I've always been a fan of Uncle Man's cheap and good Malaysian hawker fare but I can't say that I have been a big fan of the K-Road premises and I could never quite get to the Queen street store so I was thrilled to see that they recently opened a 3rd branch at Kepa Road's new Eatery (a food court style restaurant) at Eastridge Mall (near enough to the folks who live in the Eastern Bays - St Heliers, Glendowie, Kohimarama, Mission Bay and Orakei).
Made a special trip to have my fill of Roti Canai and chicken curry and Kway Teow Goreng before lockdown.
What I liked:
1. They have a much cleaner and nicer environment and ambience being part of a larger foodcourt set up known collectively as Eatery at Eastridge
2. The K Road store looked tired, old - this little corner seemed like a small refreshed version - love it. Good seating, cutlery on the table tops, little takeaway menus.
3. On the topic of takeaways, the staff were friendly and chatty and offered us a little menu flyer to keep and take with us so that if we were ever too busy and wanted to order out to just give them a call and come pick it up.
4. Small Plates like Karipap (Malaysian-style Curry Puff), Tahu Sumbat (stuffed deep fried tofu), Chicken Satay and Salt and Pepper Squid, Roti (all manner of paratha, canai and murtabak), Rice (from Nasi Lemak to Briyani), Noodles (from What Tan Hot to See goreng) and a good selection of basic Desserts like Banana Fritters, Roti Tissue served with condensed milk, Kueh Dadar and Sago with coconut cream and palm sugar and Roti Bom - make this a great place when you have that craving for a simple but effective selection of Malaysian street food that a Singaporean like myself would crave from the local Sarabat stall.
5. Love their Teh Halia (Ginger Tea) - flavourful, not too sweet, thick and creamy enough and hand-pulled with all the bubbles and froth resting on the top layer of the cup - just the way, I fondly remember it.
Most certainly coming back for my next comfort food fix.
Been here couple of times and their food quality and service is good. I would say best nasi dishes and well made roti chanai i ever had . Keep it up!
I've eaten a lot of noodles in my time and the mee goreng is one of the best I've eaten in Auckland. Absolutely fantastic. The char kway tow, murtabak and nasi lemak were also superb! Worthy of a trek to visit.
