Such an interesting cafe just for taiyaki and matcha drink! Was a bit hard to find this place since it’s up at the end of long stairs. Taiyaki with red bean stuffing was tasty but slightly pricey. Didn’t really like matcha but since I was in the cafe so I ordered a matcha drink. It was bitter but the red bean filling neutralised the bitterness of matcha
Try these wee fishes! Light n crispy with a great filling! I had the passionfruit cheesecake one today. It was my first time trying, and it was really nice. Sorry no pics, I ate it too quickly! Yummmm!
This is a piece of Japan right on our front door stop (well ... Wellington's at least), as far as I know, this is the only place that even makes fresh Taiyakis, and also makes one of the most authentic Matcha I've had in New Zealand.
It's well hidden though, you have to go all the way up the Plimmer steps to get there but once you do it kind of feels like you stepped into the backstreets of Kyoto itself.
The matcha they use here is actually from Uji, Kyoto, very legit, and the Taiyaki also uses Adzuki (red beans) sourced from Japan as well, and they are so delicious.
Doesn't matter if you've had a Taiyaki before or you just want to try, it's worth going. The shop is very small, actually not unlike the actual shops in Japan, and it can be a very calming experience to go inside, get a Taiyaki, and drink some fresh Matcha.

We got two fish sweet one for chocolate and one for red read and the red bean mochi soup in takeaway. I haven't try to fish but I dig in the red bean and try to scope the mochi for one bit. It sticky and perfectly hot that melt in my mouth. I tried this desert before from many Japanese restaurants but your mochi is perfect. it worth for climbing to your shop from Lambton Quay. This red bean mochi desert is simple but u make as perfect as it is.
I accidentally stumbled upon this place when passing through and I feel in love! This cosy little place does amazing taiyaki and authentic matcha. Their staff are so friendly and welcoming too. Highly recommend! :)
My sister took me here for a quick and light snack before dinner and it did not disappoint! Not only was the owner (I assume) was super friendly and welcoming. The taikyaki were very nice and loved how it was all made fresh! Unlike the ones at the night markets. The chocolate and red bean one was so good. The peanut one was average. Not my fave for sure.
The only “bad” part was the matcha milk. It tasted more like warm milk with a dash of matcha powder on top than a latte.
But I mean, this place is a must if you’re looking for a nice and quick snack! I think it’s perfect for the winter time too!
