee is always good and I'm almost always swayed by the food on offer. The owners are friendly and are really helpful when you can't decide what you want.
Had a lovely experience here recently. Turned up with our dogs for a quick windy outside coffee. Was tying them up when a staff member came out and mentioned they have a courtyard out back where we could take the dogs. They led us to a secret garden with a table up some rickety
steps surrounded by greenery. Ended up having a lovely relaxed brunch. Great friendly service, good coffee and yum food.
great homemade food and lovely coffee. love that everything in the cabinet is made on site and that bacon etc is from across the road from IB Butchery
OH those are the Chocolate Frog guys! I wondered where I recognised them from!
I've been here several times since I realised it had ceased being "Super" (which was pretty bad). It's my new cafe of choice because:
1. It's truly child friendly -- the kids' menu is extensive and not limited to deep-fried stuff, unlike in many places... in fact I'm not sure if there was anything deep-fried in the place. My kids love the cinnamon toast especially. And adults are allowed to order from the kids menu, which is great (not that I ever have, due to the yummy adult menu);
2. The staff are really friendly and helpful and tolerant of all sorts of menu change requests and of wacky small child behaviour;
3. The food is good and reasonably priced;
4. They do gourmet milkshakes (yet to try, but they look awesome);
5. Nice light and airy decor;
6. They have k-bars!
I'm sure there's other stuff too ...
If pressed for any constructive criticism I can only come up with that a couple of the mains I saw others get seemed a little small for the price (but this is not the case for most of the mains), and that it would be nice if they could replace some of the McDonald's toys in the toybox with something a bit less rubbish, and it would be extra good if they made washing the toys part of the daily routine. I get a bit reluctant to let the kids use the toys in many toyboxes as it seems they're never washed. Bringing in the Chocolate Frog idea of making sipper cups available and having kids' books would also be cool.
Quick visit while waiting for an appointment in the area on a Saturday afternoon. Had the chicken, mushroom & rice filo pastry for $5. Very tasty, filling, and served with a nice chutney. Fantastic friendly service too. Will be back, hope to give them 5 stars when I order something more substantial!
Now I know why the chocolate frog isn't so great any more because these guys have left and taken their great food to Floyd's! Yum food and a good variety for kids and adults. Don't miss the kid's pit - there is enough room for them in here. Great service too.
Amazing Food Great Sevice and the best Corn Fritters in town!
Great food, coffee and staff!! This is a wonderful transformation of a tired and run-down cafe.
...and thank goodness the kid pit has gone. After 3 years of kids spills, "mishaps" and less than average cleaning, it certainly wasn't somewhere you'd want your kids to play...
Return visit / review. I've been back loads of times over the past couple of years and still think they have the best coffee in town. Love the changing menu that has some real thought that goes into it, as well as all the usuals / old favourites you'd expect.
Very family / kid friendly without being a pre-school toy strewn mess.
Warm friendly service, delicious food and fair prices! I got potato cake benedict (PPH) perfectly poached eggs, hollandaise and flavorful sausages.
My only note would be cleaning outdoor tables for those of us who love to sit out. Will definitely be back!
Yummy food, decent portions and reasonably priced. Nice relaxed atmosphere, spacious cafe dont feel like you're bumping into others tables walking passed with a pram , good service.
Amazing service from the lady who loves the vanilla risotto! It was delicious as was the double down w bacon!! Good coffee and yum chai latte. And super chill vibe with the music nice and quiet so you could actually converse and not overly busy. Thank you
I have been here for three times now. Always the food & coffee are consistently delicious. I would recommend to improve the front sitting area atmosphere a bit more artistic.
Great food and service, and we were able to book a table for 6 in advance, which was great as many other places won't take bookings for brunch/lunch.
Great quality, well priced coffee and served with a friendly smile and some humour.
My go to coffee if I’m on the parade, love my regular oat mocha 😂, foods pretty good as well sausage rolls are great here!! Would 100% recommend if ur in the area
The best Big Breakfast in Wellington. New owners took over 2.5 years ago. Food is lovely but the big breakfast at $20 is so good. I have been compelled to right this review because it’s so nice. Keep up the great work and thank you.
Great cafe. Always come here when I want a coffee and am nearby.
Nice coffee and my wife loves the Montreal as a brunch.
Great coffee brew and always arrives hot. In the time of Covid this cafe is a place I have seen doing their utmost to keep patrons safe. They check vax passes - including those who sit down while others in the part order. They do a great job cleaning tables and surfaces. They crew are friendly and there is a really good range of brunch options as well as counter food.
Great tasting food and large plate size. Highly recommend. Will return next time we are in Wellington.
Great service and food, as well as coffee. Accessible by public transport, family friendly, even has a chalkboard to write on. Book early if you want to secure a large table, as I only saw 2 of them and if you're with a group of say 10 people, then you'll be smart to book ahead.
EFTPOS available (pay wave - or tap and go is available as a option when paying).
Absolutely beautiful breakfast good value for money and generous portions will definitely be back next time in wellington

A very popular cafe in Island Bay. I like stopping in there, to grab some coffee and a light breakfast, whenever I walk my grandson to school. It is something we look forward to! Nice friendly staff and good coffee!
Great hospitality. Food was generous and delicious. Highly recommend. Not a flash place, but aren’t non-flashly places the best places??
Traditional food, cakes etc some at least baked on site. Like mum at her best . . Try the custard squares, if any left, scones are fresh 10.00 - 11.00.
Service is personal if your a repeat customer, chairs & tables on street, local papers inside. Coffee's, cold drinks and all the usual. Can grab and run but best enjoyd on spot.
A local treasure. .
