For our Saturday lunch, me and pops ventured out to Lower Hutt for some errands and visited Gr8 Tandoori. They are an Indian 🇮🇳 restaurant serving a variety of starters, biriyanis, and vegetarian + non-vegetarian curries.
Paneer Pakora 🧀 $12
Firstly, we got good portions for what you paid for. Decent presentation and were glad that the Pakoras were not oily/greasy. Unfortunately, we felt that the dish did not have enough seasoning. Even with the coconut chutney + spinach leaves, I wished there was a bit more salt🧂or spice 🌶 added to the filling. Also, I would like the Pakora batter to be less dry and give more crunch when biting into it.
Kakori Kebab 🍢🐑 $16
Overall, both of us liked the dish. The portion size was just right and was not a heavy dish that we could enjoy before our main. The minced lamb was soft and cooked well. Again, it would be good to get a bit more seasoning in the lamb so that we can really taste the "ginger garlic and spices".
Chicken Saagwala + Kastoori 🐓🥘 $13
This is definitely the highlight of our meal. Firstly, a great serving of chicken breast was in each of the curries. We were glad to reduce the chilli/spicy level. That way, it makes it easy to taste the other unique flavours in each curry🍛 such as the spinach/cream (Saagwala) and then the Methi/onion/gravy (Kastoori).
We also liked the garlic naan a lot. Had the right amount of thickness, was cooked just right without being raw/overburnt and you can really taste the garlic in each bite.
Final Words
Overall, we had a good experience at Gr8 Tandoori and would recommend to anyone wanting to try out a new Indian restaurant. Despite some letdowns in the starters, the service was friendly to talk to and were hospitable to our needs.
Personally, to get the best experience, I would skip the starters and go straight into the mains. Maybe get a couple of mates for a takeaway or dine-in and mix it up with the naans or curries.
The service was on point and the food stunning, even though it lacked spice. We had mango lassis, butter chicken, mango chicken, a lamb dish, kabuli & garlic cheese naans, rice, and mango chutney. I think next time we will have the curries as medium heat. I'd like to go back and try things I don't usually have. When I feel like Indian food, this will be my go to place.
