The nearby trendy coffeehouse had lines out both doors so I wandered in to Hokitika and had one of the best sandwiches in years. This food rivals anything you'll get on the other West Coast (San Francisco / Seattle).
The king fish sandwich was extraordinary - get one. Super fresh tasting flaky white fish with cream cheese, medium sized salty capers, mild red onion and butter lettuce. The 'half' size is quite satisfying. The texture, coverage, ingredient quality and ratio are all on point, and the bread - a crispy Ciabatta type loaf baked fresh daily - is superb. I liked it so much I bought a half loaf to take out the door.
The cafe space itself is bright, naturally lit, clean and airy with good sight lines and comfortable seats. Music was 'classic hits', but at an appropriate background volume. Chilled water is in the corner cooler and a collection of eclectic drink ware and spoons are available for your coffee. The coffee, incidentally, is the equal of the best Christchurch has to offer. But don't take my word for it.
Service was friendly and helpful despite it being snarlingly early. I can see why Hokitika Sandwich is expanding and encourage anyone with an interest in well crafted food to pop in. Personally, I can't wait to return.
Great sandwich and good to have half sizes available - large would have been too big for me. Enjoyed the festive sandwich - lovely fresh ingredients
First time visit and with an extremely appetising looking menu I couldn’t decide on what to get. Was recommended by the friendly chap at the counter to get the Coaster. Now this had to be one of the tastiest sandwiches I’ve had in a while and it’s presentation looked like a sandwich you might find somewhere in Europe.
The bread was soft but sturdy holding all the filling in. As for the filling there was a generous portion of prosciutto, cheddar, greens and a fried egg (with a slightly soft yolk) - a perfect breakfast sandwich that was extremely satisfying
For the portions, they make to a half or a full. I went with the full and unfortunately my eyes were bigger than my stomach as I really had to pack the second half away - something to keep in mind when ordering as these are some pretty hefty sandwiches
All in all had a great experience and now have another reason to revisit Christchurch
