My wife and I stayed in a Motel nearby and the owner of the Motel recommended this restaurant. We visited just as the restaurant was opening for dinner so they were not quite ready. But no problem - Elley, our waitress for the evening, made us welcome. She helped us choose a table then explained the day's specials. She quickly brought the glasses of wine that we requested and menus.
We asked Elley to repeat the specials again and discussed options and preferences. Elley's attention and patience was exemplary though the restaurant was quickly filling.
My wife chose the Pasta of the day. Tagliatelle with strips of beef in caramelised sauce. It was novel (we have never encountered this dish before) and absolutely delicious.
I had the Fish of the day. Oven baked Groper dressed with Scallops in a tasty sauce. It was served on a bed of wilted Pak Choy on top of oven cooked potato wedges. This dish too was absolutely delicious. I don't normally eat chips or potatoes but these were so good I simply had too.
Overall I would summarise by saying that this meal was the best that we have eaten in very long time and the best since we came to New Zealand. Service was excellent and at $89 for a meal that included 5 glasses of wine this was good value. Nothing could be faulted and we would definitely return.
Thank you for excellent service and fabulous food. We arrived at 9pm on a Sunday evening, having travelled up from the glaciers, and were welcomed as if we had booked a week before.
Our waitress (Ms Skeats?) was friendly and very helpful with menu choices as well as interesting local information. Our chef, Ronnie I think, came to check that we had enjoyed our meals and genuinely was interested in the answer! He took the time to chat about the west coast, even though we were the last customers on a wet west-coast night. Clearly a happy staff and a dedicated chef.
We ate the flatbread entree - yum - and had the whitebait pattie, the pork with kumara and ginger, and the roast of the day, all generous and beautifully cooked and presented.
Unfortunately, no room for dessert after the generous servings. Perhaps we'll start with dessert next time.
Had an amazing meal with 3 friends all our meals were first class, service also excellent the girls very friendly and pleasant. Atmosphere warm and friendly. Well worth coming from Christchurch just for the dinner..................we will be back again. We felt we could have been at any top restaurant anywhere in the world, congratulations to the chef and staff.
